Rose Garden

And the camera flashes make it look like a dream...

Tyler laced up his last skate, almost ready for the game to begin. Before warm-ups, Tyler did something he only did occasionally before a game. He took out his iPhone and headphones, ready for some music to help him get in the zone. Pressing shuffle, he waited for the rap that was surely about to start playing in his ears. But instead, a very female voice began instead.

One of his sisters must have thought it would be funny to put Andrea’s music on his playlist. Oh wait… he had.

Instead of pressing skip or finding a different song, Tyler found himself looking off into space, listening. He couldn’t help but recall the good times they had shared…

*~*~*~*~*~*

They spent weeks getting to know each other with no official title. Sure, there were dates in the evenings when he didn’t have games and she wasn’t working at the station and lazy afternoons spent lounging around, talking.

Over the course of those three weeks, they learned quite a lot about each other. Tyler learned about her job working at the iTunes sponsored station that catered to the large English speaking population that attended university in Biel and her dreams of the music industry. She told him about cancer, about her sister, about her battle with anorexia and how a bad break up had caused it. He listened, not talking a lot.

Andrea did her share of listening too. She listened to him recount lifting the Cup for the first time and scoring his first goal. Andrea laughed at stories about his siblings before sharing her own about her older brothers. But for the most part, they talked about silly things.

She taught him some German and he taught her how ignore school work. Sometimes, Andrea would bring out her two guitars and they would fiddle around on them for a while, just having a laugh. Other days, they sat in the kitchen, still talking, as Andrea attempted to teach him to cook something other than pasta and toast.

“Don’t let it burn!” she scolded him as he turned the piece of fish in the pan.

“Chill, chill, chill,” he waved his hand.

Letting him take the reins on dinner, Andrea picked up her iPhone and checked her Twitter feed.

“Have I told you that my followers have all wanted to know who this ‘guy’ was that I’ve been spending so much time with?” she asked scrolling down. “Because they have.”

“Oh really?” Tyler took the fish off the pan, placing it on a plate, and turned the stove down before coming to stand behind her. His arms on either side of her as his palms rested on the table and she couldn’t help but shiver a little as his warm breath hit her cold skin.

She was only human, after all. A woman, in fact, who was not immune to the handsome man who had somehow decided he liked being around her.

“Mine have been asking too,” he said, showing her his own feed.

It had been an unspoken game between the two. They would tweet silly messages about each other without mentioning the other person and pictures that only showed someone from behind or a goofy picture of their feet, never showing their faces. It was a fun game that drove both their fans crazy making guesses.

Tyler certainly wanted to tell everyone that the girl he was so into was, but he had this sinking feeling that Andrea wouldn’t want to let everyone in just yet. Hell, the only people she had told were Taylor, her brothers, and a few friends from university. Tyler had clued in his current teammates and a few from Boston along with his sisters. But for some reason, he had a sudden surge of courage. Maybe it was the winning goal he had scored the night before or maybe it was the confidence that he had in his abilities to make her fall in love with him, but Tyler picked up his phone, turned on the camera, and did something…rash.

He kissed her. On the lips. Without saying anything.

Tyler snapped the picture and before Andrea could protest, he uploaded it to Twitter with a simple message.

‘@tylerseguin92- Hi, beautiful @AndreaDarlingMusic.’

Turning back to the girl sitting next to him, he saw she still wore the shocked expression she’d had on just after he had kissed her.

“Uh, s-sorry?”

Andrea shook her head fervently, almost making herself dizzy, before grabbing her own phone and opening up her camera. Leaning in to Tyler she smiled.

“Don’t be,” and her lips connected with his as she snapped her own picture.
