“Sylvie” is short for Pennsylvania. Her parents moved over from Macedonia before they had her, and they felt so grateful to be in America that they named her after the state they moved to.

They gave what they thought was a beautiful name, but as she grew up she learnt not to tell people it in full. She said she hated it, but really, she hated being Sylvie Koska more.
Long after Douglas was gone, she knew that her parents would be there. In spirit, if nothing else, so she always slept safely, protected by her name.
