The Man Who Couldn't Die

THIRTY-FOUR;

The words that Holland said to him that day when he stood beneath her window, begging for her to take him back, were words that he never forgot because they changed his life. They gave his life meaning when he thought there wasn't any possible way for it to be meaningful. He spent his entire existence reveling over his near-death experiences and how he was thrust into a war, unable to to die for his country even when everyone around him did.

"Rhett, maybe the reason why you haven't died yet–that God and the universe didn't let you die all those time that you could have–was because you have a purpose in your life. Maybe you're supposed to change the world somehow and make it a better place. Or maybe you're supposed to teach people what it is to be a good man, because that's what you are, Rhett. You're a good man and I think it's safe to believe that everything happens for a reason."

And those words stuck with him forever.
