Get Your Kicks

Brenna Dawson

When I first woke up that morning, my thoughts were flooded with Niall, and, well, that didn’t make any sense at all. I dreamt of him that night – of him flying on a dragon and slaying a giant squid – so I could guess that was why he was on my mind. But, my thoughts weren’t about him being an immortal hero. My thoughts were about his soft blonde hair and the sweet look he always seemed to have in his eyes.

I wasn’t an idiot; I knew why I was thinking those things. I didn’t know why or how it happened, but I had a crush on Niall, and that was a problem. I wasn’t supposed to get crushes on boys. That sort of things was saved for girls like Darcy. I knew what happened to girls who had crushes on boys, and it always ended with a pile of tears on the bathroom floor.

I knew how stupid it was to get feelings for a guy, but still I had done it with two different boys in a very short span of time, and both of them were superstars no less.

The truth was that I had done an excellent job masking my feelings for Harry. I didn’t think he or anyone else had noticed my passing crush on the curly headed boy, and maybe that was the reason it had passed so quickly. I didn’t have a chance to indulge in it, so my mind got rid of it as quickly as it could. That, and the fact that he’d been with Darcy instead.

Yes, that definitely had to be it. I was a smart girl and I was able to get rid of my feelings for Harry with hardly any effort on my part, and I was about to do the same thing with Niall. I had to do the same thing with Niall. He might not have been known as a heart throb like Harry was, but anyone with eyes could see that he was just as dangerous.

Getting rid of Niall might not be as easy as getting rid of Harry though, because Niall seemed to be a tad bit more interested in me than Harry was. I wasn’t sure about it at first, because it started off small.

It was just him trying to help me make up with Darcy. Then it was him standing in the pool with me, however brief that time was. It was the funny look he gave me when I was getting off the elevator that night. And then it was him bringing me lunch the very next day.

To be fair, he brought lunch for everyone, but Taylor and I were the only ones there to eat it.
Taylor was more than reluctant to accept Niall’s food, but she was hungry, so she did it with sarcastic remark falling from her lips. Niall just laughed at her, knowing she was joking, before passing me a plastic bowl filled with soup.

It was a little warm for soup, but I wasn’t going to say anything, and I happily began eating it, with Niall pulling out twice as much food for himself. I couldn’t help but smile at him as he ate, while asking me how I slept that night. I thought about telling him about my dream, but I thought it strange and instead asked him how his night was.

He chuckled, shaking his head. “You’re never going to believe the dream I had.” He gulped down a large bit of bread before washing it down with a sip of water. “I was some knight or something, in some far off land. I flew on a dragon and went kingdom to kingdom slaying all these wicked beasts. Squids, to be exact. It was quite heroic, honestly.”

I couldn’t help but freeze, a spoonful of soup halfway to my mouth. Did it mean anything that Niall and I had similar dreams? Probably not. Was it strange as hell? Absolutely.

After a momentary pause of shock, I laughed at him, nodding my head. “Sounds like it.”

He chuckled, taking another bite of his bread. “I even got my princess at the end.”

He smirked at that, and I thought it looked so oddly wonderful coming from him. He was so sweet, but it still fit his face so well. It was lovely, really.

All I could do was give him a small laugh and a smile, while I finished up the rest of my soup. Miraculously, Niall finished before I did and sat looking at me with his waiting eyes.

When I finished, he promptly took the bowl from my hand and tossed it into the trash can. His right hand reached out for mine, and he pulled me from my seat. He had a bright smile on his face and gently dragged me towards the door.

“Where are we going?” I asked, more confused than anything else.

He shrugged, as he pursed his lips. “You’ll see. Just be happy you’ve got a full stomach.”

I laughed and followed him happily out the door, leaving Taylor behind. It was only when I remembered that she was back on the bed that my moon dampened. It wasn’t because of her or anything she had done; it was because she served as a painful reminder of how bad things could get.

Something about Taylor had changed somehow in the last day, but I couldn’t forget how upset she’d been the day before, and the last thing I wanted was to feel that way because of Niall.

It was dangerous following him out onto that elevator and off into the unknown. I was hesitant. More than hesitant, really. I was anxious, afraid, and worried all at once.

Sensing this, Niall looked down at me and smiled. “Just trust me.”

And so I did.
