Mission Transformation

First Mission and A Little Rain

Today wasn't as sunny as yesterday. The sun wasn't peeking through the curtains either. I wake up thinking about how today the weather totally reflects on how I'm actually feeling. I thought it was a stupid dream but it's not. I look around and take advantage of the fact that my mom isn't here to be waking me up early from my slumber.

I reached for my phone and dialed her number. I can hear the droplets against my window while I'm waiting for an answer.

"Hello?" she finally answered after 5 calls.

"Mom is it true you set up Jared to coach me on how to be feminine?" I asked.

"Yes hunny. I think being feminine is important and if I can't get you to do it, maybe an attractive guy can." she said.

"No! It's not! I'm not going through with this mom!" I whined.

"Yes you are Serene Wills. I'm busy so I can't talk much, if by the time I get back, you're not already getting coached you know how I will get." she threatened.

I clicked on her and threw the pillow across the room and buried my face in the pink silk bed sheets. I screamed into the mattress till I was out of breath. Why couldn't I be myself? I don't want to be "transformed". I'm fine just the way I am. This is not some "Princess Diaries" crap nor some "Pygmalion" movie either. They were making it such a big deal.

***************************

It was noon and it was a sure thing that Dereck would stay home all day watching a marathon of his favorite show while Face-timing his side girls. I walked passed him and into the kitchen but he noticed my glare.

"You mad?" he smirked.

"You mad?" I said mimmicking his voice.

"Your training starts today just letting you know." he said while stuffing his face with popcorn.

"For? I said it's not happening. I spoke to mom already and said no." I said while leaning away from the fridge to look at him.

"Told you it's not a joke. The training will happen just as mom wants. You can't just say no. You know how she gets when no one follows her rules!" he snapped with his mouth still full.

I gulped my glass of milk and slammed it on the sink.

"Jared's coming in 30 minutes, so you better not look like that." he said while looking towards the television.

"What's wrong with my outfit?" I replied.

"Seriously? A sweater that looks like a dress on you, and sweatpants?" he said with an eyebrow raised.

"So? It's not like he's my boyfriend." I replied.

Dereck shook his head and didn't respond. I looked at myself in the mirror behind my door and wondered what exactly was wrong with wearing this at home. It's not like Jared is special and where would we be going with this weather?

******************************
Exactly half an hour later, I hear the doorbell. I dragged my feet to open the door knowing who it was already.

"Hey Wills, you ready?" he said with a smirk while walking in.

"Why did you even agree to this?" I asked.

"It was a bet and your mom is paying me." he said with a shrug.

Seriously...my mother was PAYING him to coach me. She has got to be kidding me.

"How are you even going to coach me? Your'e a guy!" I pointed out.

"I have experience. It's all about the game Wills." he winked.

The game? Hah! I never really talked to Jared much but he was a ladies man. Girls are always dying to get a piece of him. He was majoring in science, a respectful gentleman, fit and good looking. I caught myself thinking about those qualities and shifted my attention to other things.

"I think our first mission should be going through your closet and picking out an appropriate outfit for the mall" he said staring at what I was wearing.

I followed his eyes and then looked back at him like there wasn't a problem with me. He stared at me in disbelief. He started laughing hysterically and I looked at him confused.

"What's so funny?" I grunted.

"You think there's nothing wrong with your outfit? I mean look at yourself." he said.

I rolled my eyes and said "Alright, Alright." I signaled him to follow me and we went up to my room. We went to my closet and I just stood there with a plain face. He looked around and picked out a pair of white skinny jeans with a blue blouse that contained floral accents and a pair of nude flats. All this, my mom had bought for me a while back when she was traveling.

"Oh no! Hell no! I'm not wearing that." I said.

"You have to. Now strip!" he said.

"S-strip? What the hell are you saying? I was getting loud.

He put his finger on my lips and stepped closer.

"Serene.." he said.

"Mhm" I said not being able to speak.

"I'm the coach, you follow what I say. You're going to wear this, and if you don't I'll...do something you didn't want me to do." he threatened.

I looked at him wide-eyed. Was he serious? I couldn't help but start cracking up.

"You think I'm kidding?" he chuckled.

He pulled me close to his face and stared into my brown eyes. I could see his eyes searching my face when he suddenly turns me around and grabs my hairbrush.

"Ow!! What the hell?" I yelled trying to stop him.

Jared was trying to brush my messy hair which I hadn't brushed in 2 days.

"What the?" he said furrowing his eyebrows looking at his tangled fingers in my brown locks.

I broke out in laughter and turned to him.

"When was the last time you brushed your hair?" he asked.

"Don't know, been too busy." I shrugged with a smile.

"Well if you'd get dressed into this outfit then I wouldn't have to be pulling your hair with the hairbrush." he said.

