What Lies Within

First Day

When Sophie woke on the morning of September 2nd, she couldn't keep the smile off of her face. The first day of classes always excited her. It was the start of the school year and it was always interesting. Her and Pansy got ready in a fairly quick fashion, they were girls so of course it took some time but they still made it down to breakfast in plenty of time. They settled into their seats beside Draco. Grabbe, Goyle and Blaise sat across from them.

"How is your schedule looking?" Pansy asked after Professor Snape made up their schedules for them.

"Not too bad, I guess. Muggle Studies, double Potions, Divination, double Defense Against the Dark Arts, and History of Magic." Sophie responded, folding up her schedule and stuffing it in her bag that sat beside her.

"I can't believe you are still taking Divination, it's such a stupid class." Pansy responded as she reached for her juice, taking a large gulp of it. Sophie shrugged her shoulders and grabbed for a piece of toast, quickly buttering it up.

"I feel it's a little fascinating. It does need a proper teacher, that's for sure but i get along well enough." Sophie told her, making Pansy still shake her head.

"Why do you take it, Draco?" She asked, turning to the blonde who had apparently zoned out as he jumped slightly when Pansy nudged him.

"Oh. Divination?" He asked, Pansy nodded. "Easy. It's the easiest class to sleep in, plus the homework is the easiest to bullshit." Pansy giggled and even Sophie had to admit that she chuckled a little. He had a point. "A class that I can't believe anyone takes, especially a Slytherin, is muggle studies." He shot at Sophie who rolled her eyes. He did this every year.

"You know as well as I do, Malfoy, that I do not like muggles. I simply take it because we do associate ourselves with muggles at some point. I feel we should know at least a little about them. I would never date one though. Don't fret that pretty little head of yours. I plan on marrying a pureblood." Sophie easily responded, focusing on finishing off her toast. "We should head out if we want to make it to class on time." Pansy agreed so the girls got up, bid farewell to the boys and headed off in the direction of their first classes, having to say good bye at the door of Muggle Studies as Pansy had Ancient Ruins, a class that Sophie found boring and useless. It was ancient for a reason.

Muggle Studies passed by quickly enough, they had to take notes on electronic objects used in a household. Apparently they use something called 'the internet' to connect with their friends. They can send instant messages to people on 'websites' rather than writing letters and using owls. It seemed too impersonal for Sophie's taste. Soon she found herself descending the stairs and into the familiar dungeons, taking her place in line with the other Slytherin's. She waved at a few Gryffindor's who smiled at her but she finally spotted her best friends.

She made her way over to them, finding that Ron and Hermione were arguing with one another.

"What happened?" Sophie asked Harry as the two bickered. It sounded like it was about Quidditch, which Sophie knew Hermione didn't like much. Sophie herself was a very large fan of it and knew how to play very well. The times she spent at the Weasley's home, the Burrow, her and Harry would team up with Ron and go against Fred, George and Ginny in a game. It was always very fun.

"Cho came to talk to me and Ron kind of... stepped in." Harry said, shrugging. Sophie couldn't help but smile, Ron always had the way of obliviously ruining a perfect moment for people. Before anyone could say anything else, Snape opened the dungeon door, allowing the class to enter.

"Sophie! Come sit with us!" Sophie turned to see Pansy waving at her from across the room. Sophie turned to the trio who just shrugged.

"Go on, your people beckon." Harry said, punching her shoulder softly to show he was joking. She laughed and rolled her eyes before making her way to the table where Pansy, Draco, Grabbe and Goyle sat.

"Settle down," Snape's cold voice droned as he shut the door behind him. Sophie couldn't help but smile, there was no need to say that. It's not like anyone was talking anyway. They all sat quietly at their tables, waiting for instruction from Snape. "Before we begin today's lesson I think it appropriate to remind you that next June you will be sitting an important examination, during which you will prove how much you have learned about the composition and use of magical potions. Moronic though some of this class undoubtedly are, I expect you to scrape an 'Acceptable' in your O.W.L., or suffer my... displeasure." Everyone couldn't help but notice how his gaze lingered on Neville Longbottom who looked terrified. "I take only the very best into my N.E.W.T. Potions class, which means that some of us will certainly be saying good-bye." Now his eyes rested on Harry who glared straight back at him.

