My W Unit

That is Illegal

I returned a little while later with Killian right beside me. The sea of wolves parted as we made our way back to the front. Once I settled in a spot, the pack wrapped itself around me. "What'd I miss?" I asked Rory without looking at the people on the screen.
"We think there was a miss understanding with Dr. Sullivan." He replied back.
I sighed, "Awesome."
"I'll be right back." Calum said as he disappeared from the screen.
"How's the hunt for us going?" I asked finally stepping out of my protective cocoon.
"The government is frustrated. They had hope in the beginning because of Myrra's tracking devices, but when they went to ping you they couldn't." Chezza replied.
"I disabled her tracking system."
"That's putting it mildly." Trina snorted. Chezza tilted her head in question. "We may or may not have played some baseball with them."
Chezza couldn't help but laugh, "Your insane."
"Traversing space does that to you." I shrugged with a grin. Calum returned with a panicked expression. "What's wrong?"
"I don't know how to tell you, but you are in more trouble than we initially thought." There was little blood left in his face.
"What's wrong?" Zane squared himself.
"I was just informed that the Council doesn't plan on only arresting you. You are to be executed via fast trial."
"Fast trial?" Chezza asked.
"It means the moment they are arrested, they will be triad within a day. They won't have time to find evidence to defend themselves."
"That is unjust!" Kat cried.
I thought back to what Sebastian said about wolves and wars. "We're scapegoats." Everyone looked at me confused. "Back when we were hostage, Sebastian told me the history of the Tunglþræll bloodline. He said that after every war that wolves fought in, the government finds a select group of wolves and uses them as scapegoats to show the power they have over wolves. They enforce fear so wolves won't rise up and challenge the them. And this time around they were handed an opportunity to show power by not only executing a pack, but by getting a pain in the ass that held power over them. I'm sorry." I whispered the latter. Some of the wolves around me whimpered and stepped closer.
"You have to run." Josiah said. "Or at least run until you have evidence you can present."
"Even if they do collect enough, do you really think the jury will care?" Calum said. He didn't say it in a cruel manner, but he had a point.
"You could ensure that there are some unbiased jurors." Josiah offered.
"That is illegal."
"So is a fast trial where a pack can't defend themselves properly."
"I can see what I can do, but that is not my department." Calum conceded.
"I'll talk to Andy and see what he can do. For now, I agree with Alpha Bonebreaker and think you should run until you can defend yourselves."
"We could ask around, but hiding a pack is difficult. We can't split up like a human unit could, the pack needs to stay close to the Alpha." Zane informed.
"We are a small enough pack that we could spread out a bit. Break up into two group, half with you and half with me." Killian offered as a plan. "We'd have to find a way to meet regularly because I'm only a Beta, but it's worth a shot."
Zane nodded, "We'll keep that as a thought, but we still have the problem of Myrra. We can't stay with her because she's pretty obvious, but we can't abandon her either."
"She's a ship." Calum said.
"She's a Phoenix and thus alive."
"They had such promise for your unit Alpha Zane." Josiah whistled.
"Yeah, but we've screwed that up." I commented. "Josiah, do you know anywhere we could stay for a little while?"
"No, I am sorry. I would offer here, but we are surely going to be questioned and I do not want to put my pack in danger."
"We understand, Alpha Josiah. We are going to have to go on an outer ring planet." Zane said. "I fear this is not far enough out."
"We could try Kyle and Sid. See if they know anywhere we could go." I suggested.
"Try them. The worst they could say is no."
I walked over to the computer and inputted the proper information and waited for him to answer. We continued discussing our predicament until Kyle answered my call. "Hello Wolf Eyes." He greeted with a smile.
"Hey Kyle, Sid." I tried to smile.
"So I hear you've got a bounty on your head."
"That's why I contacted you. The unit and I are planning to say hidden from the government until we collect enough evidence to prove we are innocent, however we need a place to hide. Do you know anywhere we could go where we can hide as a pack but possibly in separate housing units or something?" Kyle and Sid's faces changed into ones of concentration. "You don't have to answer right away. When you think of a place you can contact me on this channel."
