A Promise Binds Me to Her

II

So poisonous was the reign of Ravenna, that nature turned on itself and people turned on each other. The land died, and with it, hope. All that time, she kept Snow White and Alexandria imprisoned high up in the north tower.

Alexandria awoke to her sister creating a fire in her cell,
“Good morning Snow,” she yawned stretching her sore back,
“Good morning Alexandria,” she said quietly. In the years that the girls had been held captive Snow White had held her grace, where her sister lost every bit of sense to her.

Alexandria grew vengeful and held a very large and frightening grudge against Ravenna. Each day she would utter unholy words about the woman who had stolen their throne, Snow White always prayed to god; saying that it was not her sister’s fault, she was simply mourning the loss of their parents and the losses that the kingdom faced.

Once the fire was going Snow white took hold of the wicker man and woman she had made when she was still young,
"Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on Earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us...” Snow was interrupted by a loud and obnoxious scoff emanating from her sisters cell, “Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen” she continued, ignoring her sister,
“You still pray?” Alexandria scoffs, “I wish I had your faith sister,” she mutters walking over to the doorway to the cell,
“You still have faith sister; it is just buried under your grief,” Snow explains to her sister. Yet another mocking scoff comes from the cell opposite to her,
“I lost my faith; the day I broke my promise,” Alexandria mutters sitting back down on her small bed.

Snow was confused, but she brushed it off. Her sister had said worse during their time apart. Snow felt it was as if her sister was driven part crazy with loneliness, that the only thing that kept her what little sanity she had left was the thought of her sister and the promise she had made when they were both young.

After a few silent minutes between the girls a sobbing girl was brought in, both Snow White and Alexandria rose from where they were and walked over to the door sharing a worried look,
“Hello?” Snow asked quietly, there was no reply,
“Hello?” Alexandria asked louder a bit more demanding than her sister, a small girl no older than the age of sixteen appeared at the doorway,
“What is your name?” asks Snow peering through the bars in her door,
“I am Greta...” the girl whimpers, her cheeks sodden and red from crying,
“What happened to you?” asks Alexandria, trying to see into the neighbouring cell,
“All the girls in our village were taken" Greta explained, "I was trying to reach Duke Hammond’s castle when I was caught," she whimpers, the memories still fresh on her innocent mind, this caught both girls’ attention
“Duke Hammond, is he alive? Does he still fight in our father’s name?” Alexandria asked hurriedly clinging to the bars in her cell door,
“You are the King’s daughters?” Greta gasps, most likely with shock and surprise, “The night of the king’s death we were told all in the castle were slain,” she continued. This shocked and surprised Snow but did nothing to throw what little hope had ignited in Alexandria,
“We are the only two survivors, Ravenna keeps us for future use,” Alexandria mutters darkly, this made Greta flinch slightly; she had never expected something so dark and sinister from a princess,
“And William is the Duke’s son still alive?” Snow asks,
“I do not know princess,” Greta apologised quietly. This sent Alexandria off into a muttering rant,
“You must ignore my sisters foul language, we have been kept hidden away up here for many a year,” Snow White sighs looking over to her sister who was storming around her cell,
“Princess’...what will they do to me?” Greta whimpers, this brings Alexandria back to the cell door. She had tear stains on her cheeks,
“We do not know,” Alexandria sighs, her voice thick from holding in tears.

Not long after their conversation, Greta was taken away. Both girls stood and watched, Alexandria blamed herself; she had the skills to take down a man twice her size yet she stayed hidden behind a wooden door. The sun had lowered considerably, in the dull grey sky, when Greta was returned. Alexandria stood from her kneeling position and walked over to the stone wall,
“Greta?” she asked quietly, there was no reply, “Greta,” she demanded more than asked hoping that she had fallen asleep, desperately hoping that Ravenna had not killed her like so many other woman who had passed through here. She walks over to the door and shrugs to Snow who just sighs and turns round a hand lingering on the rusty iron bars.

