"Cath, wait up.”

I turn to see Sam jogging up behind me before I leave the house one afternoon, Reed working on a project for work upstairs. He’s wearing a dark crew neck and these jeans that look stupidly good on him, a coy smile playing up on his thin lips. I lean against the doorway with my arms across my chest, attempting to appear as nonchalant as possible – the red string is practically pulling me to him.

“Do you want to hang out later?” Sam asks me I have a pair of my highest heels on, the ones with the thick black platform, and he still towers above me. I shrug apathetically but inside I swoon, little patches of stars forming in the corners of my eyes.

“I guess I could make room for you,” I hum sweetly, tucking a loose strand of long hair behind my ear. His grin spreads and causes my heart to falter, and I have to remind myself on repeat that there is a man upstairs whom I call my boyfriend.

I leave with Sam’s number on my phone and a smug smile on my face.
