You're My Infinity

Baby, What Happens at the End of the Night?

I had to admit that I felt the slightest bit guilty for handing my Emilee this golden liquid. Above the drink that I had found, there was a sign that had warned of something with the number twenty. I wondered if that referred to the number of cycles from the birth year, but no one stopped me when I grabbed for a drink. Either way, the liquid smelled sweet and I didn’t worry too much when she seemed to like it.

I laughed when she loosed up a lot. I could see her whole body just suddenly deflate in relaxation and I studied the golden liquid that was in my cup carefully. What was this sweet mystery drink? I probably should’ve asked such questions before I had started to drink it – or given it to my Emilee – but I could only shrug a little.

I couldn’t lie with saying I didn’t like this transformation that seemed to happen to Emilee when she took a few big gulps of the drink. I saw it first in her shoulders. Previously she had been holding her shoulders up high in a tense position, as if she were trying to keep me out; slowly, her shoulders fell and, along with that, the rest of her posture and positioning. Next to go were her eyes. She had been watching me with some sort of contempt and shield that hid all of what she was feeling, but all of that suddenly dissipated and I could see the true, smiling soul of the five-year-old I had met in the woods on that day that I had sealed my fate.

That fate, of course, was to fall in love with a human… So far, that human that held my heart was simply beating the life out of my heart, testing me and making me bleed out in pain that she wasn’t loving me back. I knew that that time would come when she did though, and I smirked at the thought. She was going to be mine, and it was going to have to happen tonight – whether my Emilee was ready or not.

It was then that I decided to pull her again onto the dance floor. The first time had seemed quite successful for us; she seemed to lose herself in the dancing… The very dancing that I had taught to her when we were only children and everything was still carefree to us. She seemed even looser now, so I couldn’t wait to get her on the dance floor. I wanted to see what she looked like: dressed like a Pharisee and dancing just the same. She was just the perfect Pharisee to me so far, and I was pretty sure that if all things went well, my mother would happily take such a beautiful girl as a daughter-in-law. Sure, we had to get past the “human” part of the equation, but it would happen…

I put our drinks to the side, knowing that we would have to come back to them again. The little tube that held the liquid potion I needed felt heavy and metallic in my pocket. I couldn’t wait to use it… Aminah said that I would know when the time was right to use it, and I finally understood it now. Sure, it didn’t exactly happen in the way that I expected it would, but it would work with Emilee equally as good. I wanted her to agree to this, but I needed this tonight before midnight struck and I would again be ten inches tall.

I grabbed her wrists and pulled her back into the circle. We had less room than before. Apparently more people had been drinking that golden liquid from a hidden table and people were walking around as loose as Emilee was. I wasn’t sure where that buzz had come from; I was feeling just fine but everyone else seemed to be majorly off today, stumbling around like their feet didn’t know how to work.

I had to accept the fact that I liked what it had done to my Emilee – no matter how dishonorable that sounded. There was something about it that made her dance even more freely. Sure, the first time she had remembered the Pharisee dances that I had spent a whole afternoon teaching her, but she still hadn’t let me touch her. Now she allowed my hands to stay in hers.

I watched some of the couples that were dancing around us frequently and stopped Emilee from executing another Pharisee dance when the next song came on. My hands grasped at her waist and I pulled her into me. Her eyes looked at me in quite a questioning way, but I just smiled and glanced around her. I held onto her wrists once again and pulled her arms up so that her hands were clasped behind my neck. I let my hands trail back down the length of her arms gently and with the lightest of a touch and then dropped them back to her waist.

I had to admit that I liked how much of a slope her arms needed in order to be around my neck. Before, I was always the short one – much shorter than this comparison now – and I had to crane my neck to look up at her. Now, that situation was reversed and I couldn’t help but let my mind trail off to thoughts of what this would be like if she were my size too. I craved those thoughts but tried to keep them out of my head for fear of becoming too cocky.

I moved my feet from side to side, swaying with my Emilee in my arms. I tried to keep from looking directly in her eyes for two reasons: firstly because I was afraid that I might just get sucked in and get lost there and secondly that I was trying to avoid her seeking the awkwardness that was seeping into my eyes. I was used to bigger motions than this – ones that didn’t involve touching and as awkward movements as these small confined steps that we were doing.