Alexandria stood ridged and unmoving, the only thing snapping her from her angered trance,
“Snow White, what are you doing?” she asked quietly, and then the soft sound of a bird chirping told her. The chirping was familiar; she heard it from her small crack of a window; that looked out onto the ferocious waves below. Alexandria turned and saw a white and black bird, like the one her sister had saved many years ago. So entranced in the bird feathery beauty; Alexandria began to walk forward lifting a soft hand.
The bird hopped away; with furrowed brows Alexandria climbed up, using a stone that stuck out under the window as a step, peering out of the window.

There the bird was sitting on some form of metal wire; Alexandria smiled devilishly and yanked it out from the stony wall. Retreating back into her room she fashioned it into something that resembled the key. It took her awhile and the use of several small a stones to fashion it to the perfect shape. If it were not for Alexandria’s sheer determination she would not have had the strength to bend the strong thing piece of metal. Just as she was finishing she heard footsteps, she looked up and saw Snow’s fear filled face. In her sister’s hands was a nail, thick and harmful. Alexandria gave her sister a knowing smile and a small nod returning to sit on her bed.

Snow ran to hers and hid the nail under her pillow, hand tightly wrapped around it. The footsteps stopped outside of her and her sisters doors and a small chuckle came from whoever was standing there,
“Good morning Alex,” Finn, the Queens brother, taunted Snow’s sister,
“You are an ignorant fool Finn...did you know of that?” she spits back; Snow could hear her sisters patented smirk in her voice. Finn allowed a snarl to escape his lips,
“And you are useless, I don't know why my sister keeps you here,” he retorts turning from her. This shuts Alexandria’s mouth and baffles Snow White. The sound of keys unlocking a door rings through the tower and Finn enters Snow white’s cell. Snow turned ridged in her bed and stopped pretending to sleep. Peering over her shoulder she caught Finn’s scary stare,
“Did I wake you?” he asks, Snow gives a feeble shake of a head to tell him “no” he stepped closer and sat on the edge of her bed, “Are you always awake when I watch you?” he asks again. Snow didn’t reply just a soft and tiresome sigh escapes her throat. Snow watched as his hand made its way up her thigh and under the corset of her dress,
“ You've never come in before,” she whimpers looking back up at his unsightly face,
“My sister would never allow it,” he soothes. Alexandria, being able to hear the conversation from her room, allowed a small smirk to form on her face. This man, always doing as his sister told him, he was weak and spineless, she could snap him like a twig if given the chance; but he was also cruel in the ways he taunted her and her sister, “She wants you all to herself,” he continues to move his hand up Snow White stomach,
“I am afraid of her,” Snow whimpered, a truth to her words,
“And not of me?” Finn asked genuine surprise in voice, Snow shook her head again, “fear not princess,” he murmured reaching a hand to stroke her hair, “You will never again be locked in this cell,” he smirks tracing around her face.

Alexandria jolts up and moves to the door, a disgusted and angered look upon her face. She knew what he meant; she didn't know if Snow understood, she probably did, but she knew fine well he meant death.
“What does she want from me?” Snow whimpers as Finn traces his fingers across her collar bone. A devilish and sinister smirk crosses Finns face and his hand moves to between her breasts, pushing down lightly,
“Your, beating heart,” he cackles. Snow White swipes the nail across his face, causing him to fall to the floor, and Alexandria immediately got to work picking the lock on her cell door.
Snow was out before Alexandria; and had locked her cell door behind her so, using the proper key, she freed her sister. The door swung open and Alexandria launched herself on Snow,
“He didn’t hurt you, did he?” she seethed peering over her sister’s shoulder and smirking at the man crying for his freedom. Snow White shook her head and pushed away heading for Greta’s cell door.
Snow was too busy on the lock to see what Alexandria saw, resting a hand upon her sister’s shoulder Alexandria pulled her away slightly,
“Snow...” she hummed, Snow looked up and gasped seeing the once youthful and beautiful Greta was now an old and frail woman,
“Go...” she urges silently, “Go!” she calls louder when Snow does not budge. With that reinforcement Snow was off and Alexandria not far behind. Alexandria let out a laugh as she could hear the shouts from Finn,
“Get me out of here, free me!” he called. She couldn’t help her laugh turning from normal to a sinister cackle.
