Whimper

Hachi

Seconds later, the boy discovers her body.

"Pasefoni!" he shrieks. He throws himself at the ground and grabs onto her. "Pasefoni! Pasefoni!"

She does not respond. Her eyes are unseeing and her lips are blue. The boy's face drains of color. "Pasefoni!" The boy shakes her violently. Her head lolls to the side. His hands turn red with her blood when he grasps her arm."Pasefoni!"

But he stops. He slides his hands underneath her, lifts her gently, and squeezes her body against his chest. At first, he is silent. After that, a single sob escapes from him. But after that, he screams.

It's a wild, uncontrollable scream that seems to come from deep within him and tears out of his throat and into the air around him. He throws his head back and that agonizing scream rips through the forest. Everything around him silences and that is the only thing that is heard. The cicadas stop trilling. The birds' songs are cut short. The stream even seems to stop bubbling. The only thing heard is that heartbreaking, bloodcurdling scream that wrenches through the woods. And after that, there is nothing but the boy's miserable sobs.

But he places the girl onto the earth, opens her mouth, closes her nose, and presses his lips against hers.

He breathes into her. Tears stream down his cheeks and onto her face and he holds her tightly against him. When he pushes all his breath into her, he inhales again and blows his air in her lungs. He screws his eyes shut and tears run in fat droplets. His hand clenches on her waist. The pulse in his neck beats visibly and quick.

Nothing happens. The boy tries again, but still nothing. He pushes on her chest and breathes more air into her, but for seconds there is nothing. The boy cries. He sobs and doesn't let up. But the girl does not stir.

Then her hand twitches.

The boy holds her head in his hand with his mouth on hers and she blinks. Her hand jerks and flies up to his shoulder. The boy opens his eyes, pulls away sharply, and gasps. The girl's chest heaves. He reels back. The girl flips herself over and hacks and coughs violently. Then she vomits.

"Pasefoni!" The boy snatches her ventilator. The girl continues to cough and vomit onto the earth. It's black and purple, and lumpy globules of a substance are coughed out of her lungs. The boy grasps her around the middle and pulls her up away from her regurgitation. She quivers in his arms half on her hands and knees with the viscous substance dribbling out of her mouth. She pants heavily.

"Douzo. Douzo." The boy places the mask over her face. She sucks in a breath, but pulls the ventilator off to cough more. Then she puts it back on. Her non-injured arm is trembling and she sags against the boy. The boy cradles her in his arms and sobs.

"Haruto... you... you..." she gasps. "You found me..."

"Pasefoni..." he weeps. "Pasefoni-san..."

"Oh my goodness..." The girl breathes hard. Her body shakes and the boy begins to stroke her hair. Tears roll down his cheeks. "You... Your breath... Your breath saved me... It fought off the poison..."

"Pasefoni-san wa ima wa daijobu da," the boy says softly. "Ima wa daijobu da..."

The girl lays in his arms and breathes. The boy holds her gently and winds his fingers in her hair.

Then the girl whispers, "Haruto, arigatou gozaimasu."

And the boy says quietly in return, "You are very welcome, Persephone."

For some reason I didn't want to leave the chapter at that, so I updated twice in a day.

I realized I should probably point this out, but when Haruto says, "Pasefoni-san wa ima wa daijobu da," (Miss Persephone, you're going to be okay now) he's using casual speech. Not that this isn't a serious situation, earlier in the chapters he speaks politely to her like he would a superior. Now he's speaking to her like she's a friend. You guys would miss this little cute thing if I didn't translate it here. xD
