The Difference

Chapter 2

It is early August and I am on the computer searching for the White House Internship requirements. After about fifteen minutes I realized that as of now that I wasn't eligible due to my age. At first I was a little upset but then started thinking that the application deadline was not for another two to four months. Knowing that my birthday is in three weeks, I can apply next month and hope for the best. Three weeks pass by and I thought nothing but the White House Internship. I quickly sat down at the computer and went to the website to apply. I filled out the personal information section out first because it was the easiest part of the application. Immediately, nerves came upon me when it asked for my education. Yes I has graduated college but i am not yet enrolled in a college or university. I didn't want to leave it blank nor lie. I had skipped that section and went to References. Right there my confidence had come back because I know that the people i would list would say positive things about me. the next section of the application asked about the government agencies/offices of my interest. I had listed the Chief Human Capital Officers Council, the Copyright Office, the Office of Government Ethics, the White House Office of Administration, and the White House Commission on Presidential Scholars. Then came the challenging part of the application, the essay. Knowing that I wasn't really good with essays, I panicked a little. the essay had to be at least 300 words. I had to explain my commitment to public service or service to our country in general, which of the President's policies, initiatives, or campaign achievements were most important to me and why, and one of my offices of interest and why i would like to work there. The essay itself took about three hours for me to do but I am sure and I am positive that I did this easy the right way. I went back to the education section of the application and i still did not know what to put down. I decided to leave it blank and see what happens. I was a little upset because i left it blank and it can cause me the internship. I finally clicked submit and my heart literately felt like it dropped. After I clicked submit I started to wonder if they would even bother looking at it. My mother came in my room and saw the application website and said to me,"Do you realize how hard it is to get that internship? You have a one in a thousand chance of getting it." I looked to her in a positive attitude and replied,"Maybe that one person is me." She put her hand on my shoulder and then walked out of my room. Several days passed by and not a single e-mail came. I am still anxious about the internship in general because if I do get the internship, I will most likely have to move. Suddenly the phone rings and I rush to the phone with so much excitement. I answer the phone with a professional hello. My mother replies,"Well hello there. Any luck yet?" I laughed and replied,"Hey mom. I thought you would be the White House but you better. But for the internship i got nothing yet but I hope that something happens soon." She replied," I hope something good happens out of this as well." As the day goes on, I sit on the computer playing a game until an idea hits me. I wondered if I should reapply for the internship. After thinking that through, I felt like I would definitely not get it if i kept applying. I sighed and got up to go outside. I looked toward the left and it was nothing but emptiness. I looked the other way and there she was. I had never seen her around here before. She was absolutely amazing. She had noticed me looking at her and she smiled a little but i looked away quickly. Little did I know about the new neighbors having a daughter. I walked to the end of my mailbox to get a better glimpse of her. I had seen her walk inside her house and i imagined her and I together. I walked towards my mailbox and I got the mail. I looked through the mail and a white envelope had come for me from the White House. I was in complete shock when I saw the envelope in my hands. I rushed inside to the phone. I had called my mother and told her to get home as soon as she can. About 30 minutes later my mother came in the front door. There she saw me standing there with a big smile on my face holding an envelope addressed to me from the White House. My mother got really excited and told me to quickly open it and read what it says. I opened the envelope and it read,
