Snowed In

Elsie

Elsie was away from the group as she leaned against the wall. A candle, found in one of the fancier restaurants of the resort, was lit as an opened book lay in her lap. Mostly everyone was sleeping, but Elsie couldn't help but still feel as if they were going to be there forever. She always had these silly fears and stressed over things way too much.

She tried to calm herself with one of the spare books she kept in the store she and Louis worked in. Her eyes slowly ran over the words, and her fingers gently caressed the page before she flipped it. Elsie was gentle with books like she was with everything else she did because she felt as if books were people too. She was always deeply entranced by books, and she never seemed to notice her surroundings. It wasn't until a soft tap on the shoulder pulled her away from the words on the page.

Her blue eyes met with beautiful brown, and her breath got caught in her throat as she realized who it was. "Zayn," his name fell from her lips in a breath, and her eyes widened just a bit wider at the sight up him. His hair was in a mess, and she assumed it was from sleeping on it. Elsie always thought he was much handsomer when his hair was a mess, and he had a bit of facial hair on his face. It was one of those things she never told him.

He offered up a small smile, and Elsie couldn't help but dart her eyes over to the sleeping figure with chestnut hair. They had scouted out in two rooms that had the doors connecting. Louis was first to grab the bed for the night, and Elsie was supposed to be sharing with him. She just couldn't sleep.

"Can't sleep?" he asked with the raise of an eyebrow. She slowly nodded. She couldn't seem to get words out as she remembered how badly their relationship had ended.

She had had a pretty bad day that day after a customer had yelled at her for not having a product in stock. It had been a long and tedious last hour as she tried to calm the customer and tell him that it would be in the next day. After she got off work, Zayn and she went out to dinner. At the beginning of their relationship, it had been full of fun, and they were always talking and having a great time. It soon turned into something bad. Along with that, Zayn was easily annoyed at that time, and she couldn't understand why, but he always seemed to pick on every little thing she did. It was something he was doing at dinner, and she just couldn't handle it anymore. The breakup was messy, and it ended up with her being a ball of sadness and tears.

"I'm sorry," he murmured as he leaned back against the wall himself. The glow of the candle cast a soft orange gone to his skin, and she couldn't help but just stare. He still looked as handsome as ever, and the light seemed to heighten the best of his features. His dark hair fell into his eyes as he glanced over at her, peeking through his hair. "During our relationship," he took in a soft breath as he licked his lips, "I was horrible to you." He looked incredibly sorry, and he seemed as if he had been holding this in for awhile.

She went to open her mouth to say something, but he quickly hurried, "I had a lot on my plate then, and I felt as if you thought I wasn't good enough for you, which was silly. You always think the best of people. It was one of the many things that made me fall in love with you." A blush heated up her cheeks as she listened to him say how he was in love with her. At that time, she was in love with him too, but she no longer was.

Zayn still had that affect on her that made her blush and have her hands shaky and sweaty, and she wished he didn't. She was with Louis now, and she loved him. "I really did love you, and I still do," he whispered as he turned to look at her. His eyes were filled with warmth and love, and she took in a shaky breath. He leaned forward, and she quickly moved away because she couldn't allow him to kiss her. She couldn't.

"Zayn," she murmured as she turned her head away, and his lips gently touched her cheek. "We can't."

"I know," he muttered softly against her cheek before be pulled away, and she could hear the disappointment that threaded his voice. She hoped that no one was awake to witness this incident because she didn't need Louis thinking she was cheating on him. She didn’t want that because she really did love Louis.

She went to say something else when a groggy voice interrupted her. "Elsie?" she turned her head quickly to look at the sleeping figure on the bed who was slowly sitting up.

"Sorry," she whispered gently to Zayn before she blew out the candle. "I'm here, Louis," she said softly as she climbed onto the bed. "I couldn't sleep, so I was reading." Louis hummed a response as he pulled the covers over them and pulled her close into his warmth. In the darkness of the room, she could still see Zayn's brown eyes through it. Her heart broke simply at the look of hurt in his eyes, and she knew that a small part of her was still in love with him.
