Memento Mori

III

*sixty years later*

“Katie, it’s time for me to be with you now.” I croaked, my wrinkled hand running over the tombstone like it had every week since I was twenty-eight. “My sweet sweet Katie, it might not be a surprise anymore, but if I can find you in heaven I’ll be damned if I can’t surprise you somehow. Haydenne is well. Her first grandchild just graduated college. She’s well.” I wheezed coughing, and fell over onto my side closing my eyes.

“I’m coming Katie, I’m finally coming home to you.”

… “Surprise.”