"Before we agree to helping you, we need to know why you are wanted." Sid looked me square in the eye.
It was Zane who answered, "Rai is wanted for treason and in turn the pack is wanted as accomplices."
"What was the treason?"
I looked down as Zane replied, "She 'told' us what happened to her brother which she agreed not to talk about."
"The agreement was, I stay quiet and they would follow my terms." I inserted.
"However, she told us nothing and now they want to arrest us and give us a fast trial."
"Meaning they won't give you time to defend yourself. What is your punishment?" Kyle spoke this time.
"Execution for my pack and we are unsure about Rai. Most likely the same."
Sid and Kyle's eyes widened, "Are you sure that is what to be?" Everyone grimly nodded. Kyle looked to Sid and then said, "You could come here. This place is crowded with wolves and many come and go all the time, no one would notice seven new wolves and a human."
"Although, "Sid added, "If we are to do this right, Rai would have to be thought of as a wolf. This community is wolf only and if we bring in a human, the human units will start poking."
"Couldn't they just say Rai is the mate to one of them?" Josiah asked.
"Technically they could, but again there would be an investigation to make sure this is so. It would be suspicious since wolf and human mate pairs are so rare."
"So you think she could pull off being a wolf better than a mated human?" Josiah quirked an eyebrow.
"Possibly, she does give off a wolf air about her."
"Wolf mentality?"
"Exactly."
"The hardest part I think will be hiding them." Kyle inserted as he stared at our little pack. "They stand out, especially Rai because of her eyes. But on top of that, the Aldwin Pack is well known and will easily be picked out at the check point."
"We can help them with some of the changes, but I believe you do have some clothes other than military attire right?" Josiah asked as he looked at Zane.
"Yes, we do have casual clothes, even formal attire." He replied wryly. Josiah couldn't help but laugh.
"Better undust them then, because you will have to get use to wearing them once again." Unfazed by Zane.
"Rai?" Chezza spoke quietly over Josiah, Zane, Killian, Sid, Kyle, and Calum.
I shifted my eyes to her, "Yes?"
"May I speak privately to you for a moment?" I nodded, disconnected my tablet and opened a new window for her. I slipped the jack of my headpiece into it so only I could hear my friend. "Your account has been frozen. I'm assuming the rest of the pack's has too but what I'm more concern with is our projects. We have quite a few private investors, but your account is basically our go to if we are shy some credits. Our venture is going to have to cut back on some things of we want to continue while you are on the run."
"How many are we working on at the moment?"
"Two, we are about to start a third."
"Hold off on the third until at least one of the others is finished so we can pay for everything. Start working on one thing at a time, starting a second one when the first is nearly finished."
"Okay."
"How is it going?"
"Excellent. Besides some holdups every so often, things tend to go smoothly and the units love the new barracks."
"I'm glad." I gave a genuine smile, wishing to see some of the new places I helped create.
"A smile suits you Rai-Rai."
"It's hard..."
"What's really bothering you? Is it only Jay or is there more to it?"
I walked out of the room to have a little more privacy with Chezza. "There's more. You know about me being kidnapped?" She nodded. "Well, that was terrible in and of itself. It started off like any other way to gain information. Strapped to a chair, questioned, some violence, the usual. However, Sebastian completed his machine that enabled the ability to see memories. I was able to hold my own, but he deprived me of REM and fed us very little; just enough to keep us from dying. Over the course of who knows how long, he eventually was able to see more and for longer periods of time. By the end, he was able to resurface Jay's death and once I start thinking about it, I can't stop. Well, we got rescued... as we left the compound-" I paused, I knew I had to say it quickly before one of my packmates came to see what was wrong. "Marco wasn't feeling well. It started off with just a cough, but gradually got worse. He attacked Killian and me. I was in Killian's arms so he couldn't do anything... I shot him. He died..." My face went blank as I stared at the wall before me.
"Rai?" Chezza's voice held worry, but I didn't hear it. "RAI!"
Her voice startled me out of my trance, "Sorry."
"Does this happen a lot?"
"On occasion."
"Rai." I heard pain in her voice.
"Don't, Chez. Please just don't."
