Unexpected Miracle
the school
Monday came along more quickly than I thought. My alarm clock rang I opened my eyes and gazed at the time. I sat up and walked to the bathroom and took a shower. I could hear someone moving in the living room. I knew she was up I hurried up with my shower and I walked to my dresser I put on a pair of blue worn jeans, an Alice in Chains tee shirt, a beanie and worn converse. I walked out to the living room and she looked at me and smiled she started signing
“good morning”
I smiled and replied
“hey sweetie ready for school?”
she nodded I walked past her and shook toby’s shoulder he turned over I told him
“time to get up”
he sat up and walked to his suitcase
“and hurry we are out in ten”
he nodded and walked to the bathroom. I grabbed a bowl of cereal and ate. Toby walked out of the bathroom and got his book bag and she grabbed hers and we were off. I got in the driver’s seat and they both got in I said to toby
“we are going to drop you first and ill be here to pick you up at the end of the day.”
“ok uncle Baze”
he replied we drove to the elementary school and dropped him off. Cadence didn’t look at me but it didn’t matter to me we drove to the school for the deaf. She unbuckled and she signed
“you have to come in and meet with the principal and she will walk you through things and things like that”
I signed back
“ok where is her office?”
she signed
“it is to the left as soon as you walk in”
“ok I’ll be here to pick you up at 2:30 ok?”
she nodded in understanding and she got out of the car and waved. I waved back and she went inside. I got out of the car and went inside the school was quiet there was hardly any noise. I walked into the office and even some the staff was deaf. It was nice to see a change. I went up to the receptionist and said to her
“hello, im here to see the principal.”
She replied “what for sir?”
“im Blaze Miller im cadence millers dad”
she looked startled
“ok I’ll go get her”
it took a few minutes for the women to notify the principal. The women came out of the office and said
“go right in.”
I nodded her way I walked in the office and she stood up, she had blonde straight hair and brown eyes she looked not very nice. But I did notice the hearing aid in her right ear she smiled at me and signed to me
“so you are the man who has custody of cadence”
I smiled and I signed back
“yes I am, and I mind as well say you have an impressive school.”
She looked very surprised that I could sign but she didn’t know me so she has no right to judge me.
“wow I had no idea you could even sign, and I know you didn’t learn it in just a few days so how did you learn?”
she signed back to me
“I had a sister and she was born deaf just like cadence, my parents were ashamed of her being deaf the always wondered what they did wrong to deserve this but I didn’t feel that way. I felt lucky to have a sister that was alive and healthy so we both learned it together and we could talk it took us years I started when I was 6 and finally knew how to speak it when I was 20. But my sister passed away when I was 21 and I never used it after that but then cadence came along and everything changed just like that.”
She looked surprised
“wow I didn’t expect that of you, but what is your real angle here, all of a sudden you come along and want to be in her life just like that, look at you, you are a terrible influence on her just look how you are dressed. Why are you doing this?”
I got angry
“look you have no right to tell me how to raise my daughter she is doing fine!”
I signed to her
“look she is deaf you are hearing that just doesn’t mix”
she signed back to me.
“bye mam don’t ever tell me how to raise my daughter again”
I stood up and left.
“good morning”

I stood up and left.
