Bells Ringing in the Summer Haze

Sixteen years ago...

“I want to get married in a big white church,” Ten-year-old Valerie said as she and her cousin Nora watched the sunset from the family boat.

“Eww, why would you want to get married? Boys are icky.”

“Oh Nora, don’t be so dumb. They’re amazing,” Valerie said with a smile and dreamy eyes. “They’re handsome and strong, and fun!”

“I don’t think so,” Nora said as she licked the red Popsicle. “But if I had to get married, I’d choose to get married on the beach.” Nora looked around her surroundings, the sky was pink and yellow, the sea was calm, and from far away she could see people running along the beach enjoying the last week of summer.

“That’s a good idea,” Valerie said with a smile. “And of course we’ll be in each other’s weddings.”

“Pinky promise.”
