You Are the Greatest Thing That Ever Happened to Me

I'm Not Saying Goodbye

Her parents came a week after, her mom was there and her dad was there and her dad's wife was there, her siblings were there, Chesca was there too.

We chose to surprise Adelaide so Sierra, Paige and i decided to pick them up without her knowing. John, Jess, Brian and Josh were nice enough to spend time with her while we were picking up her family at the airport.
Everyone wanted to spend time with her even when she wasn't sick, she was just so fun to be around with.
I remember when she told the gang about her health condition, John was the first one to cry, he couldn't talk properly because there we too many tears coming out of his eyes, I've never seen John cry like that in a long time, the last time he cried that much was when we were kids. The others cried too, we all did, it was just too much to handle. Brian, in all honesty, isn't a crier but yeah he cried hardest next to John.
I don't think I'll ever forget that night, we were all having dinner and the four were wondering why she looked so pale, she couldn't say it to them and then she started crying, how was she supposed to tell her best friends that she's dying? She was courageous enough to say the words "I have cancer". John said it wasn't a nice a joke and Adelaide didn't answer back, she just started crying and John cried and he kept on telling us to say that she's kidding, I wish i could, but I can't because it's not.

--
Mom and dad were there with us, they knew that I proposed to her and that we're engaged, her parents knew about it too, they always supported us.
My dad hugged me when I walked up to them he said "You, be strong. Alright, son?" and I just nodded, my mom hugged me next, she didn't say anything, we was just hugging me and stroking my hair.

Adelaide's mom, Taylor was with Chesca. Paige and Sierra instantly ran towards them as I walked behind
"Ohgod I missed you, rascals so much" I heard Chesca say, they gave Taylor a kiss on the cheek and called her Auntie
"Stephen, dear" Taylor's mom said as she hugged me, I didn't know what to call he so I just called her Auntie as well
"Where's Adelaide?" Chesca asked
"She's at home, with John and the others" I smiled
Adelaide's dad and his wife and children walked towards us
"Hey Mr. Summers" Paige and Sierra smiled, I could feel the awkwardness between Taylor and Carla, her dad's wife but they managed to ignore it
"We should go now. I bet she'd be happy to see you guys" I said

--

Everyone was quiet as we walked down the hallway of the building, and right before we could get in our apartment, Taylor spoke up

"I'm not sure I'm ready to see my daughter like that" she cried and mom hugged her
"Be strong, honey" she whispered
"Is this really happening?" Taylor cried harder "She's a good kid, why is this even happening to her"
"It just does" Mr Summers said, I could tell that he wanted to cry too "Nobody said life was fair"
"You can do it, auntie" Paige smiled
"She's still your Adelaide no matter what" Sierra added and I opened the door. Josh ran to the door to open it more and he smiled when he saw the people, he knew who they were

"Hello everyone" Josh smiled as he let them in "I'm Josh"
"Hey I'm Brian" Brian said walking out the room "She's in here" he said as he gestured to her room.

