Two Bears
I woke up the next morning on a mission. I was going outside rather he wanted me to or not. Darren had told me he didn't want me to because there was a chance I was pregnant, and honestly there still was but I couldn't stand to be stuck in this bedroom any longer. My wolf needed out, I need to run and breath again. Honestly it was getting so boring to be in this bedroom and I couldn't handle it.
I left when I knew that no one else would be wondering the streets. It had to be around 4:30 in the morning. The streets were still dark and misting with blowing snow. The street lamps cast a white glow on patches of glistening snow. A winter wonderland for a town, and the best park was that there was no one awake to stop me. My mate lay restless in his-our- bed, and everyone under his control did the same. It was reckless to travel without him but I just couldn't seem to be stay cooped up any longer.
My thick winter boots crunched on the snow, leaving deep prints that marked my path. They were sure to be there for days, if Darren really wanted to find me there would be no reason he couldn't. My heart pounded in my chest, this wasn't something I should be doing but I just couldn't help myself. I needed this like I couldn't imagine. A sharp gust of wind through my winter jacket open against my torso and I quickly drew it back together, allowing a shiver to ripple through me. The brown hair atop my head danced wildly in the wind. This was crazy.
When I reached the wooden gate of the short fence on the outskirts of the town I began shedding my clothes. First the jacket, then my nightshirt and the pair of grey sweatpants I had borrowed from Darren, next my boots and undergarments. Shivering and naked I placed them in a storage bin placed specifically for clothing. Whenever you left the town in your wolf form this was where you stored your clothing. It was a way to tell who was out of the town and a way to keep your clothing dry and semi warm for your return.
My wolf knew what was happening now and she quaked deep inside me. Begging to come out, longing to feel the ground between her claws once more. Oh the excitement that courses through our veins, I was ready for this. Before I allowed her to take over I glanced back at the towering mansion that was mine, a light was on. The light to Darren's bedroom, it illuminated the window and cast a ray of light onto the town behind me. In that window stood my mate. Arms crossed lips pursed. He hadn't seen me yet, I could tell by the rapid movement of his head as he searched his city for me. My icy fingers reached up and touched the necklace he had presented me hours before, was I betraying him? I would come back, I knew that but what was this really costing me?
It was a split second decision. My wolf rippled out of me and landed against the snow. The ripping of my flesh snapped through every alley way and I had to stop her from tilting her head back and yowling at the moon. Our eyes looked back once more at the window, he was gone. I knew then that he had seen me and was on his way to scold me which meant that I had no more then five minutes to allow her to enjoy herself.
My claws dug into the ice and I took off. Darting into the woods and dodging trees and rocks. Excitement flared inside of me and I loved it. How long I had waited to feel the wind on my snout and how long I had waited for it to glide through my hair. Freedom, that's what this was. I was free again, even if it only lasted the mile and a half before Darren caught up to me. He didn't stop me though, surprisingly. All he did was run behind me, keeping a watchful distance. His presence was overwhelming, it was all his wolf. That huge brown furred wolf that followed me was alpha. Even if he was my mate my wolf knew to obey him.
Eventually I ran out of strength to keep running. I was to out of shape and to wore out to run as far as I planned. I had wanted to reach the boundary again, where Darren and I had met but I nearly made it a quarter of the way. These past few months of being cooped up had taken their tole. I slowed to a stop against the banks of a far off river, panting and frustrated that I knew I couldn't go any more. My wolf growled inside, angry that I couldn't give her more. Darren reached me in a about thirty seconds after that, nudging my shoulder blade with his giant nose. He towered over my small frame, which made it clear to anyone that he was alpha.
I changed my form, curling into the snow at his feet. His hot breath spilled over me, making it seem like I was just a child. His skin screeched as he changed back as well, sitting beside me in the snow and listening to the wind gust through the trees. Both of our body's were generating enough heat to melt the snow we were sitting on. In a few minutes we would be cold again but for now we were good. His warm had came over to stroke my bare back, gently scratching it and being all loving and such.
