All's Fair In Love snd War

One.

“Help fight the war today! Enlist at any military center, humans and Lycans are both needed in the fight against Vampires! We will not let them control the country anymore!”
The military announcement rang out through the streets again. A few men and women had stopped and had their ears directed towards the speakers, obviously drinking in the words and considering enlisting. I merely shook my head, muttering how murdering one another wouldn’t solve a thing.

I didn’t want a Lycan or a Vampire to control the entire country from winning a war; I would’ve preferred to elect someone like they had done ages ago. But once the first inhuman president was elected, Lycans claimed they cheated, and Vampires claimed Lycans were cheaters as well. There were rumors that there was more to the war that broke out, but no one knew for sure.

What was known was that the country was split into two sides. Lycan or Vampire territory. Each had their own King and laws, and each side had humans that supported each side, or just didn’t care; like me basically. I liked nether race so to say. The idea of both rulers scared me, alive forever, or a wolf by night for hundreds of years. Something about that idea sent a shiver down my spine.

The Princes were due to take over power soon. But for their protection no one knew what the Prince of each side looked like. They were allowed a normal life until they assumed power. It could’ve been anyone on the street, the snotty teenage boy showing off, the more ‘nerdy’ boy studying war tactics in the library. Everyone speculated on who it could be, but there was never any solid proof. Once they took over, it was their turn playing the war game.

I turned down one of the side alleys, shaking my mind from the war as I opened the back door that led into my work. I was a waitress in a small restaurant, located below a bar. People would stop in and eat before they went up to drink, or once they threw up their brains they’d be down here to fill up their stomachs. I couldn’t be picky about jobs, there weren’t that many steady paying jobs besides being in the war effort.

“Well, doesn’t someone look foxy tonight Amelia?”

I laughed at Alec; he was the new manager and owner of the small space. He had helped me out more than once, and I definitely wanted to repay him sometime soon. But money was tight around this side of the country, and whenever I offered him something he quickly shut me down and told me all would be fine.

“Last thing I have clean, I’ve got to scrape up my change later on to go do laundry.” I explained, dropping my bag behind the counter.

For a few seconds I saw an unknown emotion flash through his eyes, but he quickly smiled and continued to wipe down the counter. “I have a feeling we’ll be busy tonight, the club upstairs was passing out flyers for half off drinks. I’ve got Macy and Trent up here at our bar, and you plus Courtney managing the tables. Do you think you’ll be alright with just her for backup?” He asked, glancing up at me for a few moments.

“I’m pretty sure, how bad could it be?”

“Trent! Can you please go wipe up the floor by table six? Some drunken asshole just threw his shot on the ground and started cracking up while throwing more.” I begged as I hurried up to the bar counter. It wasn’t as busy as the tables, especially with the club upstairs having their own half of stunt.

He gave me a sympathetic smile, “Alright, can you do me a favor though and go find Alec? We’re out of vodka and I need his permission to order more. I think he’s up in his office, I’ll watch your tables for you.”

I gave him a grateful smile as I nodded and hurried out the backdoor. Alec’s office was located in a small apartment next door to the club upstairs. The only way to access it was with the stairs that led to it out in the alley. He had it for business meetings and didn’t use it as a personal one. There were one or more occasions that one of us would use it to crash in after a late shift at work.

Craning my head back I could see light from behind the office curtains. With the price of electricity being so high I knew he was up there, no one kept lights on unless they needed to be on.

As I started up the steps I couldn’t help but notice focuses speaking angrily towards one another. Since Alec had been here for the past five months I had never heard him raise his voice, even towards an unruly customer. My eyebrows knit together in a frown as I climbed up the steps quietly, feeling a tad guilty for spying on him. But this wasn’t like him, and I was almost… concerned.

As I reached the landing I could hear what almost sounded like low growling, something a dog would do when angry. My eyebrows knit together as I approached the door, gripping the knob gently. I tried to be quiet as I turned it slowly, putting a bit of pressure on the door gently to open it. The light streamed towards me, and the scene in front of me made my stomach twist into a painful knot.

The fur. The fangs. The claws.

My breathing seemed to have stopped in horror as I started at the beast in Alec’s office; but what shocked me more was his smaller body growing straight back at the beast, fangs and all. My mind was whirling as I stepped back, the metal grates under my boots groaning from the sudden pressure.

The beast’s head snapped towards the door, a deafening growl escaping from its mouth. I let out a shrill scream, unable to contain it as it started to step forward. I was frozen in terror, my brain screaming at me to run yet my legs staying in the same spot. It wasn’t until the beast had reached the door, when Alec was screaming at me to run, that my legs got the message.

I felt as if I had jumped down the stairs, my ankles hurting from the few skipped steps. I ran as fast as I could, trying to put as much distance between myself, and it as humanly possible. Lycans weren’t allowed here, each side was ordered to stay in their territory except for on battle grounds.

My mind was buzzing with thoughts as I ran faster and faster. Was Alec doing business with them? Was he somehow a spy for this side?

I glanced over my shoulder once, finding the alleyway behind me void of any sizes of humans or super natural. Slowly but surely my steps lessened from frantic sprints to normal paced. I bent over, coughing slightly as I allowed my lungs to fill with air normally. I wasn’t sure whether to head back towards work, or whether to find my way home from here and wait until tomorrow.

However, my mind was taken off working when two distinct fur covered paws suddenly invaded my eyesight. My stomach twisted painfully as I slowly looked up from my lashes, a whimper passing as I stared straight into the beast’s eyes. Up close it felt as if I was standing in front of a breathing brick wall. How this body turned into a human one somehow was beyond me.

The dark hazel eyes felt like they were burning me as it stepped closer; prompting me to take a step back. The process repeated until I felt my back hit the alley wall, tears springing into my eyes from pure fear. I never thought I’d be killed like this, I thought I’d die like this. But then again in our times you couldn’t tell how you’d end up in the dirt.

I couldn’t help but sob softly as its mouth lowered towards me; lips curling back to expose long teeth. My fingers were gripping the bricks behind me tightly, any tighter and I could’ve cut my skin open on them. My legs felt like they were ready to give out as its mouth lowered near my neck, the hot breath causing my hairs to stand on end.

I didn’t want to die like this.
