Fight the Tears With Pretty Smiles and Lies
Fake Smile
A few more weeks went by, things getting better each day. I spent a lot of time at the Way's house, helping Gerard through this. One weekend, when my mom wanted to actually spend time with me, I called to check up on Gerard. Mikey answered the phone.
"Hello?" said Mikey.
"Mikey?" I said. "It's Allie."
"Oh," he said. "Hey Allie. What's up?"
"Not much," I said. "Just checking up on Gerard. Is he doing good?"
"Uh, yeah," said Mikey.
"Can I talk to him?" I asked. Something in Mikey's voice had gotten me worried.
"Sure, um," he said. "Just a minute."
I waited patiently when finally Gerard got on the phone.
"Gerard," I said. "Is that you?"
"Yeah," said Gerard, laughing a little.
"How are you doing?" I asked.
"Excellent," Gerard said, laughing slightly.
"What's so funny?" I asked.
"I have no idea," Gerard said, laughing more.
"Gerard," I said. "I want you to tell me the truth. Are you high right now?"
"I might be," Gerard said sheepishly.
"I can't believe you," I said, getting angry. "You promised."
"I'm sorry," he said. "But it was just so hard."
"Whatever Gerard," I said. "You know, all I wanted was for you to be completely sober and you can't do that for me. I would do anything for you."
"I know," said Gerard. "Can't we talk about this face to face though?"
I sighed.
"I'll come over tomorrow," I said. "And you better be sober."
I hung up the phone and sighed in aggravation. I can't believe he did this. Apparantly drugs are more important to him than me. I turned around just as my mom walked into the room.
"Is everything ok?" she asked when she saw my face.
"Yeah," I lied, forcing a fake smile.
"Ok, then," she said, smiling back. "Let's go."
