All Too Simple, All Too Quiet

1. All Too Simple, All Too Quiet
Cameron Levin

Jackie Reid wasn't even a beauty. But her mind made up for what her appearance had spoiled. Even with her hollowed, sorrel eyes, those terrifying pair, even with her thin, rose-shaped lips which spoke of ungodliness, even with her plump cheeks endowed with a warm touch of pink, she was still a human that sought to make others miserable. Her thoughts always seemed too thin and knotted and frail to sort out, poems to be deciphered.

Jackie claimed that underneath all the enthusiasm was some type of darkness that was too unfamiliar to roam. Behind all the smiles were tears awaiting their descent. Beneath all bustling lives was death hoping to catch up, and sure enough, it would.

Of course, Jackie loved seeing people break, seeing their collapse, hearing the fibre of their walls crumble. Pretty soon, she was just as good as dead. Her words were the only live part of her being, also as quietly waning as her counted breaths. Cameron had loved her all the same. Therefore, Jackie saved her best masterpiece yet for Cameron. All for Cameron.
