Love's Spiral

After Spencer left Derek, she made her way over to the lacrosse field where she told Boyd to meet her. She took deep breaths on the way, preparing herself for the confrontation she would be having with her best friend.

Boyd was already standing in the middle of the field, looking for her.

Spencer jogged the rest of the way.

“Scott’s coming.” Boyd told her, jerking his head in the direction the other boy was coming from.

“I know.” Spencer replied, looking in Scott’s direction briefly and then back to Boyd. She placed a hand on his lower arm. “Play it cool, okay?”

Boyd nodded, agreeing just as Scott walked forward.

“I wanna talk to Derek.” Scott ordered.

Spencer took a deep breath and turned around to face Scott. “Why don’t you talk to us, Scotty?”

“I don’t want to fight.”

“Good,” Boyd commented. “‘Cause I’m twice the size of you.”

“True.” Scott nodded. “Really, really true.”

Boyd smiled, smugly.

“Alright, no one wants to fight. So let’s keep this civil, yeah?” Spencer asked, trying to put herself between both boys.

“But you know what I think?” Scott asked.

Spencer groaned. “Well, here we go.”

“I think I’m twice as fast.” Scott quickly charged at Boyd, knocking the bigger teenager onto the ground.

Spencer let out a heavy breath and reached forward, grabbing the back of Scott’s shirt. “You said you didn’t want to fight.” Spencer seethed, throwing Scott backwards, getting him off of Boyd.

When the boys were on their feet again, Derek was standing next to Spencer. “She failed the test.” Derek said.

“Yeah, which doesn’t prove anything.” Scott argued. “Lydia’s different.”

“I know.” Derek agreed. “At night, she turns into a homicidal walking snake.”

“I’m not gonna let you kill her.”

Derek smiled. He looked to Boyd and Spencer, then back at Scott. “Who said I was gonna do it?”

Scott tilted his head to the side, confused. He then recalled that Derek had other betas. Scott looked back at the school and tried to make a run for it, figuring out their plan.

“Check him.” Spencer said to Boyd.

Boyd quickly knocks Scott down to the ground.

Scott stayed on the ground for a moment, coughing and trying to recover from the blow to his stomach.

“I don’t know why you think you have to protect everyone now, Scott.” Derek said. “But, even so, Lydia has killed people and she’s gonna do it again. Next time, it’s gonna be one of us.”

“What if you’re wrong?” Scott asked.

“She was bitten by an alpha. It’s her.”

“You saw the thing up close. You know that it’s not like us.”

“But it is!” Derek insisted. “We’re all shapeshifters. You don’t know what you’re dealing with. It rarely happens, and it happens for a reason.”

“What reason?”

“Sometimes the shape you take reflects the person that you are.” Derek said, reaching a hand down to help Scott off of the ground.

Scott takes Derek’s hand and gets to his feet. “What does that mean?” He asked, looking to his best friend.

“It means there’s a reason that Lydia turned into something other than a werewolf. I mean it makes sense. Even Stiles calls her cold-blooded.”

“Well, what if she’s immune?” Scott paused, waiting for Derek to respond. “What if she’s got something inside of her that makes her immune to the bite, which is why she didn’t get paralyzed?”

“No one’s immune!” Derek pushed. “I’ve never seen it or heard of it. It’s never happened.”

“What about Jackson. That’s why you tested him, isn’t it?” Scott looked to Spencer. “Derek bit Jackson. He gave him what he wanted, didn’t he?”

“Scott…” Spencer started, but wasn’t able to finish because Scott continued.

“Peter said the bite either kills you or turns you.”

“You should know it’s not that simple!” Spencer argued.

“You were probably hoping that he would die!” Scott shouted, getting in Derek’s face.

Spencer looked to Derek, having just realized that herself. “Was that what you wanted?”

Scott continued his rant, not giving Derek the chance to answer. “But nothing happened right?”

“No!” Derek shouted.

“I have a theory, too!” Spencer said, putting herself between Derek and Scott.

Scott furrowed his brow, wondering what Spencer could have to say.

“Jackson was sick.” Spencer explained. ”What was happening to him looked exactly like what Derek told me was supposed to happen if my body had rejected the bite. So I talked to Deaton. We made something to take Jackson’s pain away while he died. We made him something from my book. Next day he was better. Maybe what I gave him, stopped him from dying.”

“That doesn’t excuse you guys killing Lydia.”

“Look, I can’t let her live!” Derek shouted, pushing Spencer out of his way. “You should have known that!”

“We just don’t want you to be next, Scott.” Spencer reasoned. “Or me, Stiles, or Allison. She has to be stopped.”

“I was hoping I would convince you, but then…” He trailed off, looking towards the school, “I wasn’t counting on it.”

Spencer furrowed her brow as she was confused. “What?” she asked. “What are you doing?”

“Protecting Lydia.” Scott said before he ran back into the building.

“He was distracting us. We were trying to stall him and he stalled us.” Spencer said, upset that she had been fooled.

