The 22nd Century

Chapter two.

Taking walks with a 10 year old girl in the park wasn't Kellin's favourite thing to do. He was walking straight forward, his facial expression looked dead, and he didn't even bother to stop when Sarah did, which was more often than not.
"Flowers!" Sarah exclaimed and ran over to the flowers, across the lawn. Kellin sighed as he figured that she would stay there for a while, so he sat down under a tree and stared at his hands as if they were the most interesting things in the world. He mentally cursed his mom for forcing him to take his little sister out. Taking a walk was the last thing he wanted to do today, and he was kind of nervous because apparently, in half an hour, he would meet his ‘soul mate’. He definitely didn’t want some fucking cliché bringing them together.

An extremely girly, high-pitched scream was what made Kellin snap out of his daze. He looked around for his sister, and couldn't control his laughter when he saw what had made her scream. She was crying, staring at a flower covered in ice. Kellin jogged over, laughing uncontrollably as he did. "What did you do to it?" He snickered as he reached her. Just then did he notice the boy standing bent over his little sister, trying to make her stop crying. It was the same guy from earlier that day. He was pulling faces and making weird noises to her, making her laugh through her tears. Butterflies erupted in Kellin's stomach as he stood there dumbfounded, smiling at the scenario in front of him. "Watch this." The boy smiled at Sarah before he turned his head to the flower she probably killed. He stared at it with a concentrated look, and suddenly, it caught on fire. "Shit." He muttered, a panicked look spread across his face as he looked around for something to stop the little fire he had caused. Kellin chuckled, reached his hand out and moved it back and forth. Water appeared over his hand, and he turned it so that it extinguished the little fire. "Ah, man, sorry." The Hispanic boy smiled apologetically at Kellin, making him blush. "It's whatever." Kellin smiled, the sarcasm was dripping from his smile like venom. The boy reached his hand out for Kellin to shake. "I'm Vic.." He trailed off as Kellin turned around to someone who had poked his shoulder repeatedly, interrupting his and Vic’s little 'hello-my-name-is' moment. "Can I help y-" He was cut off by his own little shriek as his wrist suddenly started vibrating. He looked down at his watch, gasping when he saw it was showing nothing but 0's. He flickered his eyes between his watch, Vic, and the random stranger who had poked him repeatedly. "Who..." Kellin trailed off, not knowing what to say at all. The stranger smiled softly, and tugged his sleeve up revealing his watch who also showed 0's all the way. Kellin gasped softly, looking at Vic, to the stranger and back at Vic again. There was an uncomfortable silence filling the air. It was as if they all dared each other to say something, but no one was brave enough. Kellin stared up at the stranger, taking in his features. His hair was short, and orange coloured. Obviously a ginger. The colour of his eyes were hard to make out, seeing as he wore sunglasses. He didn't look much taller than Kellin. He was skinny yet muscular, and he was pretty good looking. But Kellin didn't want him to be his soul mate, he didn't want anyone to. Although he didn't know either of the two, he felt this weird attraction towards Vic that he couldn't deny. His ‘soul mate’ could fuck right off.