"Today we will be mixing a potion that often comes up on O.W.L.s, the Draught of Peace, a potion to calm anxiety and soothe agitation. Ingredients and method are on the blackboard. You will find everything you need in the store cupboard. You have an hour and a half.... Start." The class began to hustle around, lighting fires under their cauldron and finding the correct ingredients. It was simple enough for Sophie, as well as Draco, both of which always had been good at potions, which made them favorites of Snape, not only because he was the head of their house.

"Potter, what is this supposed to be?" Sophie looked up from her cauldron to gaze through the smoke that was looming around the classroom to see Snape leaning over Harry's cauldron, sneering at it.

"The Draught of Peace." Harry spoke, his teeth clenched together tightly. Sophie's eyebrows creased together, she always hated it when Snape picked on Harry. Harry really didn't deserve it. Sophie looked next to her at Draco who was grinning at the sight.

"Tell me, Potter, can you read?" At Snape's words, Draco laughed loudly, along with Pansy, but Sophie simply glared at Draco who smirked back at her. After a Snape pointed out to Harry what he had forgotten in the instructions, Snape cleared up all of Harry's potions before announcing to the class to flask up their potions and put it on his desk for grading. After doing so, and helping Goyle extinguish his robes, which had caught fire when his potion exploded his flagon, Sophie gathered her bag and rushed over to Harry.

"That was awful!" She said as they left the classroom.

"That was really unfair. Goyle's potion was much worse." Hermione spoke angrily as they stomped up the marble staircase and into the Great Hall for lunch. Harry ended up storming off after Hermione and Ron started to bicker.

"I'm going to go sit with the Slytherin's." Sophie told them, starting to get annoyed with their bickering as well. With that she turned and made her way to sit beside Pansy. "Where's Draco and the others?" She asked, seeing that they were not present.

"They weren't hungry, they said." Pansy responded, shrugging as she took a bite of her chicken.

"Why? You miss me, sweetheart?" She heard a voice say behind her. She turned to come face to face with Draco Malfoy smirking at her.

"No, I was just wondering if you and Blaise were off snogging each other. You two seem to be very keen of one another." The smirk immediately left Draco's face before he slipped it back on and sat beside Sophie. He scooted closer to her and put his arm around her waist.

"You know you are the only one I want. Even if you are a filthy little blood traitor." He sneered at her. She glared at him and shoved him away.

"You sicken me." She said, standing up and grabbing her bag. "Don't you dare ever touch me again, you vile little pathetic ferret." She sneered in his face, showing everyone just why she was a Slytherin before she stomped away, making her way to Divination early. She found Harry sitting under the trapdoor alone.

"Hey, why aren't you at lunch?" He asked as she sat down beside him, still angry.

"Draco is a prat." She mumbled, running a hand through her hair.

"Yes, he is. I've been telling you that since first year, Soph." Harry said, making her smile.

"I called him a ferret, amongst other cruel things." She told him, which earned a very large grin from him as he remembered the year previous when he and Draco had gotten into an argument and Professor Moody transformed Draco into a white ferret and then made him fly around at his will, even going down Grabbe's pants. It was a wondrous site to see.

"That's why I love you, Sophie. You can always cheer me up." Harry told her, slipping an arm around her shoulders. She grinned, resting her head on his comfortable shoulder.

"Who would have ever thought, a Slytherin and a Gryffindor, best friends." She said, making him chuckle. She smiled and snuggled closer to him. She was never more comfortable than when she was with Harry.

"You are more a Gryffindor than a Slytherin, even with your blood status and your parents. Trust me, if you acted like the other Slytherin's I wouldn't talk to you. You are a mix of them. You are a.... Slyndor." He spoke, making her burst into laughter.

"Harry Potter, you are such a dork."