“Where are they going?” Derek asked, trying to get her back on track.

Spencer looked around the field, digging into her mind. “The only place he would think to go is his house.”

“Are you sure?”

“Pretty sure.” Spencer said, hopeful, looking up to Derek. “Scott’s smart, but he’s not smart enough to go somewhere we wouldn’t think about.”

Derek started to run towards Scott’s house.

“Boyd, go with him!” Spencer groaned, realizing that her first plan hadn’t worked. She hurried to Derek’s car, turning the key that was still in the ignition. Spencer pulled out of the parking lot and took out her phone to called Isaac.

“Hello?” Isaac answered.

“You and Erica need to get to Scott’s house now. Derek and I are going there now.”

“What happened to taking her out here?”

“She’s not here anymore. That’s the point. Scott’s not gonna let us alone with her. We have to take everyone else out first. They left the school.”

“You sure?”

“When are people gonna stop asking me that?” Spencer exasperated before hanging up her phone. When she pulled up to Scott’s house, Derek had already been standing outside the house, watching as they moved about inside. “What happened?”

“They’ve barricaded themselves in.” He huffed.

“Of course they did.” Spencer took a deep breath to calm herself. “I called Isaac. He and Erica are on their way.” When Isaac and Erica arrived just five minutes later, it was starting to get dark. “We’ve got to get in there.” Spencer insisted. “Somehow. Maybe around back, or through a window. But it definitely has to be before Lydia goes crazy and starts killing everyone.”

“You know the house better than any of us.” Erica snapped. “You do it.”

Spencer rolled her eyes and turned to Isaac. “Scott’s mom always leaves her window open. You can get in through there.” Spencer looked back to the house. “Take out Allison and Stiles at the door, preferably without landing either one of them in the hospital. After that, we’ll make our own way in.”

“Alright.” Isaac responded, making his way towards the back of the house without gaining the attention of the other teenagers in the house.

Spencer took a deep breath. “He’ll be fine.”

“Who are you trying to convince?” Boyd asked Spencer.

“Myself, mostly.” The redhead admitted, trying to listen into the house to find out when Isaac had Stiles and Allison distracted. Once she knew that the two weren’t guarding the door anymore, Spencer sent in Erica.

The three that were left to stand outside the house could only listen in on what was going on inside the house. All the curtains had been drawn and, unfortunately, x-ray vision wasn’t an ability of a werewolf.

Derek was confident that Isaac and Erica had the situation under control on the inside. He had a smirk on his face, Spencer had noticed, realizing that he had won. That was, until both of the Betas came flying out of the front door.

Spencer crouched down next to Isaac, noticing that he was knocked out and attempted to wake him up. She looked back up the house for a moment and saw that Scott was standing there.

Derek sighed. “I think I’m finally getting why you keep refusing me, Scott. You’re not an omega. You’re already an alpha of your own pack.” Dereks miled. “But you know you can’t beat me.”

“I can hold you off until the cops get here.” Scott assured.

Spencer’s ears perked up at the sound. She looked back to the two teenagers in front of her. She noticed Erica wasn’t knocked out, but she wasn’t moving. Spencer’s eyes widened. “You can’t move, can you?”

“No.” Erica managed to get out.

“What’s wrong?” Derek asked.

“We have a bigger problem than the cops.” Spencer said, standing to her feet.

Derek looked back up at the house and noticed that there were footsteps moving around. He glared at the monster.

The kanima came out of one of the upstairs window and looks at Derek and his pack.

Spencer took a couple small steps backwards towards Derek, so he lightly put a hand on her lower back.

Derek looked to Boyd. “Get them out of here.” he ordered. “Take the car.”

Boyd threw Isaac over his shoulder, while Spencer tried to help him get a hold on Erica so he could take them both in one go.

Spencer looked to Derek as Boyd walked away. “What do we do now?”

“We follow it.” Derek said, as he took off running. He sprinted fast as he tried to keep up with the kanima. Derek and Spencer found themselves following the monster into the warehouse district just outside of town. The maneuvered through the alleyways, taking the sharp corners to keep on the kanima’s trail.

Spencer tried to follow directly behind Derek, but he could move too fast for her to keep up. She managed to keep on his tail a few yards behind him. Spencer watched Derek as he climbed a tall fence and front-flipped himself over the top of it. “How the hell did he do that?” Spencer asked aloud, barely holding onto her breath.

Derek landed on the ground, wolfed out and in a crouched position. He growled at the kanima who continued to run away from him. “Just do it.” Derek ordered, racing off after the creature.

Spencer copied his actions and managed to land gracefully on the concrete. She smiled brightly. Spencer hadn’t been able to test out her abilities like this since she’d been bitten. So far, she liked it. Spencer quickly continued to chase after Derek, keeping her sights on him, but not catching up until he was stopped underneath a bridge. Spencer took in a few deep breaths. “Where’d it go?” she asked.

Derek looked around. “I don’t know.”

