Turning Tables

The End

“What are you doing here?” I whispered, standing right in front of him. I was freezing, even with the bathrobe on.

“I missed you,” he answered sheepishly, shrugging a little. He had both hands in his pockets, and he looked as adorable as ever. It was hard to be mad, but I tried.

I scoffed. “You didn’t seem to miss me the other night.”

He frowned, looking pained. “She had a key. I had no idea she was gonna be there. I swear, Luce.”

He looked so sincere, so earnest, that I couldn’t do anything but believe him. And I truly, truly did. “You swear?” I smiled a little, despite my best effort to be angry.

He nodded, grinning a little. “Cross my heart.” He took a step forward, and I couldn’t help but mirror his grin.

I sobered up quickly, however. “Tyler, maybe… maybe we’re not good for each other?” It hurt me to ask it, but I had to. Being with him felt great, but we’d started on dishonest terms and our path hadn’t exactly been scotch free. I took a step back. Being close to him was clouding up my judgment. I needed distance; even a little bit would help clear my head. “Maybe we should quit while we’re ahead?”

He laughed bitterly. “Luce, we’re past all that. At least, I am. I hate you sometimes. I can’t stand you most times. You’re stubborn, annoying, and you drive me crazy. But I can’t imagine… I can’t not be with you.”

I gasped in surprised. “You think I’m annoying?” I asked with indignation.

He laughed, this time out of incredulity. “Of all the things I just said, you being annoying is the one that stuck?”

“No, seriously. Annoying? Really?” I frowned. No one wants to be annoying!

“You’re impossible…”

“So are you!” I retorted.

“Which is why we’re perfect together!” He answered excitedly.

Shaking my head, I narrowed my eyes at him. “That makes no sense.”

“Which is why it makes perfect sense.”

I had to laugh at that one. “You’re crazy.”

“Only because I want to be with someone as polar as you.” He took another step forward, and this time, I stayed where I was.

“What are you doing?” I asked quietly.

He shrugged again. “Nothing.” He stepped closer, and the gap between us all but disappeared. “Just cold.”

“Stop,” I warned. “It’s not gonna be that easy.”

“I’m not doing anything.” He leaned down, planting a soft kiss on the tip of my nose.

“Tyler…” I breathed. But it was no use. His lips moved down to my neck, and I cocked my head sideways, giving him access.

“It’s cold, we should go inside,” his words were muffled against my skin, and it sent shivers down my back.

“To talk about this more, that’s it.”

“Right. To talk.”

…..

I woke up, tangled in the sheets on top of Lucy’s bed. She was curled up against me, her hair in my face. I breathed deeply, taking in her scent.

It was five in the morning, and my phone was vibrating incessantly. She wriggled, turning to face me, and snuggled closer.

“You have to leave,” she mumbled into my neck.

“No, I don’t.”

“Yes you do, or both my parents will have heart attacks. And then come back to life and murder you.”

I wrapped my arms tightly around her. “I have to go,” I declared.

She grinned. “Yeah…”

“Bur first, promise me one thing.”

“Hmm?”

“When we get back, I’m cooking you dinner, since the last time didn’t work out too well.”

“Okay.”

“And one more thing,” I hugged her tighter, but leaned back so I could look her directly in the eyes. She blinked sleepily up at me. She looked beautiful and radiant, even in the dim light coming from the window.

“What?”

“I love you.”

“What?” She blinked some more, as if unsure of what she was seeing, much less hearing.

“I love you.”

She grinned, her eyes crinkling at the corners. The she wrapped her arms around my neck and put her lips to mine.
