Bad Joke

He laughed, his eyes crinkled, and he looked at her with that laugh and she had to laugh too. She liked hearing him laugh and she liked the way she laughed with him. Their laughter died down and he just looked at her.

“You hated that joke. I know you did.”

“I did, it was terrible, but it made you laugh. I think,” she paused and considered the words for a moment. “I think that I’m happy when you’re happy. Making you laugh makes me laugh.” She said and he suddenly became very still and very quiet and they sat there simply staring at each other.

“I think you just said you loved me.”

“You think so?”

“I think that I would tell every single awful joke that ever existed to keep that smile on your face.”

“Maybe you shouldn’t.”

“I love you.” He said and in that moment she knew she would laugh at every single awful joke and stand-up comedy act as long as it made him smile too.

“I love you too.”