Spencer turned around in her spot, facing the direction she had just come from. Her eyes quickly caught a flash of green that fell from overhead. Spencer’s heart started beating fast and she gulped.

“What’s wrong?” Derek asked.

“Found him.” She responded in a small voice.

Derek quickly turned in her direction and stepped in front of her, putting himself between her and the kanima. He growled at it just as the kanima hissed at them.

The kanima launched itself at Derek, backing him against one of the supports of the bridge. They had a struggle for a moment before Derek distracted the kanima so that he could reverse their positions.

Derek had the kanima against the support now. He attempted to punch the creature, but the kanima moved out of the way and Derek hit the wall, taking out a chunk of it. This made Derek hesitate for just a moment, making it easy for the kanima to grab him and throw him across the ground. Derek quickly grabbed a piece of scrap that was on the ground next to him, jumped to his feet, and used it as a shield.

Spencer had been watching from a few yards away. She was getting frustrated just standing around and watching Derek struggle to defeat the kanima. The creature was harder to beat than they thought. They were severely unprepared. Spencer took a deep breath and took a step towards the two who were fighting.

“Red! Don’t even think about it!”

“I have to do something!” Spencer argued, standing in front of the kanima and scratching at it’s back.

The kanima felt the cuts and pushed Spencer back with it’s tail, not even looking in her direction.

Spencer groaned in her spot on the ground two yards away, putting a hand to the back of her head that had hit the ground hard. She pushed herself into a seated position and looked to her fingers, noticing blood. “Great.” Spencer mumbled.

The kanima’s full attention was back onto Derek as he backed the alpha up against the bridge support again. It hisses.

Derek growled in the kanima’s face and pushed it away with the piece of scrap making it stumble back and fall to the ground.

It isn’t on the floor for long and it recovers quickly, jumping to it’s feet and climbing up a support pole, hanging on the bridge.

Derek growled again, taunting the creature to come back onto the ground.

The kanima blew out one of the lights at the top, burning Derek’s and Spencer’s eyes for a moment. While their both distracted, the kanima then jumps down, grabs Derek’s jacket, and throws him to the ground and into the darkness behind Spencer.

Spencer looks back at the kanima who is looking at her. She swallowed her fear, thinking of a plan of attack. However, both her and the kanima’s attention was drawn to an approaching vehicle, a door slamming, and a gun cocking. Spencer looked towards the car, the person’s face momentarily drowned out by the bright lights behind her. The man took a few steps towards her with his gun raised and she finally saw the face.

Chris Argent.

There was no way for Spencer to hide her fear from this man. She was a newly turned werewolf, and after all the trouble that he’s gone through to get to Isaac, the Argents’ new target could definitely be her. She pushed herself backwards with her feet, scooting against the concrete. Spencer’s heart beat in her chest until she noticed Argent was pointing the gun at the kanima.

While Argent was focused on shooting the kanima, Derek rushed over and grabbed Spencer from the ground and pulled her into the safety of the darkness. They stayed close, watching the rest of the scene play out as Argent shot the kanima down.

Argent started to walk around the incapacitated kanima, gun still raised, probably hoping that Spencer and Derek would come out of the darkness and show themselves.

Spencer let out a breath, realizing that the kanima problem was solved.

Or at least, she thought it was.

A minute passed and the kanima started to move.

“Derek.” Spencer said, quietly, barely holding onto herself. “It’s still alive.”

“What?” Derek questioned, focusing more on the kanima that was pushing itself off of the ground behind Argent. “We have to get out of here.” Derek insisted.

“We can’t just leave him here!” Spencer whispered, gesturing to Argent with her arm.

“Gerard is in that car and I’m not sticking around to see what happens with that.”

Spencer hesitated, looking back at the kanima that just hissed at Argent, who was out of luck. He had emptied his entire clip into the kanima. The older man, Gerard, who had stepped out of the car, didn’t have much of a defense against it either.

“Red! Let’s go!” Derek said, pulling her arm roughly.

“Wait!” Spencer snapped back, forcing her arm out of Derek’s grasp. She smelled a familiar scent in the air. A second later, Scott appeared, pushing the kanima away from Gerard. Spencer furrowed her brow. “Why would Scott save him like that? After everything he said that night you found the omega?”

“It doesn’t matter. Let’s just go!”

“No! The kanima is getting away again.” Spencer said before quickly running after it.

“Spencer, wait!” Derek shouted.

Spencer didn’t stop though. She kept running after the kanima, not even knowing what she would do when she finally came across it. All that the redhead knew was that she had to catch it. Spencer felt as if she had to prove herself. She was tired of letting the other betas take the heat while she sat back and watched. Erica seemed to be irked by that fact, which might be why the blonde snapped at her earlier in the night. The other betas were taking all the hits while Spencer sat back, protected by her alpha. Spencer wasn’t really pulling her weight physically and she knew it. This wasn’t what she signed up for. Spencer wanted the bite so that she could protect herself. She wanted to feel that power, she just had to get Derek to let her feel it.