I didn’t mind being this close to her though; that was the only part that wasn’t awkward about the whole thing was that I got to hold onto her like I did. My skin was on fire from where we touched as if she had some Fire Pharisee dust on her arms. My heart was beating out of my chest and I was oddly nervous. When she rested her head down on my chest, I couldn’t help but let out the smallest of a sigh; it just felt right to have her this close to me.

We remained on our feet for the longest of time as other couples seemed to be coming and going on the dance floor. I wasn’t so accustomed to using my feet as I was to occasionally having wings to use instead, so there was the slightest of the ache in my feet as the moon was rising higher and higher in the sky. I dared not say that my feet were tired or ask her to stop because I threatened my own sanity then; I wasn’t so ready to let go of her from my arms like this. Instead I only rested my head on top of hers and forgot about the pain in my feet for the tingling of my skin when it touched hers.

We danced together like that through every song that they could play. An upbeat one came on that just had me itching to do the one dance that I had taught Emilee, but I was still enjoying the way that she seemed to be leaning on me and I resisted the urge. We had a lot more room on the dance floor now which made me feel better because I could take my Emilee in nice big circles around the dance floor. I wondered what Emilee was thinking as this moment as I danced with her to the end of the night but she either seemed content or sincerely out of attention at the moment.
I shook her a little when the music stopped. The moon had risen to its peak height for this time of year and my heart was beating that I had let it go on this long. It was fast approaching midnight and, at that time, I would be a Pharisee again.

“You want something more to drink?” I asked her as I led her off the dance floor. There weren’t many people here anymore – since I had made the mistake of not paying attention to the time – and I was able to walk beside her instead of follow her since she knew where we were going more
than I did.

When she nodded, I left her at a table and went to go find the table stand that had the golden liquid. There were only two cups left and I rejoiced that my luck had worked out so well in my favor. I paused at the stand though and took out the potion that Aminah had given me. Inside the one drink that was intended for her, I dropped the shimmering, pinkish liquid; the color only stayed for a moment before it dissipated into the golden color.

I brought the liquid back to her but didn’t give it to her right there. If this worked like it was supposed to, we shouldn’t have been in public for all to see. The woods were bordering the party site, so I pulled her into the clearing there. Luckily, it wasn’t too bad of a walk to my home, so I would make it there before I was a Pharisee again and could take her home more easily that way. I felt kind of cruel for doing it this way, but even Aminah had seemed to know it would have to happen this way as she had made remarks about it while she was dressing me – but they had seemed harmless at the time.

She had taken a sip of the drink just before we had entered the woods and already when I turned to her, I could see the difference. Aminah had warned that the potion had tiring effects and might put her to sleep for a while… I figured it would be better that way anyway so I could situate her at home and she’d be left as a Pharisee when she woke up again.

Slowly, it was as if she just shrank. I watched her almost disappear as she was no longer just a head shorter than me but her body hid down into the long grass of the forest. She looked as if she was just going to be about an inch shorter and I couldn’t wait to stand with her as a Pharisee. I couldn’t wait to teach her how to use her wings and show her how magical the nature really was. Sure, she had seemed to be distant from me right now, but once she woke up I was sure she would realize that this was our fate.

I slowly scooped her up from the ground and cradled her in my arms. She was sleeping away and breathing heavily, and I smiled; I brought her mini forehead to my lips and kissed the top of her head. Then I began walking with her in my arms.

Luckily our tree wasn’t too far away since I was starting to feel the aching in my bones and I knew what that meant. Aminah met me at the door and I laid my Emilee there for Aminah to tend to before I changed. It was only a few seconds after I had pulled away from Emilee that my bones hurt and I was restored to my original size.

“How was human life?” Aminah asked teasingly as I stretched slightly. “I guess it worked out okay for you!”

I only shrugged as I rolled my neck and it cracked. “Well she’s here!” I answered. “She doesn’t know it yet… But she’s here!”

I picked her up and carried her inside then. Aminah had organized a bed for Emilee beside mine and I situated her there. I wrapped her up in a blanket and left a kiss on her cheek. Now all that was left was to wait until she woke up and make our fate…
