We'll Work It Out

Amelia Grace

After 8 hours of being in labour, little Amelia Grace Garfield was born weighing 8 pounds 3 ounces. She was full term being born a day before her due date. She had a mop of dark hair on top of her head.

I looked down at the baby in my arms and I couldn't help but smile. As soon as she had been placed in my arms I forgot about all the pain. Amelia was worth it all.

So much had happened in the last few months before her arrival. Andrew and I got engaged and married three weeks later. I started bleeding at one stage but it was nothing. Apparently some women do get bleeding during pregnancy. Some women even still get their period during pregnancy. I had three false labours. I was glad the fourth time was the real one.

I watched Amelia as she started to squirm in my arms. I couldn't tear my eyes away from her even when I heard someone come into the room.

"Is she still asleep?" Andrew's voice filled the room. Even after all this time knowing each other his accent still made my knees weak. He had gone to get us something to eat. I wasn't feeling like hospital food right now.

"Yeah she is. I think she's dreaming. She won't stop squirming," I smiled finally looking up at him.

"That she gets from you," he laughed. He always joked about me being the world’s worst sleeper.

"Shut up," I playfully glared at him.

"I brought McDonalds." He said changing the subject. "And also you have some visitors."

"Who?" I asked as he placed the bag of food on the bed. He took Amelia out of my arms and placed her in the plastic crib. I reached for the food and took what I wanted out of the bag.

"Brook and Jesse,"

Brook was my younger sister and Jesse was her lawyer boyfriend. "You can tell them to come in,"

Andrew nodded and went out to get them. They followed him back in. Brook rushed over to me hugging me tightly. "Congratulations momma bear," she whispered into my ear kissing the side of my head.

"Thanks," I said as we let each other go. I looked to Jesse who placed a basket of baby stuff on an empty chair. He walked over and gave me a hug also.

"She's so beautiful," I heard my sister gush. I looked over at her and saw her looking down at Amelia. "What's her name?"

"Amelia Grace Garfield," I smiled. "You can hold her if you want to,"

"I don't know, she looks peaceful, I don't want to disturb her,"

"You won't, she'll just squirm a little then settle back down," I reassured her.

I watched as Brook picked Amelia up from the crib and held her, "hello little Amelia, I'm your Aunt Brooklyn, but you can call me your favourite Auntie B," Brook cooed at the new-born.

I couldn't help but smile.

"She is beautiful," Jesse said standing next to Brook looking over her shoulder.

"You can hold her," I told Jesse.

"It will give you practice for when your own little one comes along." Andrew piped up.

"You told him?" Brook looked up at Jesse. "I wanted to tell them together!"

"Tell us what?" I asked confused looking between my sister and her partner.

"We found out yesterday, I'm pregnant," brook answered, looking from Jesse to me.

"I didn't actually know. I just thought one day you two would have one of your own," Andrew said surprised. He looked just as surprised as I did.

"Congrats you two," I smiled when the shock wore off.

"I wanted to tell you two when you had Amelia all settled and into routine. We didn't want to steal your thunder," brook said placing Amelia back in the crib.

"You didn't steal our thunder," I smiled. "I'm happy for the both of you."

"Thanks," Jesse smiled.

"We should get going, Jesse has an appointment with a client and I have a niece to spoil." Brook smiled. "I'm glad you're both doing great. Let me know when you get home and I'll come around for lunch,"

"We will," I smiled.

After Brook and Jesse left, Amelia started crying. Andrew picked her up out of the crib and brought her over to me. I started feeding her as Andrew sat next to me.

"I love you," he said when I looked at him.

"I love you too," I replied looking back up at him. "I love you and Amelia," I looked down at the baby in my arms, falling back asleep against my chest as I fed her. "I love our little family."