"Don't sneak out." He insisted, moving closer to me and curling around me. Probably trying to share his heat. "I know it's hard to stay in that room all the time, but just ask me. I'll make time for this, a wolf shouldn't be caged."
His warm lips pressed to the top of my head. Together we just laid there, listening to the river flow slowly under the ice and the owls sing. Eventually I got tired, and cold. Half through yawns and shivers I shifted back into my wolf form. He followed of course, yet we never moved. I just stared off into the distance and he just watched me. I think he was mostly worried I was loosing it, but I wasn't. I just didn't want to go back, I wanted all night out here.
I curled into the snow once more, allowing his to tuck me into the crevice of his stomach. It was warm there, and it smelled like home. I found myself growing sleepy because of it. Maybe it was because I had stayed awake awaiting for him to sleep earlier. I yawned loudly and cuddled as close as I could get, and quiet quickly I fell asleep.
A loud roar awoke me. I jumped up, teeth barred and hair standing up on edge. Darren had no longer been curled protectively around me, he was standing just as I was but he was at least 20 feet away. In front of him stood a giant grizzly bear, two cubs protected behind her thick legs. She was standing up on two legs, being threatened by Darren. It was obvious to me that we were in her feeding ground and she was protecting her territory. Yet to Darren all he seen was a meal ticket. She could feed the entire town for weeks on end, and he wanted her. She billowed out another roar, her cubs crying behind her.
Despite my wolf's better instincts I changed into my human form, screaming to Darren. Terrified that he would get hurt or he would hurt her. I don't know what made me want to stop him, but I couldn't see him kill her and leave these two cubs.
" Darren! Stop she has babies!" I cried desperately. He turned to me, wide eyed in shock. He knew what I wanted and understood...or so I had thought.
Another roar sounded, this one louder and more threatening. It was directly behind me. I whipped around quickly. The father grizzly was here now, and he stood at least 9 feet tall only a few steps from me. I backed up quickly, preparing to change into my wolf form and flee. I wasn't fast enough, his huge black paw flew down at me, smacking me a crossed my torso and sending me flying to the ground. My skin burned and my eyes rushed down to see why, I was clawed completely across my side, and blood was beginning to seep, stained the white snow red.
Darren was overtop of me in a split second, although it felt like a life time. He crouched over me protectively, barring his teeth and lowly growling. The cries of the cubs were shrill and beginning to hurt my ears but luckily it had caught the fathers attention. He retreated to his family, pushing them along under Darren's watchful gaze.
After they had disappeared into the tall pine trees Darren flashed into his human form. Already all over me. His hands prying mine from the blood my cuts and terror over his face.
"I'm fine!" I insisted trying to get him off from me, but I wouldn't budge. I honestly thought I was fine, the burning had dulled and it was just a lot of blood now.
He snarled at me. "You are not! What were you thinking!?" He just about shoved his nose into the cuts to get a better look at them.
Tears began to weld in my eyes. What was I thinking? Why did I come out here last night and put us in that type of danger? Why didn't I look for another bear? Was I just worried about Darren?
"Okay," he sighed with relief beginning to sit up."it's just a scratch not-..." He looked at the tears beginning to stream down my bright red face and sadness washed over his. I jerked him into a hug and began sobbing terribly hard.
"I-I'm sorry!" I wailed shrilled into his shoulder. "I shouldn't have come out here!" His strong arms tightened around me, tucking his face against the top of my head and breathed deeply. I could tell how much the bear incident had frightened him as well.
"It's okay, shhh." He soothed, allowing me to sob for what seemed like a eternity. The blood that had gushed down my side grew sticky and thick, and my body began to grow cold. I shivered closer to him and never let go. His warm skin on my arms felt wonderful, and it was so comforting. I couldn't believe I allowed this to happen, I am to ignorant to be out here alone. This wasn't my old territory , I need to get to know it before I'm out here alone. "Darling, we need to get back."
I sniffled back some tears. "I know." He rubbed my back soothingly, and in the back ground -far away- a bear's growl echoed through the trees.
