Draco Malfoy's Dirty Little Secret

Chapter 21

I was so happy when my package finally arrived on time. I thought that mum had forgotten about me and that I would have to attend the party in jeans and a nice blouse, but she pulled through like she always did. I thought that she would’ve been so busy with the baby, but apparently I was wrong. I had been in the Great Hall for lunch and my mum’s owl dropped off the package and the letter. I was so excited to see which one of my many dresses that she had pulled out of my closet, but that giddiness soon faded as I walked out of the Great Hall and into someone.

“I’m sorry,” his voice filled my ears as soon as I looked into his eyes.

I lost my smile. “Good to know,” I nodded as I turned to walk away.

“Courtney,” he called after me, so I turned to see what he wanted. “Are you really going with Potter to that party tonight?”

He sounded jealous, so it had worked. “I don’t see how it’s any business of yours, but,” I added to see how he would react, “yes. I am.”

“Why?” he looked into my eyes, which made me catch my breath.

“If someone would just be real with me for just five minutes, I might be attending this party with him. So, I’m going with Harry instead. He’s been nicer to me than some people have been these past few weeks,” I said, letting my anger out and wanting my words to sting.

It looked like I had succeeded because he looked down at the stone floor. “I’m sorry. For everything. Hopefully in time, I’ll be able to tell you what’s going on, but until then , just know that-“

“I don’t need to know anything, especially if it’s coming from you. If you’re sure you’re sorry, then come and find me when you feel like it. Isn’t that what you said you’d do anyway?” I yelled, turning on my heel and leaving the entrance hall.

I couldn’t stand there and talk to him. I was too angry to even listen to what he wanted to tell me, which he was probably going to tell me that he loved me. I highly doubt that. He’s just playing me like he did to every other girl he’s ever gone out with. Pansy is just one of them that he happens to go back out with every year. So far, I haven’t heard if they’ve tried it out this year. I bet it was because I was the one in his sights for the first term. Lucky me, right?

“Court?” Kamrynn called me from her room. “What’s wrong? Why are you stomping so loudly?”

I sighed. “Is it that obvious?”

She nodded. “It really is. Hey, how about we get ready together? For the party? Be here at five,”
and with that, she closed the door behind her. Apparently, she knew that I would say yes anyway. I needed to get the newest Draco news off my chest. It felt so good to do it a couple of weeks ago.

I opened the door to my dorm and slammed down onto my bed. Lucky me, Lavender was also in the room, curling her hair with magic. I rolled my eyes and laid back on my bed, sweat starting to roll down my face.

“Court? What’s wrong BFF?” she asked and I felt my bed sink down with her weight as well.

I sighed and sat up on my elbows. “Will you just leave me alone? That’s what I want. Can’t you go down to Romilda’s dorm and gossip like you usually do with her?”

“And leave my BFF to deal with a problem on her own after she helped me get together with my Won-Won?” she smiled and tapped my nose with the tip of her finger. “You’re so silly!”

I smacked her hand out of my face. I was finally done with her crap. It was time to lay down some ground rules. “Listen, Lavender. You and I are not BFF’s and never were. I didn’t help you get with Ron-“ I paused, actually I did by trying to warn him and he took it as I was trying to get them together and took up on it. “Okay, I did help you get with Ron, but that was by accident. I didn’t even mean it. He even hits on other girls because he’s so bored with you. He should be with Kamrynn like I was trying to do in the first place, but no. You had to get in the way with your so called ‘feelings’. Anyway, back on topic, here’s some rules. You don’t talk to me, and I won’t talk to you. We are not BFF’s. We hate each other, okay?”

I couldn’t help but laugh as her mouth hung open in utter surprise. She totally looked like she was ‘catching flies’ as Harry would say. She gathered her things that she was using to get ready and ran out of the room. I slammed the door behind her, happy for the peace and quiet. I smiled to myself as I pulled out my letter that mum had written to me.

Hey Sweetie,

It’s good to hear from you! I’m so glad that you are having such a great time this year. You’ll be sure to tell me all about at Christmas, right? I know that you said in your last letter that you would be spending the first week of the holidays at your dad’s, and well, so won’t I. Remus and I are split up and currently going through a divorce. I know, I feel so bad telling you this by letter, but I’ll fill you in on all the details when you get here. I moved all your stuff back into your old room, but you can organize it when you get back. Your little sister is doing just fine. Her name is Adeline, and I know that you’ll just love her! Well, have fun at your party, and I’ll be sure to see you this weekend. I’m sure that I’ll be seeing Draco as well since you two have school work to catch up on. I love you and miss you so much!

Love,

Mum

Wow. The letter was a total shock to me. What happened between Lupin and mum? They seemed so happy and in love just right before term. My biggest question was why she was at dad’s? That just seemed so unpredictable. They really hadn’t been the greatest towards each other since their own divorce. I hoped that she would fill me in on everything and not leave anything out. I was missing so much just being at school. Everything just seemed to go on without me, and that really sucked. I pushed that out of my head and tore open the package she had sent me, which turned out to be my clingy, red-velvet dress that would fit the whole Christmas theme. It was so beautiful and went all the way down to my feet. The back was cut out to my waist, but the front wasn’t cut too low in front. She also sent my red pumps with them. At least I would look good for the party and for Harry.

“I have so much to tell you!” Kam squealed when I got to her dorm at five. “You will not believe that my dad got me a really pretty dress! He told me that it was because he won’t be able to spend Christmas with me, which isn’t out the unusual.”

