Movers & Shakers

We Were Going To Win Anyways

“Dad!” Kat shouted running down the stairs. She had a letter in her hand and a big smile on her face. When she reached the bottom she looked to see Sirius at the door.

He didn’t look like the Sirius Kat was used to. His eyes were sunken and he looked kind of scared. There was a little bit of tension in the room that Kat didn’t really understand. She thought Sirius looked like he was being some sort of a bother, but he always came to stay in the summer. Mr. Potter placed his hand on Sirius’ shoulder in a comforting way, than went to grab Sirius’ bags.

“You brought more stuff this time.” Kat stated.

“Kathrin, Sirius is going to be moving in. The guest room is going to be his room from now on.” Mr. Potter replied. “Now what did you want me for?”

“Rengine sent me a letter asking if I could go to a Quidditch game with his family. Bready’s bringing Sydney; she’s only seen the games at Hogwarts.”

“I’ll talk it over with you mum. Could you go get James for me?”

Kat nodded and zoomed up the stairs. She knocked on James’ door but opened a second later. He was at his desk writing a letter. Kathrin couldn’t help but think it was to Lily. Last year Lily was with Severus and he called her a mudblood. Ever since then Lily started to warm up to James. Now the two write each other every week. Kat was getting annoyed with James’ Lily talk before but now that they talk it’s gotten much worse.

“You know, opening it right away defeats the purpose of knocking right?” James stated, annoyed by his little sister.

“Cool. Dad wants you to go help him move Sirius into the guest room.”

“Oh Sirius is finally here…- wait what!” James ran out of his room dragging Kathrin along with him. Once he got to the top of the steps shouted “SIRIUS IS MOVING IN! SWEET!”

Mr. Potter stopped at the top of the steps, right in front of James. He was sure his son had just deafened him. He looked down to see his little girl being dragged along the ground. He sighed and said “James put down your sister…”

“Oh” James said looking down.

“Owe” Kathrin said hitting the ground with a thump.

It didn’t take too long to move Sirius in, not that he had much stuff. During dinner Sirius smiled and joked with everyone. Even so each one of the Potter’s could tell there was stress behind his laughter. It didn’t help that Mrs. Potter kept asking him about how he told his family, along with other things. After the first couple questions Mr. Potter changed the topic to ask if Sirius was going to try out for Quidditch and that James was captain this year.

Kathrin enjoyed Quidditch a lot. Not that she ever played it with her brother. Over the summer she enjoyed going over to the Walker’s and playing in their homemade field in their backyard. It’s not that she didn’t want to play with her brother, but he tended to gloat for days whenever he won something. If James won something, everyone in the town and the next knew about it.

It was also bothering her that James had managed to get Captain. She was thinking of trying out for one of the other two chaser positions up for grabs. Kathrin was still pondering about trying out; maybe Rengine would be some help.

After dinner James dragged Sirius upstairs, no doubt to tell him about the things Lily was talking to him about, so Kathrin was alone with her parents.

“Your father tells me you want to go to a Quidditch games with the Walker’s.” Mrs. Potter said looking at her only daughter.

“Yeah, Sydney’s going too.”

“So in other words there’s going to be two girls with a bunch of boys.” Mrs. Potter replied.

“Ren and Bready’s parents are going to be there! Also I’m bunking with Sydney in Ren’s room and he’s sleeping in Thomas’. Thomas is still in Scotland so he’s not going. I’ll be back at noon! I promise!”
Mr. and Mrs. Potter looked at the pleading Kathrin; then at each other. They both had the same look on their face and sighed. Mr. Potter finally said “be back at noon the next day.”

“Yes!” Kathrin shouted as she hurried up the stairs to write Rengine.

Mrs. Walker always enjoyed having Sydney and Kathrin over. It was nice to have girls in a house filled with boys. The boy’s liked it too because Mrs. Walker always made all sorts of snack for everyone. This time when Kathrin arrived there were cheese and crackers waiting for her right in front of the fireplace in Rengine’s hands.

