A Better Reality

She Only Reveals What She Wants You To See

I just finished decorating my room with Cathy when I decided to walk downstairs and grab a refreshment. I was thrown off guard by three boys gawking at me as I walked through the living room and into the kitchen.

“Rian, that’s your step sister?” I heard one boy say as I entered the kitchen and I couldn’t help but scoff.

“Yes,” I heard Rian reply, quite annoyed actually.

“She’s hot,” I heard another boy say and I couldn’t help but gag. I hate it when boys refer to girls as hot, my body temperature is normal. After grabbing a bottle of water I walked back into the living room where I felt 3 sets of eyes staring at me.

“If you’re going to talk about someone I suggest you do it in a whisper so they don’t hear you. And to whichever one of you hooligans called me hot, I am not hot. My body temperature is actually quite normal,” I said while standing in front of them when my hand on my hip.

“Atta sis,” I heard Rian say from behind me and I simply turned around and gave him a small smile.

“What if we wanted you to hear us? You know as a conversation starter?” A boy said. His hair had random blonde patches in it, it was quite hideous if you ask me.

“Well, if I wanted to talk to a skunk I would go to a forest, but do I? No I do not,” I said and skunk boy cowered into the couch further than he already was, and a boy next to him busted out laughing. The boy next to him had brown hair that swept over his forehead with a pair of matching brown eyes, aside from his messy hair he looked quite normal.

“Do I entertain you?” I said to him and he just nodded his head. “Well, I’m glad you’re amused,” I said while making my way for the stairs.

“Hey Eleanor! I forgot to introduce you to my friends!” Rian hollered after me and I quickly turned around and walked back towards the living room.

“Well, introduce me then.”

“Oh, right. Guys this is my step sister Eleanor. Eleanor, the one with skunk hair is Jack, the one to his left is Alex, and the quiet one to Jack’s right is Zack,” Rian said while pointing to each boy as he mentioned their names. I made a mental note of their names matched to their faces, I have a photographic memory so I wouldn’t be forgetting their names.

“It’s a pleasure to meet you all, now if you’ll excuse me I’d like to go freshen up. I feel disgusting,” I said and made my way to my bedroom to shower and change.

-Alex-

“Dude, she’s hot and feisty, I think I might start coming over more bro,” Jack said from beside me and I just shook my head and scoffed at him.

“What’s her deal? Why does she seem so uptight?” I asked Rian who sat in a chair across the room.

“I’m not really sure, she’s kind of always been like that. She grew up in the city and her mom is like really stuck up. I guess she gets it from her mom?” Rian said while playing with a piece of his shaggy hair and I just nodded my head.

“I like her,” Zack said, finally speaking since band practice ended an hour ago. “She bashed Jack and got him to shut up, so she’s automatically cool in my book.” We all laughed at his reason for liking her. As soon as we all settled down Rian’s mom walked down the stairs with yellow paint on her face.

“Hello boys,” she greeted us and took a seat next to her son.

“Mom, you have paint on your face,” Rian groaned, embarrassed by his mom.

“Oops, sorry. I was helping Eleanor get her room painted and situated. Speaking of Eleanor, did you introduce her to the boys?” Rian’s mom asked him while patting his leg trying to get his attention.

“Yes ma’am.”

“I don’t like her,” Jack said from beside me with a pout on his face. “She called me a skunk.” Mrs. Dawson just shook her head at Jack and laughed at him. That’s all you really can do when Jack does something dumb.

“Well, I’m going to get dinner ready. Alex, Jack, Zack will you be joining us?” She asked once she stood up and stood in the doorway of the kitchen. We all shook our heads yes.

“Rian I’m gonna go get a movie from your room,” I said when I rose from my seat. I figured we could occupy ourselves until dinner was ready with a movie of my choice. I jogged up the stairs and made my way down the hall humming a Blink 182 song, they’re my favorite band. I walked into Rian’s room and grabbed Pirates of the Caribbean, the first one, and walked out of his room. I was walking back down the hall when I noticed Eleanor in her room having a hard time hanging up a frame.

“Hey, do you need help?” I asked from her door way and she quickly spun around on her heels with a look of terror on her face.

“Oh gosh, you scared me!” She said, grabbing her chest.

“Sorry ‘ bout that. But anyways, want some help?” I asked again and she looked at her frame and then looked back at me.

“I’d really appreciate it,” she said and I walked into her room, threw the movie on her bed and took the frame out of her hands.

“Where would you like it?” I asked while looking into her green eyes that had specks of blue and hazel in them. They were beautiful.

“Right there where the nail is,” she said as she backed away staring at the wall, I’m assuming to tell me if it was crooked or not. I mean I hope that’s why, I put deodorant on today so I know I don’t smell AND I brushed my teeth so it’s not my breath.

“Is it straight?” I asked while holding the frame on the nail.

“Little to the left,” She told me and I moved it, “no your other left,” she said with a hint of laughter in her voice, and I moved it the other direction, “perfect!” She said and I set it on the nail.

“Is that you?” I asked, finally taking a look at the photo in the frame. It was a young girl, with reddish brown hair much like hers, in what looked like a dance recital.

“Yes it is, that was my first dance recital.” I was right. What’s up, I’m never wrong. Duh.

“That’s cool, how long have you been dancing for?” I asked her, signaling if I could take a seat on her bed which she allowed.

“Since I was 4 years old.”

“Wow, that’s a long time! You must be good then.”

“I would like to think so,” she said while shrugging her shoulders.

“You can be cocky, I don’t mind,” I said to her with laughter clear in my voice.

“My mother told me it isn’t polite to brag about myself and my talents,” she said while picking up her cat and petting it.

I looked around me, then back at her and smirked, “I don’t see your mom anywhere,” I said to her, hoping it’d get her to brag.

“I’m not going to brag.”

“Alex! Did you die or something?!” Rian yelled up the stairs and then I remembered why I came up stairs in the first place.

“Coming!” I yelled back and Eleanor winced. “Sorry for yelling. Anyways we were going to watch a movie before dinner, would you like to join us?” I asked her when I stood up and made my way towards her door.

“No thank you, I need to finish getting situated.”

With that I walked out of her room and downstairs where I popped the movie in and plopped down in my spot next to Jack and started to watch my favorite movie ever!

Once we finished the movie Momma Dawson told us dinner was ready and like the growing boys we are we jumped up and ran into the dining room where we took our seats and quickly dug in. After a few minutes had passed Eleanor finally joined us and she quietly scooped some food onto her plate.

“Hey Eleanor?” Jack said from next to Rian.

“Yes Jack?” Eleanor said without looking up from her plate.

“Sorry for calling you hot earlier,” Jack said and everyone except me and Eleanor choked on their food.

“Thank you Jack. Is everyone okay?” Eleanor said with a concerned look on her face.

“They’ll be fine. Jack just hardly ever apologizes, it can be surprising sometimes. You’ll get used to it,” I told her, meeting my eyes with hers. She simply nodded her head and continued eating like the rest of us.

There’s something about this girl that is so intriguing. She keep’s to herself, doesn’t brag about herself, seems pretty cool, and she’s hot. I’d definitely like to tap that. I wonder if she’s ever had sex before, or even a boyfriend before. She doesn’t seem like the type to have friends. I can make that change though. I am Alex Gaskarth after all.
