'Till Kingdom Come

chapter 2.

“I am sitting in a trolley because it makes no sense” – Louis Tomlinson

Lily breathed a sigh of relief as she looked at her watch. Five minutes later they would’ve been late and Lily would never hear the end of it from Addie.

The new routes of the subway had taken them a lot longer than the normal 30 minutes to reach Addie’s school. The ride there was packed too and Lily and Addie were forced to stood in between two loud hung over men that reeked of alcohol and lack of soap with Addie who couldn’t stop her annoying nervous rant (“I’m gonna be late, I’m gonna be late, I am going to be late” ) that got on Lily’s nerves too eventually.

The fancy private school was packed with a wave of students in their freshly made new uniforms. Most were accompanied with their moms, some had come in groups and almost all were dropped off by fancy cars with drivers. Although she was only there to drop her sister off Lily felt a little underdressed as she looked at her old jumper and jeans she had blindly threw on that morning.

A light tug on her hand made Lily’s mind snapped back into reality. Addie was looking around nervously while her hand was still holding her sister’s loosely, the gripped was tighten when a group of girls walked passed them, one of them nudged the other to look at their direction and said,
“Nice jumper Adela.”

The comment was innocent and it was accompanied with a smile, but Lily scoffed because she knew better. Those girls had to be the ones Addie spoke about earlier and Lily’s protective side was roaring with hatred. To her surprised however Addie gave a small snort and an eye roll.

“They’ve always been jealous of my impeccably good taste of fashion.”

Lily actually laughed and got down to her knees to get a good look of her little sister.

“It’s a good thing to know that wittiness of yours is good at something else other than giving me headaches in the morning.”

Despite the small smile and another eye roll she gave, Addie was still nervous and Lily could tell. She brushed Addie’s messy curls and pinched her chin affectionately.

“You’re gonna do just fine kiddo, I can tell already. And guess who’s picking you up after school today.”

Addie’s brows furrowed in confusion. “Not you? Who then?”

“Nope. El and Liz are!”

Addie beamed in response.

“El and Liz are here? Aren’t they backpacking around Europe?”

“Yep. They got home early because they said they missed you so much.”

Whatever it was Addie wanted to say was cut off by someone calling her name in a distance.

“Addie hey!”

It was a boy with hair that had a mind of its own. His skin was brown like his eyes, his smile was bright and he looked like he had the energy to lift up the entire town.

“And you’re must be Addie’s sister! Heeelllllooooooo!”

From the hair and the energetic attitude Lily assumed it had to be Sebastian Addie had told her about several times. The long burp of ‘helo’ he just let out confirmed this assumption.

Addie did not looked pleased at all by his sudden presence and was instead giving him a very dirty look. Lily laughed out loud though, something about his energy was pleasant and strongly familiar.

“And you’re must be Sebastian, the one who likes burping out his sentences.”

Sebastian beamed upon hearing her reply.

“Hey! You do talk about me after all!” he said to Addie.

Addie’s face looked like she had been caught in the act but quickly composed herself.

“Oh please. Don’t be so proud of yourself, you should hear the way I talk about you first.”

“But that’s not the point! The point is you talk about me!”

Sebastian was so cheery and full of energy Lily was surprised it hadn’t rub off on Addie even the slightest. In the middle of Addie’s and Sebastian’s pointless argument a small girl with a blazing red hair approached them with a big smile on her face. It took Addie and Sebastian a moment to registered they had company and when they did Addie squealed (to which Lily was amazed Addie could do) and gave the small girl a hug (again, to which Lily was amazed Addie could actually do).

The small girl with the red hair was apparently Mary Ann and she did look like the kind of girl who was nice to everyone. The three of them were chatting away endlessly about how their summer went and Lily took that as her que to go.

“Addie sweetie, I’m going now yeah? Don’t forget, El and Liz are the ones who’re gonna pick you up today.”

Addie was half distracted when she answered but Lily was happy to see that her sister had some descent friends and could actually behave like a normal ten year old girl.

Lily watched as Addie and her friends walked away into the school building, vaguely still hearing their conversation (“Stop doing that Sebastian, it’s disgusting and inappropriate.” – “If I’m so disgusting and inappropriate why’d you talk about me so much then Adela?” – “Stop it you guys.” ) and couldn’t help but smile because they reminded her so much of the days when she wasn’t who she was now, with pouring innocence and the world bright in front of her instead of heavy on her shoulders.

She took one last look at their dissapearing figures and she swore, instead of Addie’s dirty blond hair and Sebastian’s bright smile, she saw her own wavy brunette hair and green eyes with dimples.

The way back from Addie’s school was quieter and calmer for Lily. It was still pretty early and she didn’t need to be at work for another hour. It was one of Lily’s rare time of actually having a few moments to herself, where she could enjoy the noisy New York traffic and let her mind wonder far away without having Addie or her work to be worried about.

It was only a week into September but the weather was already a bit chilly that even in the jumper she was wearing Lily could still feel the cold breeze on her skin. The subway she was on was less packed and she was searching for an empty seat when her eyes landed on an eye-catching broadway poster. The poster was advertising one of Brodway’s ballet shows and the face of one of the ballerinas was what had caught Lily’s attention.

Rebbeca Wilson. Lily read among the many names on the poster. She knew her. She was the girl she countlessly encountered on the subway when she was on her way back home from her dance lessons. They were both dancers and it was only two weeks ago when Rebecca had told her to try an audition for an open slot in one of broadway ballet shows. Lily had thought about the idea numerous times and had actually wanted to try the audition. But Addie and her work had kept her so busy that she decided she didn’t really had the time.

Obviously Rebecca had nailed the audition and Lily couldn’t help but feel a little remorse and a tad bit jealous. It had always been Lily’s dream to perform and dance in broadway. Rebecca wasn’t a lot older than her and a part of her thought that could have been her face plastered there on the eye-catching poster, smiling brightly and living her dream.

Lily sighed. Rebecca’s smiling face was stuck in her mind the whole ride to the city and when she got out of the subway she was thinking about buying a pack of churros before going to her work.

At least, she thought, one of her dreams she could easily reached at the nearest cafe.
