The Gambler

The kids are coming home I'll set the table You can make the fire.

It was Christmas morning and Darianne was already bustling around ready for when the kids came back home, Andrew was already here sat sipping egg nog and watching the TV, I was sat on the floor playing with the dogs, I reached up on to the coffee table and sneaked a handful on crisps to them, both of them devouring them quickly. I stroked them fondly when a voice from behind me yelled

“Fucking dogs! Nate that’s why they scrounge don’t give them our food!”

“Ugh fine, they just look so sad”

She rolled her eyes and carried on peeling the vegetables and prepping the trifle; I adjusted my Santa hat and stood up to cuddle Darianne when there was a knock on the door Darianne shrieked

“They’re here and I’m not ready yet! Don’t let them in”

I stood and stared at her a smirk on my face

“Don’t look at me like it Ruess I swear to god”

I laughed and opened the door and on our porch stood Jack Jess and Baby Eila although she wasn’t exactly a baby any more she was now four and looking more and more like jack as time went on
She jumped at me

“Grandpa!”

I squeezed her adoringly taking in her soft scent she was such a beautiful child. I put her down and she ran in straight towards Darianne throwing her arms around her jess hugged me

“Hi dad”

I welcomed them both and offered them drinks before we knew it the fire was lit the smell of roast turkey filled the air and the sound of talking and laughter filled the air. Darianne and Andrew began to set the table. We al took our seats and I looked around at my family, my beautiful wife, my gorgeous children, my heavenly grandchild and my in-laws and it was like time was frozen as I looked around from the head of the table and smiled silently thanking god because it was in that one moment I knew I was the luckiest man on the planet and life really couldn’t be any better.