Mr Summers, Auntie and Chesca were the first ones who rushed to her
"Hey guys" she smiled weakly and I couldn't help but keep my eyes from watering, it just really hurts me to see her like that
"Dude" Chesca cried and she hugged her "Dude" she said again
"Dude, don't cry. I'm still here" Adelaide smiled
"Hey, honey" Mr. Summers smiled and that's when his tears start to fall "How's daddy's princess?"
"I'm okay" she smiled "Hey mom"
"Addie" Auntie said as she kissed her daughter's hand
"I missed you guys so much
"We're going to get you help, darling" Mr. Summers sniffed
"But the doctor said--"
"Nonsense, darling" her dad cut her off with his astonishing Australian accent "I know a lot of doctors who can help you"
"Geoff" Auntie said, I don't know who Geoff is but I'm sure he's a common friend of theirs
"Or we could just spend my remaining days together" she smiled
"Honey, it's not supposed to be this way" Mr. Summers insisted "Please try"
"Dad, don't cry" Adelaide tried to stop her dad but it was too late, Mr. Summers was already crying uncontrollably
"I'm sorry, Adelaide" he cried "I know I should man up and be strong for you but, this is just too much. I hope you understand, darling"
"It's okay dad" she smiled
"I love you, darling" he smiled and he stood up and hid himself. He let himself out of the apartment and his wife came with him.
"Addie?" her stepsister, Kayla said as she approach her and sat beside her on the bed
"Hey Kayle" Adelaide whispered and kissed her head "How're you doing, lovely?"
"I should be asking you that" Kayla said
"I'm doing fine" she smiled
"Addie, please don't go" her stepbrother, Joey said
"I'm not going anywhere" Adelaide said
"Please get help. I want to spend more time with you" Joey said "We only get to spend time with each other when you're at dad's house, but that stopped for quite awhile and now..... and now you're sick"
"I'm sorry I didn't get to spend more time with you, sport"
"Don't leave, Addie" Kayla pouted
"I'm not going anywhere" she said "I'll always be in here" as she put her hand on Kayla's chest
Kayla didn't say anything, she just hugged her

Her family were staying at a hotel with my parents, Chesca stayed with us in the apartment to talk more.

We watched movies, drank booze and played shitty games, as usual. It didn't seem to bore us, people may think it's corny but we think it's fun.

Adelaide didn't drink though, she was just on the couch laughing and laughing and laughing, she seemed really happy. She always say "I'm so lucky I have you guys" and laugh harder and that means a lot to me.

Everyone was passed out in the living room. Chesca and Jess got drunk since they played 'Beer Queen' the winner of the game will obviously be the Beer Queen, it was hard to decide who won since they were both smashed as hell. Brian, Josh, Paige and Sierra played beerpong, they were really good at improvising the materials, they had to run down the convenience store nearby to buy cups and they used John's pingpong ball. They got pretty smashed too but Sierra was really good at it she could take it.
It was about 2am, I really needed to pee. I don't know how i ended up laying down on John feet but I was. I ran to the bathroom and peed like it was the best thing that ever happened to me. I walked drowsily back to the living room, Adelaide wasn't in the couch, my heart skipped and I ran around to find her. I know where she was, she was at the balcony.

I saw standing there and I walked up to her, she was crying. It's been a long time since I saw her cry
"Hey" I said as I hugged her
"Why are you up?" she sniffed, trying to hide the fact that she has been crying
"I had to pee" I chuckled "What's wrong, love?"
"Nothing" she shook her head
"Oh c'mon. I know you. What is it?"
"I'm just super overwhelmed with you all being here for me" she smiled
"You know we'll always be here for you" I smiled
"Yeah" she nodded and started crying, this time she couldn't hold it back
"Adelaide" I whispered as I stroked her hair "It's going to be okay"
"I'll miss you" her voice cracked and it felt like someone punched a hole in my chest
"Why is it like you're saying goodbye?" I asked, now I felt like crying
"Because I'm going to sooner or later"
"No" I shook my head and I held her tighter "Please, don't say that"
"Stephen, you have to accept that I'm not going to be here for long"
I couldn't say anything
"I'm going to miss everyone" she said "I don't want to die, Stephen" she said and she cried even harder. I didn't know what to say, what was I supposed to say? That she wasn't?
"I don't want to die but I don't have a fucking choice" she choked "I'm scared, I'm so fucking scared"
"Don't be" I whispered "Come here" I said and we walked back into the room, she lay down on the bed and hugged a pillow, I took my Ipod out and I crawled beside her. I gave her one earphone and I plugged the other to my ear. She wasn't facing me so I just hugged her from behind. I played the first song we ever danced to, I Will Follow You Into The Dark by Death Cab For Cutie.
She cried instantly at the first sentence of the song.
"Thank you" she sniffed, she stopped crying
"I love you, Adelaide" I whispered "Nothing's ever going to change that"
"I love you" she said back
