Prologue
“Alice, meet Ben.”
How dreadfully ordinary it must sound to you - the greatest moment of my life.
“Hi Ben.”
How dull and boring and uninspirational. How quiet and toned down.
“Ben doesn’t say much.”
How plain and average. There are no explosions, no fireworks, and no tingles all over. Only eye-contact.
“I see.”
Such an everyday event, so trivial, so normal. A gloomy Monday in March, and a young girl being introduced to the man she is to be working for in the next months of her life. And old, tired man, a man with a child, with a common job and a look on his face like he doesn’t care one bit about who she is.
A very ordinary meeting, indeed, it must seem like to you.
But not to me.
To me, you see, that moment - as I looked at that man with the disinterested face and the distant eyes - that was the very moment I fell in love for the first time.
"I think you'll get alone fine."
