Lucifer's Angel

Emissary Darkness

I yawned and stretched out my arms as I got off the bus. I took a minute before going inside to enjoy the peace and quiet. When you’re one of two high school students that ride a buss filled with little kids for an hour, the quiet when you got off was heavenly. To my surprise, Katharine and Miles, my foster parents, were not home yet. This stuck me as odd; considering they were always home before I was. I shrugged it off though and walked into the house. They’d probably gone to the store or something.

As I walked inside, I was greeted by my best friend and loyal companion Jericho. The German shepherd puppy ran up to me, and then sat at my feet, waiting for me to pet him. I laughed and picked him up. He was starting to get too big for this.

‘’Hey boy,’’ I greeted, scratching him behind the ear as I walked up stairs to my room. I put Jericho down and threw my book bag on the floor by my dresser. I walked back down stairs to start dinner since I had no homework and my companion was right at my side, as he usually was.

Before getting to work though, I turned on the stereo and put it on the second song on the disk. The drum intro to the Gazette’s song Filth in the Beauty sounded throughout the house, making me smile. I had Katharine to thank for getting me into this band. As I walked back into the kitchen, I heard the front door open. Katharine and Miles walked in, Chinese take-out in hand. I just laughed and turned off the stove, glad I had put anything on yet.

‘’We had a craving for Chinese food,’’ Miles laughed, handing me mine.

‘’I can see that, Miles,’’ I replied with a laugh.

‘’We got you your favorite,’’ Katharine chimed from the living room. Miles and I walked out and sat with her.

‘’Thank you,’’ I replied.

‘’So how was school,’’ Miles asked.

‘’Oh, the usual, except for when I went to Mr. Myung’s room during lunch, there were two officers from the military; Colonel Michaels and Lieutenant Barrett. Mr. Myung was acting weird too, and then Mr. Ridgemen was being a creeper, but that how he usually is,’’ I explained. Katharine looked over at Miles for a moment, and then looked back at me.

‘’I’m guessing that those officers were probably just there for a visit,’’ Miles answered.

‘’That’s what I thought, but they were in uniform.’’

‘’They still could’ve just stopped by on the way back to the base,’’ he challenged.

‘’Yeah, I guess you’re right,’’ I replied. I still wasn’t buying that idea. I couldn’t help but feel like they were there for a reason other than to visit.

‘’Oh, Miles tell her about that thing with work tomorrow,’’ Katharine cut in suddenly. I looked at Miles curiously.

‘’Oh yeah, I almost forgot about that. I have to go in early tomorrow morning, so I have a friend that’ll come by and pick you up to take you to school at six,’’ Miles explained.

‘’What, you’re gonna have some stranger take me to school, are you nuts, Miles,’’ I retorted.

‘’No, I am not nuts, Allison. He is a good friend of mine. You’ve met him once, actually, but you were just a kid.’’

‘’That was years ago.’’

‘’And your point is,’’ Miles asked.

‘’My point is that I don’t know him,’’ I snapped.

‘’Well, you’ll meet him tomorrow, then you won’t be strangers anymore.’’ I couldn’t help but smile at his reply.

‘’Miles, you’re crazy,’’ I laughed.

‘’Tell me something I didn’t know, Allison,’’ he replied with a smile.

‘’Anyways, who’s up for a movie night and ice cream,’’ Katharine asked somewhat randomly. I smiled at her.

‘’I sure am.’’

I opened my eyes to find myself in a house that was not my own, yet it was strangely familiar. I was in a study of somewhat. The carpet was a dark maroon color and the walls were painted a tan color. There was a fireplace in the middle of the left wall from where I stood in the door way. There were was a desk on each side of the room. Despite what one would expect, the desks were completely clean on top. The only thing on the top of either of them was a small lamp. Curious, I walked over to one desk and opened a drawer, wondering if anything was in them. It was empty and so was the other desk.

Sighing, I crossed my arms over my chest. There was something significant about this room, but I just couldn’t figure out why. Losing interest in this room, I turned to explore the rest of the house. I left what I assumed to be the study and walked out into the kitchen. From there, I turned left and went down a hall. On my left was a doorway. I turned the handle and pushed it open.

This room was obviously a little girl’s room. The walls were white and the carpet a dull pink color. There was a small bed in one corner, a dresser along the opposite wall and a toy box against the other. In the back left corner by the bed was a door, slightly opened, unlike all other doors I’d seen. I walked over to the door and pushed it further open. It was only a closet with clothes hanging in it.

Turning back to the room, I shut the closet door behind me. I took a step to walk across the room to leave so I could look at the rest of the strange house but suddenly, something wrapped tightly around my ankle, cutting into the scream. When I tried to get loose, I fell, hitting the floor hard with my hands beneath me, causing one wrist to ache. The harder I tried to free myself the more the thing cut into my ankle. The room had suddenly become dark as well, as if it were night, so I couldn’t see what it was.

Feeling something else wrap around my other ankle, I let out a shrill scream as it started pulling me, dragging me back towards the closet. It didn’t matter how much I tried, I couldn’t get away. I tried to grab onto the edge of the wall as I was pulled into the closet, but my hands slipped and I was pulled further in, toward-

I shot up from my bed, fully awake now. My heart was racing as I tried to steady my breathing and make sense of my mind.

Just what the hell was that?
