Finding Tomorrow

One

"Ainsley?"

The world trembled, maybe even more than my lips were as I continued to gaze straight ahead. I searched his eyes, scrutinized his laugh lines, dared to seek out some flaw that would show me that man standing in front of me was anyone but my mate.

But there was no flaw to be found. It was him. Or just maybe I was beginning to hallucinate. Maybe I was growing to desperate to have somebody. The odds of me having a mate was against me. Not to mention that the man standing before me was definitely a vampire.

I could tell by the way his head was cocked to the side; the way his eyes kept wandering back to my neck, covered by the collar of my shirt. I clutched my hands together, eyes wide in fear of not knowing how to react. Even after all the training Sam put into us, I wasn't prepared for this. I don't think anyone could have expected this.

Suddenly, my vision was clouded with tears. My heart was filling with impossible doubt. This couldn't be my mate. My mate wasn't a vampire. It couldn't be. It's impossible.

I couldn't help but stumble forward, feeling the strong tug of want radiating from him. My breathing was growing ragged with every step I took. I reached my hand out, almost grazin-

"What are you doing?" Paul hissed, shooting me a warning glance. He then picked me up, his eyes skimming my facial expression.

"P-Paul," I managed to stammer, trying to carefully keep my voice neutral as I attempted to reassure him. "I was okay. Did you-"

"Don't." he growled.

I took a deep breath and forced the words form my lips. Paul had to understand, didn't he? He was a wolf. He had to know how it felt for Sam and Emily to unite; for Quil and Claire to meet; for Jared and Kim to find each other. He had to understand.

Didn't he?

"W-what if I don't want to?"

Why am I stuttering? I'm stronging than this, aren't I? How ashamed would the tribe people be if they knew how I was acting? I can't show weakness. Especially in front of the enemy..

Paul snarled, a look of disdain etched across his perfectly tanned face. "You're going to listen to me this time. I know what's best for you."

I closed my eyes briefly, haunted by the memory of my father making me stay home, wondering if maybe Paul was right. Maybe he's just doing what's best for me... But, what if he isn't? I sighed and opened my eyes again.

"What if you don't?"

Before I could figure out what he was doing, he dropped my to the ground. This time he didn't bend down to comfort me. Seconds ticked by as I leisurely sat up, instead of instantly scrambling to my feet, I glanced up at him, a frown adorning my lips.

He gazed down at me, glaring. There was a lot of panic behind it, though. He flashed a look around, his eyes brimming with dark hatred, confirming that I couldn't put up a good enough argument. However, I had to prove to him I'm not the little girl he can boss around.

"Don't be stupid." He grunted, leaning down.

"But what if you're wrong?" I whispered quietly, lowering my gaze.

If he heard the hurt in my voice, he didn't show it. He suddenly wiped a hand down his mouth, attempting to erase the frown beginning to form.

"Don't worry about it," He murmured, lifting me up.

Maybe he was right. Footsteps broke me from my thoughts as Sam strode forward, a determined look replacing his usual tense expression. He looked at Paul first, then shifted his gaze to me.

"Take her home," He grunted. "Explain everything to Emily. I'll be their shortly to meet with the elders. I've got to finish up here and then we'll be on our way."

Paul nodded, cradling me to his chest. I couldn't help but start to feel uncomfortable as he tightened his grip on me. His arm was wound so tight around me it was practically impossible to breath. It was almost as if he was purposely forcing my head against his chest, blocking my gaze.

We passed by The Cullens, who nodded at us. I glanced up briefly, not allowing Paul to stop me, my orbs catching his topaz eyes. He tipped his head, a genuine smile curling around his lips. My gaze never once strayed from his until he was out of my sight of vision.
