You Are the Greatest Thing That Ever Happened to Me

There was a knock on the door 30 minutes after John's phone call

"Already?" Stephen asked pointing to the door
"Well, they're pretty stoked to meet these girls" John laughed
"I'll get it" Sierra offered as she stood up and walked to the door
"I'll go with you" John said
"Hello" said the guy with a Mickey Mouse sweater when he saw Sierra
"H-Hi" Sierra stuttered and knowing Sierra, if she stutters when she talks to a guy, that probably means she likes him or she thinks he's cute.
"Hey guys!" John shouted, jeez he's still loud
"Ugh, John do you really have to shout?" the girl who was holding the cans of beer groaned
"Sorry Jess" John apologized. Oh so she's 'the' Jess? John's crush when he was 14? Gosh she's pretty.

John, Sierra, Jess, Mickey Mouse sweater guy and another guy walked in the living room
"Hey guys" Stephen smiled as he got off his seat and gave them each a bro hug "So uh, this is Sierra, Paige and Adelaide" he introduced as Paige and I stood up from our seats.
"And this is Brian" John said, gesturing to the guy in the Mickey Mouse sweater "This is Josh" he continued as he wrapped an arm around the guy with a beanie "And last but not least, this is the beautiful Jess" he smiled
"It's really nice to finally meet you girls" Josh walked over to us and shook our hands while Jess and Brian followed him
"Yeah, we heard a lot about how cool you guys are!" Brian added and shook our hands too
"John and Stephen told a lot about you guys and how fun you are to hang out with" Jess smiled "Really happy that I won't be the only rose among these thorns" she laughed
"Oh c'mon, Jess. I know you love us" Brian winked
"You really really love us" Josh laughed as he messed with Jess' hair
"Ugh guys" Jess acted to be angry but she failed to suppress her laugh. Gosh, these people are so nice and funny, just like John and Stephen. I bet we'll get along pretty well.
"It's really nice to meet you guys too" Paige smiled but her eyes locked with Josh's eyes, and knowing Paige, when she can't take her eyes off a guy's eyes, she likes him. Well Josh was also looking into her eyes and they both giggled at the same time like they were having their own world.
"We heard a lot about you guys too. They say you're really lovable and funny people" Sierra said "Well, YOU ARE" she continued
"Oh and we also heard your songs" I said "And I love each and every one of them, and I know every word of every song"
"Really?" Brian asked "Hah! I told you I had a great voice! In your faces!" he howled
"Yeah right" Stephen laughed
"They're just being nice to you, Brian" Josh teased
"Fuck you guys. Like shit, fuck you guys" Brian frowned
"Aw, I think your voice is nice" Sierra smiled "I'm not even kidding"
"Thank you, Sierra" Brian smiled at her and she blushed
"Uh, let us stop talking about Brian's horrible voice and let's open those beers now shall we" John said and we all agreed

We all sat and drank beer in the living room, John sat beside Jess, Sierra and Brian sat beside each other, Paige sat beside Josh and of course Stephen and I sat beside each other. Stephen and I are pretty distant to tell you the truth, sure we did talk to each other but it wasn't like the way we used to seven years ago. This is what I'm afraid of.

