"Ross?" she whispered, holding the white stick in her hands. She was late and he made her take a test to see. Her mind wandered back to the little white pills she hid in her purse, but she took it anyway, despite what she was sure it was going to say.

"What does it say?" he asked. He sounded so weak, lately. She didn't notice it but she felt the tears pool in her eyes as she watched him deteriorate right in front of her eyes.

"I'm not pregnant."

A muscle in his jaw twitched and he stared at the wood table for a long time. He stood up, kept his eyes on the floor, and he slammed their bedroom door shut.

She sat outside the room all day until he opened the door, late at night, and let her inside. He didn't say a word to her. He just lied there, unmoving. She was almost afraid to turn over or pull the covers over her shivering body.

"I'm sorry," she whispered, sincerely.
