It's Only a Dance Step

Sunday was a day to relax. At least it was for me.

I closed my eyes as I laid in bed and listened to my music. I had the dorm to myself for the whole day because Candice and Henry were on a date. Turning to my side I looked at a dance poster I had on my wall.

Date.

Why was the concept so foreign to me? Candice had taken me out numerous times in hopes of getting me to say to someone asking me out. But I always declined. Not because the guys weren't attractive, which they were,but because I didn't feel a connection.

A connection I only felt with Damon.

I quickly shook my head and changed the song on my ipod. No. I wouldn't think of Damon that way. We were dance partner and that would be it. But I couldn't help but hope...

My phone buzzed on my nightstand and I looked the caller ID. Speaking of Damon...

"Hello?" I answered, taking my headphones off.

“Hey. Were you asleep?”

“What? No, no. Just lying around. Is something wrong?” I asked him.

“No. I was wondering if you were busy.”

I frowned wondering what he meant. “Like…dancing busy or?”

“Just busy in general.”

“No. I’m not busy.” I replied and lay on my back, staring up at the ceiling.

“Great! Then I’ll pick you up in a few.” I could hear the smile on his lips but before I could ask him what he was talking about, the line went dead.

I bit my lip and couldn’t help but laugh out nervously. Quickly getting up, I changed into a plain t-shirt and jeans. I inspected myself in the mirror and worried all of a sudden. Where was Damon taking me? Was I dressed appropriately? Should I wear makeup?

I shook my head while I looked at myself. Listen to me? I was turning into a girl who only cared about her looks. I narrowed my eyes and grabbed my bag. Screw my looks. I wouldn’t be one of those girls who craved for a guy’s attention. I would be me.

And a plain t-shirt and jeans, is me.

I walked out of our dorm building and waited. Quietly, I looked around at the girls walking, talking, or whispering to their friends as they walked by. I took a deep breath and ignored them. You’d think that with time, they would get sick of picking on one of the better dancers in their class, but…nope. They continued to point me out and think of me as a teacher’s pet.

Hearing a car pull up, I looked up and saw Damon throw me one of his million dollar smiles before gesturing for me to get in. I made myself comfortable in the passenger seat and put my seat belt on.

“So…where exactly are you taking me Damon?” I asked, hoping to get something out of him.

But only silenced followed. Silence and a playful smirk on his lips.

I shot Damon a confused look when he pulled up to a dance studio for little kids and got out. I followed behind him and touched his arm.

“Why are we here?”

“You’ll find out soon enough.” He chuckled and shook his head, opening the door for me. I sighed and stepped in.

Little girls and boys were in tights and tutus. Some were on the floor stretching, while others were talking, or putting their shoes on. Each and every one of them had a smile across their face and was jumping up and down with a huge amount of energy. I couldn’t even remember when dance had been this fun that I had the energy these kids did.

“Come on.” Damon said beside me and walked to the back. A lady with black long hair and beautiful dark eyes stood looking through CD’s. Why did she look so familiar, I wondered.

The lady looked up when she heard footsteps approaching and smiled wide. I looked at Damon only to see him with the same expression on his face.

“Damon! Oh come here!” She laughed, her face lightening up when Damon went into her arms. They embraced tightly and a smile rose to my face. A minute later, they pulled apart and looked at looked at me. “And who may this be?” She asked Damon with a smile.

“Sarah, this is Desera. Desera, this is my aunt Sarah.” Damon introduced us.

“Hello.” I said politely and extended my hand.

“Hello? What is this? A formal party?” She laughed and shook her head. “Give me a hug!” But apparently, I didn’t have a choice. Her arms were around me the next second and gave me a tight hug. I chuckled nervously and hugged back gently.

“I didn’t know you’d be in town Damon.” Sarah said as she pulled away and looked at him.

“I’ve been in town for a while. But, as you know, I hardly get any time off.”

“Do I ever!” She laughed and looked at me. “It’s good to see that he’s making time for a girlfriend though! She’s a beauty Damon!” She smiled at me.

Girlfriend?

I knew I was blushing red as I pretended to clear my throat and looked down.

Damon gave a small laugh and shook his head. “Sarah, she’s not my girlfriend.”

“Yet…” Sarah replied with a smirk and wiggled her eye brows.

“Sarah!” Damon started. I looked closely and noted that his cheeks were turning red. Those cute and charming cheeks.

Sarah laughed and slapped his chest. “Okay, enough embarrassing my nephew. Why don’t you two help me get class started?” She told us and clapped her hands getting all the kids attention. She showed the kids a mini routine and then turned to us. “Alright, so you two go around and help the kids that need it or give them tips.”

I must have had a surprised look on my face because she let out a small laugh when she looked at me. “You have a dancer’s body. So I didn’t have to really ask if you knew these steps or not dear.” Her smile never left her face as she continued to help the kids around.

A smiled and a blushed appeared on my face again when I glanced up at Damon and caught him staring. He smiled and went to the other side to help a little girl who seemed more nervous to have him near then if she were doing the steps correctly. I laughed a bit and then found a girl who looked like she was struggling.

“Here, try to keep your legs apart more when you’re doing the turn…perfect, just like that.” I straightened her back and smiled. As soon as she made the turn and landed correctly she jumped up and down.

“Thank you SO much!” She cheered and did the turn a million times more. I laughed, proud of myself and made my way to other little dancers who needed assistance.

“Think we’ve found one of your hidden talents.” Damon’s voice crept up behind me and made me jump. I was so focused on helping a little girl with her steps that I didn’t hear him coming.

“And what is that?” I asked quietly, looking up at him.

“Teaching.” He stated and stared at my light eyes.

“Desera and Damon, come here and show the class what hard work and patients can accomplish!” Sarah said in front of the class.

I opened my mouth to argue but Damon’s hand slipped into mine and pulled me to the front of the room. Sarah pushed play and the music started. I stood there frozen and nervous. Why? I had absolutely no clue.

“Hey…look at me.” Damon said and took my chin to face him. His black eyes moved from side to side reading my face and smiled. “Just dance. They will be the last people to realize if you made a mistake.” He turned me around to face the mirror and stood behind me with his arms around my waist. “Relax…and dance with me.”

With that, I relaxed my body against his and let him lead me through the song. We moved as one. We knew each other’s next move. We knew when the other needed help. And we felt what the other was feeling. I let out a small gasp when he crushed my body against his after a turn and held me close. His head bent down and rested against my forehead as we both caught our breath.

Sarah cheered and clapped. The children followed and the room was filled with cheer’s and hundreds of clapping sounds. Damon looked into my eyes just like I did into his and smiled wide.

We had something special, and I now knew that he felt it too.
