October

Mutual Friends

"I can't believe you." She said in a whisper, the mask of calm indifference on her face crumbling away. "Eighteen years, I waited for you. We waited for you. I wrote letters to you, just in case I ever saw you again. Larry and I made you October's godfather- every time she was clever, I wrote to tell you. Every time she did something you would've been proud of, I wrote to tell you. Now that you're here, I don't want you to read them, because what's the point? She's seventeen now."

I sighed. "Sally, I never promised to come back."

October looked confused. "Mum. You never told me he was my godfather. You said I didn't have one, but that Martha was my godmother."

I was shocked, and it must have shown on my face, because Sally laughed bitterly. "Oh, yes, Doctor. Martha and I have become quite good friends over the years, exchanging stories of our great adventures. She's October's godmother."