“Take one please.” Rengine begged. “I’ve been standing here for ten minutes because my mom wanted me to offer you one when you got here.”

“Oh calm down Ren, it hasn’t been… the more important thing is Kathrin’s here!” Mrs. Walker changed the subject after looking at the wall clock.

“Yay Kat’s here!” Bready said from the kitchen.

For the next few hours Ren, Kat and Bready played Quidditch in the backyard. Sydney watched from the back steps taking breaks from reading to look up to see who was winning. Bready liked playing keeper. For someone who was under confident and shy, he was a really good keeper. It was obvious he had also practiced over the summer from the way he was playing.

After lunch they headed off to the game. They used the floo network, there were a few fire places set up for Quidditch games, then walked the small distance. The whole Walker family loved Quidditch, but nobody was as loud as Mrs. Walker. Sometimes Mr. Walker had to try to calm her down, but Mrs. Walker would always replay “because your team is losing!”

Kathrin was really excited because her favorite team was playing, the Holy Harpies. Rengine kept whispering to Kat that the Puddlemore United was going to win; he was quite so his mum wouldn’t hear him. Mrs. Walker and Kat managed to get Sydney to cheer for the Harpies, to Bready’s disappointment. Even he wouldn’t try to change Sydney’s mind in front of his mother with her Quidditch face on.

Kathrin was enthusiastic the whole game and hours after. The Harpies won 280 to 90, one of their best games in the season so far. Mr. Walker had to convince Mrs. Walker it was time to go home, she was ready to go party with you witch’s and wizard’s. When they got to the Walker’s house Mrs. Walker made dinner, even though it was pretty late in the evening. They all talked about the game. Mrs. Walker calmed down a whole lot, which was good because Sydney was a little scared of Mrs. Walker’s Quidditch face. Sydney admitted later that she cheered for the Harpies out of fear, but was happy she did in the end. Kathrin couldn’t help but laugh.

Kathrin came home at noon just like she said she would. James asked about the game as he and Sirius sat at the kitchen table snacking. Sirius seemed to brighten up a bit. He looked much better than when he first arrived. Although he still seemed a bit down. James looked at him and the stood up as if he thought of the best thing in the world.

“Kat you should get the Walker boys over and I get some people and we’ll have a game!”

“I have to play?” Kat asked.

“Of course” James replied. Kat couldn’t argue with that face.

She wrote the boys with the family owl and James asked people with his own. Within 20 minutes they had two full teams. On Kathrin’s team there were the Walker twins, Farley who happened to have plans with Bready that day, Clare Davis, Melanie, and Owen Henning who was Bready’s friend and Hufflepuff seeker. James was able to claim Peter, Renee a Gryffindor beater, Sirius, Sarah Davis the Gryffindor seeker and Clare’s sister, and by a miracle convinced Lily to come play.

“Don’t worry, Kat we’ll go easy on you.” Sirius said nudging Kat in the shoulder.

“It’s okay; we were going to win anyways.” She nudged back.

The game was actually quite comical. Whenever Clare or Farley, Kat’s beaters, got close to Lily, she would randomly throw the ball in a different direction. Clare was pretty funny herself trying to hit the bludger with the bat, she hit it twice. Remus and Bready, the keepers, were pretty even. Bready had more practice but Remus wasn’t too bad either.

Kathrin was happy she broke her rule to play with everyone. She couldn’t remember the last time she had a fun full game of Quidditch with just friends. It was actually a close game but James’ team won 220 to 200 when Sarah caught the snitch. Mr. Potter laughed James said they won and said “Yeah, but your little sister got more points than you. You need some practice Captain.”

“Kat you should try out this year!” Renee shouted from across the field. “It’ll be fun!”

“Maybe” she shouted back.

It was only a couple weeks left till school started. Kathrin felt like it was going to be a fun year.
