Honey

Max met Millie when he was fifteen. She was so quiet he thought she was mute at first. Pilgrim Coffee was a warm and welcoming place, the fire lit in winter, the feeling of home echoing off the walls. It was Max’s escape, where he went to hide and drink some strong coffee. That’s where he met her. She was there on her own, flipping through the pages of a book, sipping on hot chocolate. She hadn’t yet come to like the taste of coffee. He saw her there a few times, always on her own, always with a hot chocolate and always with a book. He stood behind her one day as she ordered.

“The usual?” the man said behind the counter.

She nodded. A hot chocolate, two marshmallows with a pinch of cinnamon. Another day he noticed she was reading The Book Thief, it was on his list of books to read, and unfortunately it had never been returned to his library. He just asked her if he could borrow her book when she was done. Millie was so nervous, but that’s how they met. That’s how they became friends. That’s how they fell in love.