Kellin's so called 'soul mate' cleared his throat as he scratched his neck. "Uh, I was going to tell you that, uhm, you lost your wallet while, uh, running here or whatever and I just wanted to give it back. I'm Matty." He was speaking so fast, and doing so many weird things while he spoke, like tugging at his sleeves and wiping his hands at his jeans, that Kellin found it hard to keep up with what he was saying. Matty held his hand out for Kellin to shake, but Kellin couldn't move. He was dumbfounded. He turned to Vic, who was just standing there awkwardly, looking down at his feet. Wait, why hadn't he left yet? "Uh..." Kellin started, but couldn't get any words out. He opened his mouth, closed it, and repeated that at least ten times before suddenly bursting out in laughter. "Whatever." Kellin laughed, holding his hand out since Matty seemed to have given up on the whole 'hand shaking' thing seeing as Kellin just stood there, staring. Matty took his hand and shook it, "Your...name? Do you speak English?" He spoke slowly, and stared at Kellin as if he was some kind of tourist. "Do you?" Kellin smirked, knowing he had thrown Matty off with his comment. "I'm Kellin." He finally said, eyeing Matty up and down with one eyebrow raised. Everything was so fucking awkward, and it was fucking hilarious. Matty handed Kellin his wallet, to which Kellin just smiled and took it, muttering a quiet 'thanks'. He turned to Vic again, who still stood there, looking awkward and shy. Kellin cleared his throat, "Why are you still here?" He sneered, but with a smile. Vic’s eyes widened as he took a few steps back, stuttering over his words and obviously not knowing what to say. Kellin smirked, and pulled out a little pen from his wallet. Grabbing Vic's arm, he scribbled down his number and the words '’Call me, ok?’'. Vic looked down at his arm with a shocked look on his face. It quickly faded though, and he smiled softly at Kellin and nodded, turned around and walked away. "Uh, so," Kellin started, not too sure of what to say. Then suddenly, a thought crossed his mind, where the fuck did Sarah go? "Shit!" He exclaimed and looked around, sighing in relief as he saw his little sister a couple of meters away, talking to some girl looking her age. "What?" Matty questioned, reminding Kellin that he was still there. Kellin just shook his head, giving Matty a little smile. Matty smiled back nervously and motioned his head towards the tree Kellin had been sitting under earlier. "Wanna like, sit?" Kellin nodded, and the two made their way over, sitting down in the grass.

Kellin immediately took a liking to Matty, though in a friendly way. He was nervous under Kellin’s gaze, and really easy to intimidate. Although Kellin tried his hardest to be nice, it was hard as the boy next to him was an unbelievably easy target. They talked for a bit, Kellin mostly making Matty nervous and fidgety without even trying. Matty attempted flirting a lot, although Kellin laughed him in his face every time. He couldn’t help it, it was just so fucking funny how nervous this boy was.
"I have to take her home." Kellin spoke after an hour or so of awkward small talk, pointing towards his little sister as he stood up. Matty pouted, standing up too. "Uhm so, call me or something, I guess?" Kellin mumbled, already turning to walk over to his sister. "Uh, yeah." Kellin barely heard Matty's words seeing as he already had started to walk away. "Wait up!" Matty called behind him, and Kellin turned around to face him, giving him a questioning look. Though he guessed it looked more like a 'what-the-fuck-do-you-want-now' look. He couldn't help it though, he wanted to go home and drown in self-pity. "Uhm, wanna like, if we're like, soul mates, should we date, or?" Matty stuttered, playing with his sleeves nervously. Kellin raised his eyebrows as Matty's words sunk in. Of-fucking-course they should date. It was law. "It's obligatory." He shrugged, and went to walk away again. "But-" Matty was cut off by Kellin sighing with impatience as he turned around again and looked at him expectantly. "Want to like, go out then? Tomorrow, or something." Matty questioned with hopeful eyes. He liked Kellin, and Kellin knew that. Kellin was supposed to like Matty back, but he didn't. "Sure." He shrugged again, "Text me the details." He continued, looking down at the phone in Matty's hands. "Okay. Cool." Matty grinned. "Bye, Kellin." He walked closer to Kellin and kissed his cheek, then turned on his heal and walked away. Kellin immediately wiped his cheek with his hand, feeling kind of bad about this whole situation. Matty couldn't be his soul mate, it had to be something about this that wasn't right. "Fuck my entire fucking existence." He muttered as he turned to walk to his sister again.

Kellin sighed in relief as he opened the front door to his home. "Fina-fucking-ly." He whispered to himself while closing the door and kicking his shoes off. "Kellin! Honey! Did you meet your soul mate yet?" His mom came running down the hallway, grinning excitedly. "Soul mates are bullshit. I'm hungry." Kellin mumbled as he walked past his mom and made his way to the kitchen. "Dear, what happened?" Kellin stuck his head in the fridge, looking for something to eat as he muttered a muffled 'doesn't matter' to his worrying mom.