"So, they told us you guys drank beer at your suite?" Brian asked me. Just like John, Brian talked a lot, he's the type of person who starts a conversation
"Uh yeah. Who could forget that?" I laughed "The night when we all got drunk and we're not yet even legal"
"Ugh, Chesca was the most drunk person that night" John said
"Who's Chesca?" Josh asked
"Oh Chesca's our friend, we met her at Australia too. But she's not here because she's in med school" John explained "She's a fun person too. Really hope you guys could meet her someday"
"Yeah" Stephen nodded
"Wow, you guys seem pretty bad ass" Jess said "I mean, you guys drank in a hotel and no one caught you? Pure genius"
"Well, we weren't that loud" Paige said "John was the only one screaming and shit"
"Hey I was not!" John defended
"Yeah you were" Stephen laughed
"Oh and who could forget the time when we all couldn't sleep because of John's super loud snore?"
"Ohmygod, I was the one beside him and it feels like I was beside a fucking dying elephant or something" I said and they all laughed, I was really surprise, I mean John, Jess, Josh, Brian, Stephen, Paige and Sierra are laughing their asses off
"Touche, my friend. Touche" Josh laughed
"On the tour bus, John's bunk is above mine and I swear to fucking Superman, I cannot fucking sleep" Jess added
"Imagine, sharing an apartment with him. I could hear him snoring from the other room" Stephen chuckled
"You guys are so fucking mean to me. You guys are fucking assholes" John laughed as he took a sip of his beer
"Love you, John" Jess smiled as she kissed John's cheek
"Aww John, your snoring got you boyfriend points" Brian laughed
"Boyfriend?" Paige said excitedly "Aww John! I'm so proud of you"
"Uh wait no" Jess laughed "We're not going out, Brian's a dumb fuck, don't listen to him" I could feel that Jess felt awkward when Brian said that, I don't know why but I could really feel it, there was a certain tone in her voice
"Jess, you are the meanest person ever" Brian pouted
"Nah. She's nice to us, she's only mean to you" Josh laugh as he pointed his beer to Brian
"Fuck you guys, you're all mean to me" he said
"Even me?" Sierra asked
"No no, not you" Brian grinned. There's something going on between these two.
"So, tell us about tour" Paige asked but she was looking at Josh of course.
"Well, we played a bunch of shows around America" Josh explained
"When will you visit Australia?" I asked
"Soon, I hope" Stephen smiled, oh dear, he still has the best smile ever.
"Oh" I blushed
"Hey Adelaide, tell us, what was it like to have Stephen as your prom date?" Brian asked
"Uh" I started, it's really awkward for me to tell about prom since Stephen and I were super romantic that night, we acted like we were going out and shit, and he even saw Brayden begging for me, and we even kissed. Oh yes, we kissed. shit "I had a fun night with him, to be honest" I smiled
"What song did you guys danced to?" Jess asked
"A lot. There were a lot of songs played that night" I said
"No, I mean slow dance" she giggled
"Oh c'mon Jess, you really expect her to remember? That was like 6 years ago" Josh laughed
"Seven years actually" I corrected him. Seven years, seven fucking years ago, I met a guy named Stephen Gomez, he became a huge part of my life in a short span of time and he left too soon, I didn't see him for seven years, sure I dated a bunch of guys, but no one was like him, he's the best. I didn't feel complete for seven years, a part of me was always missing.
"I Will Follow You Into The Dark" a voice interrupted my thoughts. It was Stephen's voice
"Excuse me?" Jess asked
"I Will Follow You Into The Dark" Stephen said again "I know it's not the ideal song to slow dance to but it's her favorite Death Cab For Cutie song, that's why I played it and we danced" he smiled
"You remember?" I whispered to him
"Of course. Never forgot about it" he whispered back
"Wait wait wait" John said "You? You played the song? What are you? The DJ?" he asked
"Yeah, you weren't the DJ during prom, and they didn't play that song as well" Paige added
"I'm really confused" Sierra said and just as I was about to answer them, Stephen explained:
"Well, we tried to slow dance to that lame song that the DJ at your school was playing but we got bored and we agreed to ditch prom and we watched the city lights from a hill and we danced to that song" Stephen explained
"So you danced?" John asked and Stephen nodded "In a hill?"
"So what?" I said
"I think it's cute" Jess smiled
"We can dance in a hill too if you want" John offered and Jess just gave him a warm smile
"Wow, Stephen" Josh said "I must say, I am impressed"
"I'd do anything for her" Stephen smiled. That sentence, it gave me butterflies, it made my heart skip a beat and it made my cheeks heat up, so to cover up my obvious blush, I took my beer and drank and drank and drank.