I laughed even harder and he stepped close to me once again but this time with a serious expression. Our faces were inches away and I felt my cheeks getting hot. I was embarrassed. Was he staring into my imperfections or making me feel uncomfortable on purpose so I can get it together?

"So..is it going to be my way or..." he said looking into my eyes.

I nodded to his first suggestion.

"Well aren't you scary when you're serious." I said softly.

"It's my thing." he replied shrugging.

"Yeah whatever." I rolled my eyes.

"Yeah now get in those clothes and hurry I don't got all day, I'll be downstairs." he said walking out of the room.

I looked at the clothes and whined to myself. "Why, why, why?"

*************************

I was going down the steps like a high school girl who's prom date is waiting for her at the end of the stairs except Jared was conversing with Dereck about football and girls. I rolled my eyes at the thought of having to walk at the mall in such uncomfortable clothes.

Jared noticed and stood up from the couch. He took a glance at me from head to toe while Dereck started clapping.

"Wow! We should really take a picture so it can last longer!" Dereck said mockingly.

"Well that's a start. Are you ready?" Jared said.

I nodded at Jared and rolled my eyes when I looked at Dereck. He started chuckling.

"You wanna tag along?" Jared asked Dereck.

"Nah! You guys go ahead and enjoy your date of nightmare!" he laughed.

"Oh would you please shut up already? You're annoying! It's hard to believe you're 23!" I exclaimed while slamming the front door.

*************************

Jared and I got to the mall. Thankfully the rain had subsided because we had to park far. He always lets me go first to every door he has opened for me. I couldn't help but think that he's the only guy who has ever done that for me. Everyone else just let's the door close on my face.

"Let's go look for shoes first!" he said while looking around.

"Huh? Yeah sure let's go" I said disconnecting from my thoughts.

"Whoa there don't be getting distracted. We need to focus!" he smiled.

"Yeah I am, I am." I assured him.

We walked into 4 different stores and I just couldn't agree on any of the styles. I couldn't help but go into the goth stores and look at the t-shirts and comic books.

"We're never gonna get you into agreeing to wear nice shoes if you keep walking into these useless stores." he said exhaustingly.

"Oh cmon! We still have time." I said while picking up a snow globe.

"Let's go you don't need none of this. You need clothes and shoes!" he grabbed my hand and led the way.

After a minute of walking, I noticed he was still holding my hand. I softly let go and looked towards him but he seemed unfazed. I thought he'd be embarrassed just to be seen with me. I slowly started falling a few steps behind and found myself staring at his tall back.

"I never once really looked at Jared. He always just seemed like some player boy who hung out with my brother everyday." I thought to myself.

I shook my head and caught up to his pace.

"Don't be falling behind little flower." he said while still looking forward.

Little flower? Is this because of my blouse? I mumbled.

*********************************

It was 8pm and I can already feel the blisters on the back of my foot from the flats. I came to a full stop before he noticed and walked back towards me.

"You okay?" he said with concern.

"Yeah, it's my shoes. They're hurting me. I had never worn them before." I said in pain.

"Here just take a seat. I'll be back" he said grabbing me by my elbows and taking me to a nearby bench.

I was slightly bleeding from the back of my foot and felt the burn. I looked around and didn't see Jared anywhere. I was hoping he'd be back soon. After what felt like 15 minutes, he finally was in sight.

"Where did you run off to?" I asked.

He took out pink sandals that had a perfect rubber bow in front.

"Here, wear these. They're comfortable and girly at the same time." he smirked.

"Oh...um..thanks I.." I couldn't find the right words.

"Your welcome your highness." he joked. "Now let's go. Time to go home." he smiled and picked up the flats.

"Oh give me, I can take those." I reached for my shoes.

He shook his head in form of saying no and moved the shoes farther from me. I looked at him and he winked at me.

"Goodness you can't be doing things like that to me." I thought to myself.

The whole car ride was quiet but very peaceful. I can still feel the burn from the blisters and looked out at the city lights.

We finally arrived at my house right in front of my garage. We both stepped out of the car and walked towards my door.

"You're not walking in?" I asked.

"No it's fine. I have things to get done before bed. Tell your brother to be ready at 9am tomorrow" he said while putting his hands in his pockets.

"Oh okay...sure thing" I said.

I stayed staring at him in silence for a good full 3 seconds before he spoke up.

"Did you want to say something?" he chuckled.

"Oh! I...just..I just wanted to thank you for today and I will enjoy these sandals." I said while waving my fist in the air.

He looked at my fist and then back at me and laughed softly.

"Okay goodnight then Wills. See you tomorrow." he stepped off my porch and walked back to his car.

"I will enjoy these sandals?" I muttered in disbelief. "And what was up with my hand?"

It was starting to drizzle outside and I looked at the sky. It was bright red and lighting struck.

"Looks like a storm is coming..." I whispered to myself.

Little do I know, it's an actual metaphor for what's happening in my heart right now.
