Nighttime Apparition

From the private diaries of Lord Edmund Vile

In emptiness, as I steadied,
My thoughts to join the void,
And readied for the anchor's lunge, I saw,
A brilliant asteroid!
You blinded my horizons,
That no other light I'd see,
A spectre called by midnight's rite,
You came to visit me.

You were the ghost,
Of all I knew, my nighttime apparition.
You were the host,
And yet a guest- the bravest bipartition.
A phantom dear, you stalked my bed,
And brought me all my old regret,
In slivers shaved from death ahead,
From place where space is deader yet!

My vision from another world,
In furtive raiment you were pale,
Like mist upon the moor, unfurled,
You knocked my breath into your sail.
You are a vessel transient,
A ship of dreams and shape of grace,
You gave me to a moonbeam chase,
And schemed the while for my embrace.

If ink were blood, and blood could run,
We'd hurry from our history's page,
And live as pirates, all for one,
A war on peace to wage!
Yet as things stand, your fate lies drawn,
For dawn is coming soon.
I'll mourn you as your pirate's soul,
Drifts forlorn on the galleon moon.

Young Edgar,
Who is scarecrow prince and bandit of my heart,
Lo! that your pillage of my dreams must die before it starts!
Into nothingness you plunge,
As I was doomed to slide,
And from wide everything, I'll shed,
A single tear to glide,
Where cloudlets sketch your absent waves,
And longing hands grow weak,
I'll gift the moon the touch you gave,
And scrape her pearly cheek.
