Prologue: Dinner

“I want to become a police officer.” I announce at Sunday dinner, between my two 'Dads'.

“Lilly pad, I know this has been your dream since you were three, but why now?” Says Dad – Harvey, he is a guest at Dan’s house, when mum and Dan met, Dan promised that dad could come for Sunday tea when I had a big event, I had just returned from my second year of Harvard Law. My Dad was a Cop, a detective; he always wanted me to follow his footsteps and was crushed when I chose to become a Lawyer like Dan.

“Lillian, what would your mother think? You have 2 semesters of Harvard left, you could be a lawyer.” Says Dad- Dan, technically he’s my stepdad but I’ve called him Dad since my mum died two years ago, a week after my 20th birthday.
I was now twenty two and I had changed my mind, training to be a Lawyer felt dirty and mean it was all money based.
I enjoyed the debating, not the job.

“Quiet, I have a place at the academy already, because of my extensive knowledge I have been allowed to fast track. In six months I’ll be a rookie at the 71st precinct Brooklyn – Crown Heights.” I smiled as my dad rubbed my hand.

“Excuse me.” Dan wiped his mouth and left the table. I hear him take Fudge out for his evening walk.
I look after him in near tears, why can’t he accept that I can’t be his dream daughter I don’t want to be a DA (district attorney), he already has James – as if he knew I was talking about him Dan’s nephew James walks in the room and smiles at me as my dad empties the table.

James is also the ADA (assistant district attorney), I smile sweetly, I always try to leave before he arrives, it’s been awkward since after we had a small torrid affair last year if you can call a few steamy sessions an affair it started when we first met, I didn’t know they were related, I immediately broke it off when it came to light.

I then hear Fudge back from his walk with Dan, I see Dan walk in followed by Fudge - my chocolate coloured Labrador and I rub Fudges head while looking at Dan.
Dan gives me a brief nod and walks out followed by James, who smirks probably remembering the time we did it doggy style, sometimes I find him slightly slimy. (It seems possible for a person to become slimier if they are practicing law; Dan must try so hard not to be a sleaze.)

Dad comes back from his third trip clearing the table and says “Are you ready Kid.” I know he’s just asking about going back to Brooklyn but I feel like he’s also saying it in a reassuring way of double checking being a cop is what I want.

I nod and we leave.