Amos, Kam’s dad, hadn’t spent a major holiday with her since fourth year when Cedric was…you know. I could tell that it hurt her so much that her dad pushed her away. It was like she wasn’t as important as her older brother, that’s an exact quote from her in our fifth year. I felt bad for her, but it wasn’t like my dad wanted me after his and mum’s divorce when I was twelve. He didn’t speak to me until last year, and then he left me at his house alone. I hate going over there, but if mum was there, it wouldn’t be all that bad.

“So,” she said, pulling out a short hot pink dress. “This is it. What do you think? I think Blaise will absolutely love it, don’t you? I mean- what – Court?”

I had sunk onto her bed and started crying when she had mentioned Blaise. It wasn’t the fact that she was going with him, that’s just fine. No, she got to go to the party with someone that she wanted to be there with. I was stuck going with a guy that I was pretty sure that had a crush on me and was just trying to get together with me. Not to mention he wasn’t all that attractive, and the glasses weren’t helping him out all that much either.

“Court, is this about Draco? What did he do now?” she said, sitting next to me.

I shook my head and wiped my eyes. “It’s not what he’s done. It’s what I’ve done. I’ve pushed him away, Kam, and I don’t think I’ll ever get him back. The only thing I was doing was standing up for myself, but maybe there’s a –a -a reason why he wasn’t telling me what’s going on. It has to be a good reason, Kam. It just has to be.”

She wrapped her arms around me and I leaned into her. “I’m sure there’s a reason. He loves you. You can tell by the way he looks at you. You will never lose him. You never have, and you never will. Don’t you even think for a moment that you and he are not meant to be just because a bump in the road has come along? You are going to marry that boy one day. I believe that whole heartedly. So, don’t worry,” She said, pulling away from me. “Come on. We’re going to make you look amazing and perhaps you’ll pass him in the hall or something. We’ll make him one jealous son - of- a bitch.”

I smiled and wiped my eyes once more before she grabbed her wand and started my make-over. When I was finished doing her make-up, we walked down the stairs into the common room where Harry and Ron were waiting. Kam kissed me on the cheek before running off to meet her date. I noticed that Ron was watching her the whole way out. Odd.

“You look beautiful,” Harry said kissing my cheek.

“Oh, yeah. She looks plenty beautiful. She must be so happy that I’m currently in a fight with my girlfriend all because of the blow up they had. Isn’t that right, Flint? You’re jealousy finally got the best of you, didn’t it? And,” he stood, approaching us. “You disguised it as trying to get your best mate together with me, didn’t you?”

“What?!” I yelled, which caused Harry to grab my by my waist but I shoved him off. “I am not jealous, and I never will be. You and I will never, ever happen. Didn’t we do this already? I could’ve sworn that you understood this last time.”

“Well, Lavender set things straight. She said you weren’t supportive of us at all, and I know that for a fact. You tried to tell me at first, and I know that-“

“Do you know how stupid you sound right now?” I asked, getting right up in his face.

“Court, maybe we should-“ Harry tried to intervene, but I wouldn’t have that.

“Maybe you should but out, Twiggy,” I said and turned back to Ron. “I don’t have feelings for you. Kamrynn did, but I’m not so sure now. Blaise seems to be good for her, and now, I’m not too sure that you’re good for her.”

“I would never date, Kamrynn. She’s too ugly to-“

I didn’t let him finish because I punched him right in the nose. That’s when Harry grabbed me by the waist once more and pulled me out of the common room. I was so angry that I paced in front of the Fat Lady to calm down. It only took a few moments to do it though.

“Maybe I should’ve asked Luna. At least it would’ve been less violent,” Harry laughed. “What’s gotten into you?”

“He called Kam ugly-“

He nodded. “I know that, but he didn’t mean it. He was just angry with you and trying to anger you. Besides, he had a few sips of firewhiskey that he snuck from the Hog’s Head the last trip. He’ll be back to normal tomorrow. So, how about we go have some fun?”

I smiled and nodded. Hey, Harry did have a way of making you feel better. It was always great. We made it to the party a little late, but Slughorn wasn’t angry. Harry was his golden boy, after all. We had loads of fun, dancing and drinking punch, which was provided to us by Neville. It was so sad that he couldn’t be there unless he served. I didn’t have time to say so either because I was then pulled away. When I turned, I expected to see Harry, but that was not the case.

“Harry,” I said, spinning around.

“No, not Harry,” said Colin Creevy, who I never, ever talk to.

I smiled though. “Hey, I hope you’re having fun,” I said before turning away.

“Where do you think you’re going? You’re not going to let a guy tell you you’re pretty when he comes over. Talk about a snob,” he laughed as he grabbed my wrist. “You’re pretty, beautiful in fact.”

“Thanks, Colin,” I eyed him oddly. It was so out of character for him. “Now, I’m going to go back to my date, if you don’t mind.”

“I do mind,” his grip, tightening on my wrist. “You shouldn’t be here with Potter. He doesn’t even deserve to be in your presence.”

“Uh,” I wasn’t sure exactly what was going on. “And you do?”

He shook his head. “If only you knew,” he smirked, a very un-Colin like smirk.”

“What are you talking about? You’re half the size I am, kiddo,” I smirked back, looking down at him. “A little shrimp like you is not going to scare me into being your girlfriend. You are so full of it, and way out of character right-“

“Maybe nobody is exactly who you think they are,” he whispered before letting me go and heading for Slughorn’s office.