The night went fast, I can't even remember how things got to this point, Jess was sitting on the couch and John was laying on her lap, Josh, Paige, Sierra and Brian were passed out on the floor, beer cans all over the room and the stench of alcohol filling the room. I felt dizzy, I felt like puking and I knew I needed fresh air so I stood up and walked to the balcony, trying to slap myself back to reality.
"Hey" a voice said so I turned around and I saw him
"Hello" I smiled and he stood beside me
"Do you remember when I used to sneak up on you whenever you're in the balcony?"
"And you would frighten me? Who could forget that?" I laughed and so did he
"Things are different now, I didn't frighten you"
"Things did change huh? You're in a band now, I'm living my dreams. We're not in High School anymore" I sighed
"Yeah" he nodded
"But you didn't change, Stephen" I said as I looked into his eyes "You're still.... you"
"You didn't change at all, you're still funny, nice, sweet, smart.... beautiful" he said
"Yeah right" I laughed sarcastically
"Hey. It's true!" he defended
"Nah, you're just drunk" I laughed
"I'm not drunk, you know me, I'm always sober" he grinned
"Yeah, some things didn't seem to change. The two of us, we remain sober" I smiled
"Yeah" he nodded "And the two of us.. What are we now? he asked
"What do you mean?"
"What are we? I mean, we were kinda 'an item' seven years ago"
"Oh. I thought you forgot about that" I said
"And why would I?"
"Seven years, Stephen. Do you expect me to believe that you didn't date other girls? And plus, we were never going out" I said
"You're right, I did date a bunch of girls. But none of them were like you, you're the best. The best I never had" he said and I couldn't help but feel so nervous, I felt my stomach tied in knots, my hands shook, my heart skipped a beat, and i just felt so damn nervous "Adelaide, are you okay?" he asked, and then suddenly I found my voice and I said "Y-yeah, I- I---" I stuttered
"What's wrong? Why are you so nervous all of a sudden?" he asked like he read my mind
"Nervous? I'm not nervous" I defended with a sarcastic laugh
"Yes. Yes you are, I know you" he said
"Stephen I- I" I started "The thing is, I never stopped thinking about you, about prom and all the fun we had. I couldn't stop thinking on how happy I was when I'm with you, but the thing is I'm not sure if you were doing the same thing, sometimes I feel like I'm the only one remembering and reminiscing and shit, and you're just forgetting all the memories"
"Are you angry at me for dating girls? Adelaide, you don't expect me to believe that you didn't date guys as well" he said
"I did" I replied "But I didn't take them seriously, please don't judge me with that, I'm not a player. I just... I can't see myself with them in the future, marrying them, having babies with them, growing old with them.. I just couldn't see it with those guys. I still don't believe in love y'know?"
"Same" he sighed "I tried to take those girls seriously but I couldn't because I'm afraid they won't love me as much as I'd love them. I just dated for company"
"Exactly" I laughed "Technically, I didn't have a boyfriend after Brayden, I just went out with a bunch
of guys, kissed some of them and shit but I never had a boyfriend"
"Holy shit, that's exactly what I was doing!" he laughed "But I didn't kiss 'some' of them, I kissed all of them" he laughed and I smiled, and all of a sudden he had a serious face on
"Adelaide, going back to what we were talking about awhile ago" he said "I never forgot about all the fun we had and the memories and stuff. I thought of it every single night, I thought of you every single night"
"Yeah right" I laughed
"I'm serious" he said, he is serious "I know I said that I dated a bunch of girls and they don't mean to me, it's because you're the only one who means to me"
"Stephen, you don't know what you're saying, I'm too complicated for you and--" I said but he cut me off
"Shh, I'm not finished yet" he whispered "You're the only girl for me, Adelaide and I knew it seven years ago, no one will ever be as good as you. You're perfect" he continued and he leaned in and he held my cheek gently and stroked it
"Stephen" I whispered "I never stopped thinking of you" and our faces were a lot closer now
"I missed you so much" he said and just as he was about to press his lips onto mine.... my phone rang and he smiled "Go answer it" he said and I pulled out my phone from my pocket

