Death and Rebirth

The Fourth Chapter

Carlos sat in the Humvee taking a moment to think, he looked down at Pan as her head rested in his lap. He brushed back her hair. “I’m sorry Kiddo I was slipping” He muttered. He looked up and out of the window, at Claire, K-mart, Mikey, and Alice as they worked to bury the dead in the sand before heading out to Umbrella’s underground facility. He knew the plan what he must do.

Pan stirred slightly, her eyes darting under her lids. Carlos brushed her hair back “what’s going on in there” He muttered.
Pan found herself locked within herself. She wandered the pathways of her mind. “Everything we touch dies” Echoed in her head. “It doesn’t have to be that way” Alice’s voice echoed “I’m learning that, we fight for what have left” She added. Pan stopped in the middle of a white hallway, dressed in her white night gown. “I want to go back to the labs before everything happened” her voice bounced off the walls of her mind. “He needs you to wake up” Alice reasoned, “You can’t go back to the labs they are no good for you” she went on. Pan plopped down on the ground. “But it was easier, nobody got hurt” Pan whined, Alice’s voice became angry “But nobody got saved either” she boomed. Pan cowered “I’m sorry” Alice’s voice sighed “you can’t stay shut down, we need you pan, I need you” Alice left with those words.

“Is she awake” Claire called timidly leaning into the Humvee window, Carlos sighed and looked up at her “No, I’m kind of hoping she’ll wake up before…” his voice trailed off and he went back to focusing on Pan, he smiled as he saw, her eyes were open again, and the virus symbol was gone. “Pan” he breathed, Claire slid away from the Humvee. Pan’s eyes welled up again “Alice says, that they have the antidote in the underground facility” she spoke softly trying not to look him in the eyes. Carlos chuckled “she couldn’t get me to go along with it so she got you to give it a try” he laughed “that’s not playing fair” He said shaking his head “Alice doesn’t play fair, she plays to win” Pan stated simply, Carlos nodded. “It's too late anyway, and she knows it… I know it.
