Woebegone

Eleven

He arrives back home, he cleans his fists of blood while I wash his clothes, bruised knuckles and blood the only evidence of a fight. Jake ends up in hospital with fractured ribs and a messed up face. Jake can’t fight, he only hit’s the girls that are too afraid to stop him. Like me.

I cry all day. He listens, it's just music filling the silence. We could dance to it. Night arrives, darker than ever, the tears never stop. At some stage, he comes in. The door creaks open, he watches me. He leaves.

Later, his feet are in front of me again. He picks me up and carries me like a child. He turns on the bath and empties me into the water. He asks if I want him to drown me, I nod. He nods. He slips into the bath and hugs me. The tears make the water over flow.

He kisses my head, we lie for an infinity. He wraps me in a towel, cocoons me in his body. We sleep.
