I'll Carry You Home Tonight

Chapter 2

“keep your head down”

I thought to myself walking through the packed halls at change of lesson, I gripped the neck of my guitar for dear life the strings leaving little red marks across my palm.

I strategically dodged people and eye contact until I reached the safe haven of the music room where Nate was already sat down reading from some sheet music. He looked up and I smiled at him taking my seat at the desk next to him, he leant over and kissed my cheek before smiling

“Hello lover”

He then burst in to laughter as my face burned red. Nate had been my closest friend for as long as I could remember but he was irritating and camp and it wasn’t one of his most endearing features. As he leaned over to squeeze my thigh I already began to wish that the lesson was over.

Nates head dropped in to his hands and he began to rub his eyes, I already noticed his skin was pasty and didn’t need to ask if he had been drinking I already knew the answer. I looked over at him

“you ready to rehearse?”

He groaned and stood up

“come on then”

He took a slow walk to the back of the room and in to the small makeshift recording room that conjoined our music room and the dance studio next door. I sat down and looked out of the tinted window in to the dance class room. The girls where performing lazily in unison all perfectly in sync with each other they were good but one girl caught my eye, stood at the back of the group with her long dark hair tied back her big brown eyes fixated to the front her movements where fluid, her body was sleek and she moved with precision. Something was drawing me towards her I felt as though I needed to know more about her.

Nate began to sing snapping me back to reality as I tried to keep up with the chords my mind was still wondering about the angelic image that had just danced before me. Who was she what was her name? these questions carried me through to the end of the lesson.

I grabbed my guitar and theory book and walked briskly down the hallway towards the dance studio and waited outside trying not to look too weird. A bustling group of girls all chatting and giggling excitedly came flooding through the doors she wasn’t there I waited for a few more minutes and she came out alone tears streaming down her face. I stepped forward nervously and put my hand on her cold skinny arm

“Are you okay?”

She jumped and looked at me confused before sniffling

“Never better”

She began to walk away I managed to walk beside her

“I know im a stranger but you can talk to me I always find it easier to talk to strangers”

She sighed

“I’m going out for a smoke”

I followed her out to the “smoker’s area”

She looked over at me

“Determined little fuck aren’t you”

I laughed and nodded

“Actually my name is jack”

She smiled and introduced herself as Amber.

As we got to the smokers area she began to frisk herself for a lighter, I reached in to my pocket and handed her one

“You don’t look like the smoking type”

“I don’t it’s a conversation starter though”

She laughed louder this time

“You’re weird I like you”

I felt myself blush violently and began to chew my cheek in an awkward geeky silence; she looked down at my guitar

“So I assume you’re a musician?”

“Yeah been playing since I was six”

I smiled proudly she smiled back leaned on the wall next to me and rested her head on my shoulder the butterflies in my stomach where going mad I didn’t want this to happen I just wanted to talk to her now other feelings where taking over.

I attempted to talk myself down in my head

“this is ridiculous you didn’t even know she had existed before now she’s just an acquaintance”

She looked up at me and exhaled a long stream of smoke coming out from between her pink lips.
She lifted her head

“so jack” she punched my arm playfully “what sorta music do you like?”

My mind began to race as I thought of what wouldn’t make me a geek or make her think little of me

“Erm…indie I guess maybe some alternative? Maybe?”

“High five we have a cool music taste”

She held her hand out waiting for me to slap it I nervously tapped her palm with mine she laughed

“What about movies?”

“Rocky horror and maybe a decent classic slasher”

She laughed and held her hand up again

“Do you know what Jacky boy I think we may have just started a lifelong friendship”

I smiled at her
