I May Pour Spirits in Thine Ear

The boy’s jet dark hair glided in the wind over the running water, metres below. Scared, but not rocked to the core he was. Peeping over the bridge’s ledge were the tips of his dark shoes, his hand holding the rail.

‘Step off already. What are you waiting for?’ the boy behind him encouraged him.

‘Nothing,’ the boy muttered through deeply cracked lips.

The world around them was silenced by the rushing and gushing of clashing waters. The traffic was blocked out by the shrub surrounding the park they were occupying. This was his escape; where he could be alone; where he could leave.

‘Don’t push me James’ he retorted to the boy behind him, stepping back to lower his face closer to the water. He wanted to feel its spray over his skin but it was too far below.

‘I’m pushing you towards what you want. Don’t fuss with me because of that.’

He had contemplated this at length. They’d discussed what he wanted to do more times than he could count.

‘Don’t bother then. It’s not working. You are becoming another reason I don’t want this anymore.’
