It's Been a While

Stranger

“Don’t be a stranger.”

Her words ring in Daniel’s mind, although his gaze does not leave the road.

It was the same four words that she said to him the summer after they graduated high school together. It was also his last summer living in his parent’s house, before upgrading to an apartment three hours away – in Sarnia – with some of his teammates on the Sting.

Driving from King City to Sarnia on a regular basis seemed pointless, since school was no longer an obligation.

“You’ve only got so many years in you,” Leila shrugged her shoulders, “and if you don’t start now, you may never get drafted.”

The few reservations Daniel had about leaving King City behind diminished as the words left Leila’s pouty lips.

Her gaze left the old truck’s bed, with a few duffle bags and suitcases filled with things, and returned to Daniel – she never met his eyes, though. “Just… try to keep in touch, ya know?”

“I will,” he nodded without missing a beat.

“Don’t be a stranger.”