"Hello?" I answered
"Hi honey!" a female voice greeted, it's mom. I pulled away from Stephen and I gave him an awkward smile and he nodded, he understands.
"Hi mom!"
"So, how are you?" she asked
"I'm fine"
"How's Arizona so far?"
"Amazing! And hot"
"Yeah, it is hot there" she laughed
"You've been here?" I asked
"Yes, that's where umm" she said but something stopped her
"Where what?" I asked
"That's where your father and I met. For the first time" she laughed
"Oh, so this place is special huh?"
"Maybe yes, maybe no. Your father and I are divorced, honey. Nothing to be excited about"
"But that doesn't mean you didn't love each other right?" I said "So Arizona, this is where you first fell in love with dad. That's sweet" I giggled
"Honey, there's nothing to be excited about" she said "Oh dear, why are we talking about my life? I'm asking about you"
"Oh yeah, well" I started while staring at the living room where my passed out friends were laying "I'm having fun, we all are"
"Well that's good. I'm really happy for you, honey" she said
"Thanks mom" I smiled
"I'm really happy you're living your dreams"
"Yeah. It is really surreal, thank you for all the support mom"
"No problem, honey. Oh and on more thing" she said
"What's that?" I asked
"Try to find yourself there okay? Live the life you want as long as it's good and.. find your love and never let him go. I don't want the same thing to happen to you okay I want it to last forever?" she said
"Wow mom, uh thank you so much. It really mean a lot" I smiled
"You're welcome. If you need anything just call me okay? You know you can tell me anything"
"Yes, sure. Call me if you need something too okay? Be careful there" I said
"I will, and you be careful there as well. Goodbye, Adelaide I love you so much honey" she said
"I love you too mom" and after I said that she hung up.

"So who was that?" Stephen, who was walking to me, asked
"My mom" I smiled, feeling a little but awkward because our faces were really close to each other moments ago, and we were about to kiss
"Oh really? I sure do miss your mom" he said
"Yeah, I miss her too" I smiled and then awkward silence filled the air
"Uh, about the uh" Stephen said seconds after to break the silence "About the uh, the thing that was about to happen awhile ago"
"Yeah shit" I laughed awkwardly and so did he "I'm really sorry about that"
"No no, I'M sorry about that" he apologized "I didn't mean to. I don't know what's gotten into me"
"It's okay. Must be the alcohol" I laughed
"Nah" he shrugged
"Yeah, uh so, we're cool right? Everything's cool between us?" I asked
"Totally" he nodded "But Adelaide"
"Yeah?" I asked
"I meant every single thing that I said awhile ago, I really do. I hope you know that" he said and I nodded.
"Uh so, what're we gonna do with them?" I asked pointing to our friends
"This is really embarrassing because it's your first night here but.. can we spend the night here?" he asked "They're really passed out, they're all asleep now. I mean, they're already snoring" he's right they are snoring, especially John
"No. It's fine" I smiled "You can stay here for the night. Nice to have company on our first night here"
"Thanks, Adelaide. I promise this will never happen again" he said
"It's okay! I had a fun night, I met your friends who are now our my friends too and we got to catch up" I smiled
"Yeah" he nodded
"Well uh, we better go to sleep now huh?" I said
"But how? and where?" he asked
"I don't know. That couch?" I suggested pointing to the large couch
"Okay" he smiled and we walked to the big clean couch and we lay beside each other, we were both facing the ceiling
"Good night" I whispered
"Good night Adelaide, sweet dreams" he replied "I missed being beside you"

'Find your love' that's what mom told me, really weird telling that to a person who doesn't believe in love. But one question's going around my mind, will Stephen be my love? Will he make me believe in it? But he doesn't believe in it too. Will he be my love? And is yes, will we last forever?

I'm not sure.... but I hope so.
