Two Kids Stupid and Fearless

Stormy Saturday

I groaned and turned over in my bed, pulling my blanket over my head, for the millionth time that night. I hated storms, and this was like a living nightmare. Thunder was shaking the building, lightning lit up my room, and the sideways rain created quite the racket against my window.

I rolled over to look at the clock. Two eleven a.m. Awesome. I huffed in frustration and shifted on my bed again so I was staring at the ceiling. Sleep was long gone, I would probably we awake all night. That means I would be cranky all day tomorrow. I’m sure Jack would love that.

Speaking of Jack, I was seriously thinking of sneaking in his room right now. Even if I would be on the floor in front of his bed, the security of another human being would probably be enough for me to sleep.

I flipped over on my side, disregarding the idea. He’d think I was soooooo creepy. I shut my eyes and attempted to clear my mind, but then a huge bolt of lightning lit up my whole room with blinding white light, and not even a second later, deafening thunder made my whole room rumble. Fuck it, I thought. I’m going to Jack’s room. I sat up on my bed and climbed off, taking my glasses and kitty blanket with me.

I padded quietly out of my room and walked the two steps to Jack’s door, opening it carefully. “Jack?” I called quietly.

I saw a lump in the middle of his bed, rising and falling with peaceful breaths despite the stormy hell outside. Good, he was sleeping. I didn’t want to be a bother. I walked over to the end of his bed and started to lower myself onto the floor, but I froze when I heard him reply.

“Mia?” A raspy voice asked. “What the fuck?” He propped himself up on his elbows and rubbed his tired eyes.

“Um, hi,” I said. “I can’t sleep...so I’m going to sleep on your floor if that’s alright.”

He chuckled quietly and shook his head. “Are you scared of a little thunder?” He taunted. Right then, another thunderstruck sounded and lightning lit up the room for a split second. I squeaked and ran to his bed, hugging him tightly. “You’ve gotta be kidding me. You’re, like, twenty-three.”

“And you still worship Kevin McCallister,” I retorted. That shut him right up.

“Alright, fine, you can sleep in here. Just don’t wake Agnes.” He gestured to the brown kitten, who was curled up in the crook of his neck.

I shook my head at him. I swear, that cat was slowly replacing me. I lifted his comforter over me and flipped over so I wasn’t facing him. He lied back down as well.

Well, this is awkward. Why hadn’t I thought of this when I came in here?

I heard a small laugh from the other side of the bed, and then a skinny arm grabbed me by the waist and pulled me to the center of the bed, where my back met a chest, presumably Jack’s. He nuzzled his face into my neck and I felt him smile.

Finally, I could rest easy knowing I had someone there to protect me from the storm.