"Yes." He said excitedly while pulling out a chocolate bar, moaning lightly as he tugged the plastic off and took a bite. His phone vibrated in his pocket, startling Kellin ever so slightly. He pulled it out, and answered the call he was receiving."Hello unknown number! What can I do for you?" Kellin said in an obvious irritated and sarcastic tone. "Uhm, sorry, it's Vic." Came a voice from the other end of the line. Kellin couldn't help the grin that spread across his face as he heard Vic's voice. "Oh, hey!" Kellin chuckled, butterflies erupting in his stomach just at the fact that he was talking to Vic on the phone. "Hey." Vic said barely above a whisper, and then an extremely awkward silence settled between the two. The only thing that could be heard was Kellin's chewing, although he did try and eat silently, the chocolate was crunchy. "We should hang out." Vic blurted out suddenly, startling Kellin a little who had gotten kind of used to the silence. "Why?" Kellin answered, his mouth full of chocolate. Vic paused, and Kellin knew he had made the boy insecure. "Because I think we should." Vic stated after a few seconds, rather confidently for once. It caught Kellin off guard, maybe this boy wasn’t as submissive as he initially thought? And then, just like that, they started talking as if they had known each other their whole life. Making sarcastic comments towards each other, joking around and insulting each other. They talked on the phone for hours, about nothing and everything. And Kellin's attraction towards Vic got stronger and stronger with each passing minute.

"I met my soul mate today too." Vic said out of nowhere, cutting Kellin off in the middle of his ranting about Matty. "How is he...she...?" He replied, suddenly feeling a little down, he had only known Vic for not even 24 hours, but still he knew that there was something there. "He's alright, I guess." Vic trailed off, letting the silence settle between them once again. Kellin mouthed an 'o', which was stupid because Vic couldn't see him. "I have to go now. My brother has been calling for me the last 20 minutes." Vic said again, sounding kind of sad. "Oh." Kellin mumbled. He looked at the clock on his night stand, and grinned foolishly to himself. "Hey, we have been talking for over three hours." He laughed, and he heard Vic chuckle softly too. "Time flies when you're having fun." He sighed. Kellin's smile dropped a little as he sighed too. "Yeah." The silence settled once again, and it was making Kellin a little frustrated. "So, uh, see you tomorrow?" Vic questioned in a happier tone again, it made the butterflies in Kellin's stomach go wild all over again. "Yeah." Kellin grinned, although Vic obviously still couldn't see him. "But, uh, so, I have to pee and well-" Vic was cut off by Kellin's laughter, and he laughed too. "Have fun!" Kellin giggled. "Well, yeah. I thought you'd like to know." Vic said, sounding as serious as he could while trying not to laugh.
Another hour later, they both had managed to say their goodbye's and hang up on each other. Kellin already missed Vic's voice. He sighed as he slid down to the floor, his back resting against the wall as he clutched his phone to his chest. He liked Vic, in a more-as-a-friend-way. And he liked Matty too, but in a just-friends-way. And it made him want to throw himself off a cliff. Another thing that made Kellin want to throw himself off a cliff, was the fact that he had agreed to go out with Matty tomorrow. And just as that thought crossed his mind, he got a text. From Matty. "Yay, fuck me." Kellin sighed. "I'll pick you up at eleven. Destination: secret ;) x"

Kellin couldn't help but groan as loud as he could as he lied down on the floor, his head resting against the wall instead of his back. "Destination; secret." Kellin mocked and stuck his tongue out at his phone as he typed out a reply to Matty. "Can’t wait."

He felt bad for leading Matty on like this. They could've been friends. But it was fucking law, so he kind of had to like him back, or at least pretend to. "Fucking....laws." Kellin muttered to himself as he threw his phone across the room, not caring if it broke. Lying completely down on the floor, using his arms as support for his head, Kellin found himself drifting off to a dreamless sleep.
