Our Secret Place

She leans with her back to the wall, and he cradles into her, her head on his shoulder and his on hers.

He is freezing, his legs so cold and skin so tight that moving hurts. She doesn’t feel anything, her skin also frozen.

The moon shines through casting it silver rays against their bodies. He gazes upon her pale skin, but is forced to look away again, tears threatening to fall.

He can’t bear to look at the bruises which mark her, their purple and yellow glow heightened in the pale light. The way they glimmer against her skin makes him feel sick. He backs away turning towards the wall opposite. He doesn’t make it and falls to the floor, his shoulders heaving, heavy sobs and uncontrollable shaking.

He hears her slump to the floor behind him, but doesn’t turn to look at her. He can’t. He buries his head in his hands tears flowing freely now.

“Why…” he whispers to himself, “why…”
