My Captain

The Lunch

I woke early the next morning.
Adjusting to country life was not easy.
After 29 years of living in a large town, living in a small village, in the middle of nowhere was slowly killing me.
I didn’t even know there was a 5.30am in the morning, I said to myself, sounding really sarcastic.
“Dawn” my father called, “its 5.30 get up now”.
“If you want to go out today, you need to get your chores done first”
As I dressed, I thought about Captain Nicholls.
There weren’t men like him in Birmingham.
So charming and sweet, manners are hard to come by, I thought.
A few hours later I was heading back up the stairs to get ready.
WOW this morning has gone quick, I thought as I changed out of my green trousers and jacket.
As I brushed my hair in front of the mirror, I heard a knock on the front door.
“Hello Mr Faulks, I’m Captain Nicholls”.
OH NO He’s early.
I tided my hair loosely back, and put my blue dress on; it matches his eyes I giggled to myself. I put on my blue matching coat and gloves and headed down stairs.
Captain Nicholls was sat in the kitchen with my father when I came down stairs.
Captain Nicholls stood as I entered the kitchen.
“Good Morning Miss Faulks”
“Good Morning Captain Nicholls”
“Are you ready to go?”
“Yes”
My father gave me an approving smile as we headed out the front door.
“You look very beautiful this Morning Miss Faulks”
“Thank You Captain Nicholls, and please call me Dawn, I will never get used to being called Miss Faulks”
“Of course, Dawn”
His voice was like honey on a warm day, just the sound warmed me right through.
“So where are we walking to?” I asked
“The Village, I would like to take you for lunch.”
“I would like that very much” I said smiling.
“Are you ready for Christmas?” I asked as we walked down the road.
“Nearly ready, I have no family to speak of, so I will be spending it on base.”
“That’s so sad Captain Nicholls”
“Please Dawn, call me James”
“You will have to spend Christmas with us James” I said with a tear in my eye,
“I hate people being alone at this time of year. It’s a time for togetherness”.
“Would your father mind?”
“I doubt it; he hasn’t shown much interest this year because of my Mother’s passing”.
“I would love to join you”.
“It’s a date then”, I said laughing.
“It sure is”, he replied looking deep into my eyes.
WOW those eyes are intense as well as sensual I thought.
We had stopped at the local village pub for lunch.
I found us a table as James ordered drinks and our meals.
We sat in silence for a few minutes.
“It’s Christmas Eve tomorrow, any plans?”
Smiling he answered.
“Got drill practice in the morning. It’s difficult riding a horse in this weather”.
“I’ve never ridden”, I replied.
“I will teach you if you would like me to”
“I‘d like that very much”.
We sat in more silence while we eat our meal.
“This beef and ale pie is wonderful” James said with a glint in his eye.
“The roast beef is good also” I said.
Half an hour later we left the pub.
“Did you see that elder lady watching us?” James asked.
“No” I replied.
“She never stopped looking at us”
“I’m sure it was nothing James, I mean you do look very dashing in that uniform”
Blushing he said “thank you, wait till you see me in my blue drill one”.
Laughing I put my arm through his. I snuggled up to his arm as we walked back up the road.
Time passed so fast, before I knew it, we were at my front door.
“Thank you for lunch” I said.
“Your very welcome”, James said as he removed his cap and placed a soft, warm kiss on my cheek.
“See you tomorrow night James”, I said as I closed the door.

A few hours later there was a knock on the door.
Everybody had gone to sleep; I was the only one awake, writing about my lunch date in my diary.
I opened the door in my nightie, to find James stood there.
“I’m so sorry Dawn. I know it’s late, but I have to do this. I haven’t thought of anything else for hours”.
“Do what?” I asked completely confused.
“This” he answered.
Placing his fingers under my chin, he raised my head and placed the most, sweetest kiss on my lips.
I felt my heart skip a beat, as he pulled me in his arms and deepened the kiss.
Butterflies fluttered in my tummy as I kissed him back.
I ran my fingers through his blond hair.
As we parted, I kept my eyes closed for a few seconds longer. Keeping hold of every last second of the kiss.
“Open your eyes”, he said softly
As I opened my eyes, he placed his forehead onto mine.
Looking into my eyes he said, “I love you Dawn.”
“I love you to James”, I said with a smile.
