The New Queen

Disappointment

The day of the team final was the most stressful day of them all for the girls. Anna couldn’t sleep, Vika couldn’t eat, Maria had to pull herself together to help Anna. Anna couldn’t sleep knowing the team was literally carried on her back. She didn’t want to be the one to screw it all up. What if she messed up everything and they didn’t win a medal? This was different from just a world title, the world championships are just a lead up to the Olympics. She’s always been told that. Now she’s here and she can’t shake the feeling of extreme anxiousness.
She got maybe four hours of sleep when Maria finally got some sleeping drugs for her to take. They both tried to take advantage of sleep.
The next day the coaches got the girls together for the final. Anna couldn’t really eat much, but since it’s her birthday she enjoyed a birthday breakfast.
The girls warmed up that afternoon to prepare for the final that night. Anna messed up everything she tried to do. She was shaking, her limbs felt like jello, she couldn’t function. Evgeny tried to relax her but she couldn’t shake the feeling. That’s what happened when she got nervous. At her first world championships she didn’t get nervous, she felt at home because she knew it meant nothing compared to the Olympics. Now that she was here she wished she kind of took Worlds more seriously.
When it was time to compete the Russian’s were lined up in front of the Chinese girls. Since they qualified first, they would start first on vault. Anna was second into the rotation. They needed her up last but Viktoria could benefit from a high score since she has the more consistent amanar.
Aliya did her job by sticking her DTY. Anna felt a bit nauseas but she did it, and if she threw up Evgeny would have a bucket there, he always did. Anna stuck her amanar cold. That didn’t give her much confidence. She stuck vaults a lot. She was hoping for a stick during the vault final, too.
During bars Anna went first. She missed a connection. She accidently forgot to add in the tkatchev after the skill she has named after her. She would lose a bit of points for that but she would be fine. She scored a 14.7, not great since she scored a 15.2 during qual but they wer fine. Viktoria and Aliya put up scores in the 15.6-15.9 range.
They moved to beam, Anna was feeling the heat now. Beam was the event where she was really good on. With bars she didn’t have to post a high score, she just needed to stay on. With beam she was expected to post a high score.
She was going last. Aliya and Viktoria did their jobs by posting scores in the 14.5-15.1 range. They weren’t keeping track of where they were in the standings.
Anna went up and all through out the routine she did her best to stay on, by the end of the routine she was looking for a stick dismount. She went for the round off full twisting double pike and guess what? She landed it like she usually lands it. On her hands.
“Fuck” she cursed. She couldn’t tell which hit the mat first…her feet or her hands. She assumed it was her feet. She got up, saluted the judges and walked off the podium. Anna was a bit of a diva like Aliya. She didn’t want Evgeny to try to comfort her in any way. She went into the corner and tried to pull herself together.
“Should we say something?” Aliya asked.
“No, leave her” Maria said. “Don’t try to make her feel better”
The Russian’s looked at the standings. Evgeny told them that after vault they were in first and then after bars they were in second and now they had no idea. The Chinese were going to over take them for sure.
The team was in second after beam. Anna scored a 14.900 which was actually higher than what Aliya scored and slightly higher than what Anna got so it wasn’t bad.
After that Anna really wanted to make things up. She carried the team she didn’t want the reason to be why they didn’t get a gold. They went to floor where Maria went first she’s not the best floor worker but she’s better than Viktoria and more consistent than Aliya. She got a 14.5. Ksenia went next and rocked it. She made up for her routine in London four years ago. She scored a 15 even. Anna went last, feeling the pressure. She needed a routine out of the park to take the lead a 15.5 score to be exact. Some may say it’s impossible but she had the skill.
She went on the floor and threw it out of the park. She stuck every single tumbling pass and made up for that butchered dismount. Though, she scored a 15.450 which was just .5 out of reach of the gold medal.
The girls cried over their lost. What a lousy 19th birthday gift.
